In game, go to the settings tab, and turn the filter off. Swear as much as you like!

Is Jagex undergoing some untold changes in their management? I have yet to figure out why they are giving the people all of these updates that they have been requesting for many years.

Because they have finally realized that if you want to keep a client base you have to keep them happy. And they have seen that their obsessive witch hunt against botters and rwt made their large client base very unhappy inturn making it into a much smalle client base.

It's just a phase of Jagex. They will stop this and go back to the Jagex we all know and love sooner than we know.

Is this like the World of Warcraft filter where you can still be banned if you curse, even though you (read: others can have it on but still take offense) have the filter off? It doesn't mean others can't take offense to it.

What the **** jagex?

No filter but you can still ban us for this *****?

You can be banned for cursing in World of Warcraft? I would imagine excessively, but wow. I never realized that. But I have never cursed in World of Warcraft unless on Ventrilo and even at that, it is rare.

This.

Basically, they're doing it for the money. Like the "Banned Account Reinstatement," and resetting botters stats, rather than banning them.

But honestly, did the filter really bother that many people? Or bother people enough to make them quit? Personally, I don't really care, I'm mature enough to deal with it. I just can't wait to see the hXc 420 purple kush kids swearing everywhere, just because they can.

I think it is. I read on the forums that the usual rules still apply in-game, so this new option is pointless, and if you use it, you'll get bent over by Jagex.

filter-off = allowing things such as typing "www.villavu.com" or just cursing?

URLs are still filtered. Everything else is not.

They won't be filtering all urls, apparently.

So, just to summarize: It's still not a good idea to curse.

I think they'll be more lenient. They gave people the choice, and I think they're tired of dealing with bs reports, since it costs them a good chunk of money to mute/ban people just for language, when a lot of people who play are of a mature age to say and hear profanity.

Finally…

If you find swearing offensive, please do leave the profanity filter on.

I think you'll only be able get a mute for discussion of recreational drugs, solicitation, racism or other prejudice, threatening or blackmail.

In WoW you can only get banned for flame not cursing.. you can say I fuckin hate that boss all you want

in rs it's probably much easier to get in trouble and I'm sure jagex won't think twice

it would probably be easy for jagex to say "ignore language reports from this person because they have filter off"

unlike WoW where it's client side

No you can't? Two times I swore like every line in Trade Chat with no ban. If they user doesn't like to see swearing, then they can easily turn it off, otherwise it's their problem..

if you turn the filter off, people don't see the swear words YOU say, you can see swear words people say.
If you leave the filter on, it filters all the swear words to ****.

I think some people might be confused on how it works.?

Who said it didn't work that way? Turning off a filter turns it off for you, not turning off yours for everyone else :p

Yes, you are one of those people.

If you turn it off, you are able to see other swear words as well as your own.
If you turn it on, other people's swear words and maybe even your own are censored.
It is client side pretty much.

I was making an assumption after reading the many confusing posts in this thread.

With freedom comes responsibility, is probably what they had in mind.
You are still responsible for your offenses.

Sex

I think they shouldn't care. The people get to choose if they want to see it or not. If somebody cusses only people who don't mind or do it themselves will be able to see.

But then they lose some word of mouth from adults/kids/mothers/etc. And word-of-mouth is the only thing they really have going for them, in the advertisement field.

I don't think anyone is really confused :P most games with a filter work like that.. when you turn off the filter everything you see isn't filtered

World of warcraft… doesn't ban if it isn't racist toward someone or flame toward someone

you can spam 'fuck' in trade chat 200 times and you won't get suspended.. I've said countless badwords since WoW was in beta - today and same with my friends

Yawp, thats how it works, blizzard doesnt give a flying F*ck as long as its not racist, against a religion, or criticizing someones sexuality.

Jagex in the rules states…
This is actually from the wiki, which quote the site…but I remember seeing this on runescape.com
You shouldn't report any chat that has been starred out (like this: ****), as the censor has prevented anything that may have been offensive from being seen.

Richard

I've noticed a lot of comparisons between Jagex and Blizzard here. You have to remember, their products are aimed at different audiences. Jagex is most definitely a younger audience, but not only that, it is a free game. You can't really expect someone to be banned, when the average user age is well in the 20s, but in a game where there are numerous children under the age of 16, then you have to censor things to some extent, people that age are a hell of a lot more sensitive (I know, I once was/still am classed as a "young-un" on WoW).

With free games, they don't have as much funding to be filing through large numbers of cases of people swearing and such. Blizzard probably have a huge number of staff working just on offences like this. Jagex's previous solution to this: have a profanity filter.

Personally, the only reason I wanted the filter gone was due to the way it filtered things that were in no way offensive whatsoever, sometimes even just single letters in sentences. Trying to type "=]" and it coming up with "=*". Why?!

Well, while it may be a different style of update than we regularly see, it shouldn't make much of a difference to a botting community ;)
