15-Feb-2011 - Skill Bonanza: Urns, Ashes and Shortcuts

Today's update is a skiller's paradise, with updates for crafters, prayer-lovers and agility fanatics. Make urns that benefit a number of other skills, scatter demon ashes, and build permanent agility shortcuts.
Urn Crafting
No matter what your Crafting level, you are now able to make urns for Cooking, Fishing, Mining, Smithing, Woodcutting and Prayer (but more on the Prayer urns later) at any pottery oven. Form it, fire it and attach an appropriate rune to it and you’ll be able to carry the urn when training the related skill. There’s no effort required, as your urn will fill up passively as you train, until it becomes full and you can teleport it away for a tidy batch of XP.
Urns can be made from Crafting level 1 all the way up level 81; the higher your Crafting level, the higher quality your urns will be. Higher quality urns are able to collect by-products from a wider range of fish, logs, ores, etc. For example, a cracked fishing urn (made at level 1 Crafting) will fill up if you're fishing catches below Fishing level 10; however, a decorated fishing urn (made at level 76 Crafting) will fill up when you are catching any type of fish.
Urns are made just like any other pottery, but require two pieces of soft clay. Once it has been fired, you can either trade it or add a rune to 'activate' it. You can then start to fill up activated urns – with the ability to check how full they are – and then teleport them away once full. Wondering where all your urns go? In south-east Varrock there is an interesting newcomer: Ernie, the urn collector. Ernie will offer help on making or using these urns.
Pottery Improvements
To ease the pottery process, you can now make soft clay directly at a water source (you no longer need a container for the water). Additionally, new clay mining sites have been discovered south of Barbarian Village and near Draynor Village, and there is also a new pottery building in south-east Varrock, on the bottom floor of Ernie's house.
Demon Ashes and Prayer Urns
Demon slayers will find that, from now on, their demonic prey has a new 100% drop. These will be impious ashes (from imps and fiends), accursed ashes (lesser and greater demons) or infernal ashes (black and abyssal demons, nechryaels, boss demons), depending on the demon defeated. Any ashes you currently own will remain as just that: ashes, like you get from burning logs.
Much like bones can be buried for some immediate Prayer XP, these ashes can be scattered (including at a POH altar). Alternatively, you may want to keep hold of ashes to use at the Ectofuntus, where they effectively work as pre-ground bones, which will save you a bit of grinding… To tie in with the pottery crafting update, you’re also able to make prayer urns – urns that automatically collect the ash of any demons you defeat, and which can be teleported away for bonus Prayer XP in the same way as the other urns.
Shortcut Improvements
Finally, we've made some changes to a handful of shortcuts and transportation methods to streamline their use. First off, we've made the River Lum canoe system available to free-players. At points along the Lum, you can build canoes to take you on a one-way trip into the Wilderness. You can even now borrow a hatchet off one of the canoe tutors.
Members can also use their Construction skill to build hidey-holes at crossbow shortcuts and rope racks at eagle eyries/Baxtorian Falls. In these will be stored crossbows/grapples and ropes, so you won’t need to carry these items in order to make use of these shortcuts and transport methods.
In other news…
The legendary wolf, Hati, has retired to a colder land, so players will no longer be able to hunt him. The gloves fashioned out of his paws still have his lingering magic effects on them, but this will disperse in one month's time, so make sure to use their power up if you haven't already!
An exotic delicacy awaits you near a banana plantation…
Finally getting some prayer experience while killing demons… :p

Any idea which urns are f2p? and their crafting requirements?

Is this F2P?

The lower level urns are f2p, the higher ones are p2p.
Edit: I just looked at the skill guide in rs, members urns start at lvl 48 crafting and go up to 81

Yes! :D We can make urns up to "normal" urns - the highest requirement is 44 Crafting to make a Wc Urn.

I just tried out the smelting urn. I made 45 mithril bars and got an extra 250 exp.
This seems more like a gimmick to get newer players to start crafting… >.<

That's exactly what I was thinking.
I suppose it would stack up over time or something of the sort. This just seems like the other useless experience update. Those stones that you get from P2P noncombat skill training.

