Display Updater Change Logs

Not sure if it's possible, but it would be awesome if we could have Simba display the change log in the debug box when MSI, SRL, or Reflection is updated. Would be nice for the users to see exactly what was changed.

My apologies if there's already something like this.

We could just get the logs from Git I guess? :D

Yeah. Or SVN (since MSI is currently SVN).

That could change pretty easily.

I'd like that a lot, I always see it update and have to snoop around the forums to see what changed

YES! I asked for this in IRC a few days ago.
I'd like to see EXACTLY what has changed in SRL though SIMBA!

And I answered: We're not going to make a Subversion or Git frontend. Soon you'll want to commit using Simba. It's going to take way to much time to add stuff like ``what has changed''; etc. Unless I'm going to do it all on my server, which will be pretty pointless anyway, IMO. Just look at the git log? (Same for srl-opendev; it's mirrored at http://git.villavu.com)

Can Simba scripts/extensions call external programs? If so, why not just run git/svn/cvs or whatever else you want? As Wizzup? said, it would be ridiculous to re-implement the logic in these programs inside of Simba.

Well, the extensions don't use svn/git. They download snapshots that I generate on my server. This way we don't force users to install subversion or git. (SCAR did this, it really annoyed me back then)

So, unless I just generate logs on my server this isn't really possible / worth it.

If you really want it you can do it script side with GetPage + http://git.villavu.com/?p=srl-opendev/.git;a=summary + PosEx + INI file with last date you checked

Though putting in the debug box might not be optimal if it's going to get overwritten or pushed up by other debug. So might as well just make the page one of your home tabs in firefox, or a pin tab in chrome.

That could easily be made into a extension, no?

Hmm, what about just showing something like this when something is updated?

SRL Update Successful - View changes here -> http://git.villavu.com/?p=srl-opendev/.git;a=summary
That seems easier to me. :p

Yes to both, but only scripters will care. And even scripters wouldn't need to know every change to SRL. Just leave it up to scripters to bookmark the page and check it whenever they want. (Or get a github account, add the RSS feed, and watch the repo(s))

This could be updated with the commit ID too, which I would think could be easily posted onto the server.

Not necessarily. I'm sure users would be interested to know if a bug they've reported/encountered was fixed. Would save them from finding the thread/post on the forums. Sometimes there isn't even a post/thread.

Eh good point.

Just thought of this. Could an option be added to each of the updater's menu items called Change Log, and when pressed, just opens the link to the git change log?

Yeah, that would be awesome :)

I could work on that right now, except I don't think MSI uses Git.

I actually just meant can extensions call external programs with the sole purpose of displaying the 'change logs' the thread starter wanted, not to actually grab the updates with. :)

This is the best idea, and Coh3n is right. users like myself would love to see if a particular change/or update fixed a bug that myself or other users have pointed out.

Its just a pain in the but for me to manually check for MSI updates as it still uses SVN and i have to enter the resporitory its in.

I would love this feature and i hope this gets implemented into simba.

Wizzup?, couldn't you just do something like:

MenuItem[mi_changeLog].OnClick := OpenPage('https://github.com/SRL/MSI/commits/master');
Or whatever the actual naming would be.
