A couple of the guys on the IRC - including me - had a sheevaplug. The power supply issue was a plague among sheevaplugs. Mine didnt get hit, but some did. They moved onto Guru plugs and say that their guru's are working well. Mine died during the summer months, probably because of heat and because I put it behind books on a shelf.

Its a great concept but it can be a pita to service them.

Actually, the PSU was quite fine - as long as you don't make it power an USB hard disk. (So get a hard disk that draws it's power from an external power source; or get an external powered USB hub)

First sheeva had this PSU problem - but it works fine after I replaced the PSU (Which was like 7 dollar); the second sheeveplug has been fine ever since.

Only downside to them is that they don't have a FPU; so floating point is slow. Performance? Uh… Good for a general purpose server; as long as you don't do media encoding/decoding.

I would personally stay away from the Guruplug as that one did have serious issues with power and overheating. Something related to the two 1Gb/s ports. Don't know, maybe it's resolved. Guruplug is really the same as Sheevaplug.

Yea, now there is this thing called the 'dream plug' or something.
Tbh, marvell's plugs are all very similar.. Its not that hard to mod a sheeva to add a SATA port.

I have it connected to an USB hub, with four hard disks attached to it. The only thing that didn't work was using them as RAID 1. It kept giving me USB errors if I did that; even when I forced mdadm to perform at max 3MB/s or so. Shame really. I bought the DLink 323 NAS for my raid setup instead. :D

Dont get me wrong. I loved my sheevaplug while I had it, aside from the slow usb speed and putting /home /var and /usr on it. I suggest it if you've got time and would like a cheap, effective server. The sheeva plug is about 100USD from marvell, and there is a place called Newitt you could buy sheevas, gurus, etc, from the UK. I've heard their customer service is substantially better than marvell's.

If you decide to go down this track, good luck!

wiki'd it and sheeva/guru plug looks pretty cool.

Except I'd rather buy a $100 mini ITX Zacate board instead. Completely different products though so you can't really compare em. (plus it doesn't appear these things are available outside of Europe? not sure)

eh, well I completely missed the main site for selling them. Feel really dumb having overlooked that.

I still think these are cool, but anytime I look at anything with an ARM processor and see the prices I just feel like I'm getting ripped. But then again, I am cheap.