Doing some testing with coal mining, steel bar smelting, and maple cutting using normal urns (highest f2p tier), the urns give back about 20% of the experience you earn in filling them; you can fill one up about every trip and a half. If you fill one every other trip (since no one will go back mid-load to get another), you can probably get a 15-16% bonus in xp. If scripts could start using these it could be a pretty significant increase in xp/hr.

Well, soft clay prices are going to go down a bit. Because of the update you don't need a bucket to water clay anymore. But it will make is a LOT faster to make.

Sounds interesting…useless at lower levels but potentially very useful at high crafting levels. Using several urns an hour could potentially increase exp/hour rates by around 10%

I tried teleporting 3 urns at once.. 750 exp…
Best. Experience. Ever.
I suppose it's goodish for when you're training a skill and you want an extra little boost or something.

Wont this only be good for powerskilling though as it take up a inv spot? Slowing down banking stuff?

Well with smithing some ores you don't use up all the inventory spots. ie. Mithril 5 mithril ores + 20 coal = 25 inventory spots, the other 3 can hold the urns. This really doesn't apply with any other skill that you can get exp with an urn.
As with cooking and the others, it might slow down your exp per hour. BUT when you teleport the urn away and get the exp it probably evens out.

This is why I don't like Runescape anymore. It's far too easy, and they're just giving xp out like it's candy, instead of having to work for it.

That is why I started to bot? Because it took
Waaaayyyy to long to get exp…
How do they work? Like how would the prayer ones work?

The urn collects the new ashes that demonic creatures drop(imps, lessers…) when the urn is full you let the ashes go(like people spread a loved ones ashes) and you get prayer exp.
At least that's what I got from reading the update and playing around with other urns. I haven't actually tested it out.

If Runescape were a game which actually took skill, this would be a valid complaint. As it stands, they're only cutting down on the number of repetitive clicks to gain levels.
Now if Bungie made melee a OHK from anywhere in Halo, or if Blizzard cut the mineral and gas requirements for Hydralisks in half in Starcraft, that would be worth complaining about in terms of making a game easy.
Long story short I have no problem with this update, and I'll probably use it for steel smithing and coal mining. With a coal bag, you can fill up a mining urn in one load of coal; and with steel bars (and mithril for that matter), you have the extra unused slot anyways.

Well it would be, if there was one for firemaking -_-
AFAIK there're only mining, smithing (specifically smelting), woodcutting, cooking, fishing, and prayer ones. And the prayer ones only collect ashes from imps and demons.

Because they will go up due to the "sudden" inspiration to craft so they can get what they think will be big benefits?
Just to probably be let down.

Really wish I had time I'd make an all-in-one crafter with multiple location support! Mine , soften, form, fire, bank, repeat.
E: While I really should be studying I ran a test:
With fragile mining urns, you get 200XP for every approximately 1000XP mined (tested with multiple ore types). So 20% bonus with fragiles?

I think they're all exactly 20% as long as you have at least two urns with you (the second empty one will catch any overflow when the first fills up). The advantage of the higher tier urns is that you can use higher leveled skilling stuff with them.

Lobsters work well with cooking urns
3 loads (2 of 27 - with 1 urn, and one of 26 - with 2 urns) works out perfectly to fill both urns.
On a side note, I don't actually BOT anymore, I actually have started to actually play again…

Their attempt at making people craft more is failing. Urn prices continue to drop day after day.

I think that's just because they set the starting prices too high. 1.6k is a lot for 2 pieces of clay :duh:

Honestly, I wouldn't even take the urns with me while skilling no matter what price they were. The extra xp given by them doesn't add up to much at all. So I agree, 1.6k is pretty high for such a worthless item.

lets analyse the lobster scenario above…
Method 1 cooking 28 lobsters a run (84 for 3)
Loss - 868
Experience - 10,080
Method 2 cooking 80 lobsters every 3
We are going to assume you buy the urn and the fire rune…
Loss - 1,820
Experience - 11,520
Method 3 Cooking 80 lobsters every 3 loads
Making the urn
Loss - 868
Experience - 11,520
basically if you can get the clay yourself, and make the urn, its far and away the better option.

I don't see why ppl aren't happy, they're getting xp for basically doing the same thing that they did before the urns, its pretty good in the long run
