Programming Language Cups

Wizzup?

Perhaps we should have a few cups for people who really excel in some languages / are good in a language? I've already liked this over at the moparisthebest forum.

Psss, not Delphi/Pascal cups.

Agree! I would like to have the Italian cup :) I am good at Italian!

Well the obvious for Java would be Duke…

Python could be:

Can I have the Lolcode cup? What about 1337-speak? (1337-speak is just as valid a language as Italian) ;)

On a more serious note I think that it would get quite messy, as there are too many programming languages and too many talented people here. And I think cups here function as more of an award like a Star on a soldier's vest or something, not neccessarily just handed out for knowledge or expertise.

Python, C(++)/D, Haskell, Java?
That would be it, no .NET.

And no PHP/Ruby/Perl?

That list seems off… I think we should stick to Java, C(++), Python for now as those seem to be the predominant "other languages" for the SRL forums.

Dutch cup pl0x :)

Python/C(++)/Java should do in terms of other languages.

If Markus gets a dutch cup I want a Universe-cup, or at least a PlanetEarthCitizen-cup. :)

Markus

2011-02-03 08:19:56

You forget that Dutchies consist a pretty large part of the SRL staff, but not too large;)
Planet Earth Citizen applies to everyone so it'll be a worthless cup.

Yeah, it will just make you guys more big-headed about it if you all get a cup because of it lol. Would a guy from Tanzania get a Tanzania-cup?
As South Park put it, the Dutch are like the Canada of Europe, because its cold there and no one really knows where it is. Maybe thats why you guys flaunt it all the time :p

LISP, anyone?

E: Okay, I immediately realized how great of an idea this was when I saw the thread title. I'm all for it; just have a cup for excelling programmers who code in all the major languages.

Why those languages?

Richard

2011-02-03 12:29:20

Definitely have a VB.NET cup, purely because I am forced to use this for A-level computing. 'Though I am getting somewhere in persuading our teachers to allow Java also.

All common languages (including web based) IMO.

Hobbit

If we do do this and have a cup for every language we should look at nodding the theme so that we can put mini icons for it next to the little square next to name showing online of off line… Seeing as some people cups stretch across the whole black space already… *cough*nava2*cough*

Multiple rows of cups do you mean? I think that could work well, if we shrunk all the cups down.

There's an option to stack cups although it's never really been used before. It was mentioned for competition cups.

It wouldn't be as pretty as individual cups, but you could 'add a cup on top' for every programming language, the cup being directed at programming languages in general.

I think Hobbit knows what I mean, I've never experimented with it before

Shrunk the bar width from what it really is on my screen to make it more post friendly :)

Edit: No I dont think the stacked cups will work as you think, sec i will investigate

Edit 2: nope not really

Pick either 4, 6, or 9 languages, and have mini versions of their icons on a single cup.

How can we control that on an individual basis though?

RM, do you mean this?

Stack Rank - This allows you to control how ranks are displayed in case a user has multiple ranks displayed. If you set this yes, this rank will be displayed on its own line. If you set this to no, this rank will follow the previous rank on the same line.

There would be multiple cups (created as needed) on the backend, so that there would be one on the frontend.

So even if we have only 4 languages represented we'd need 15 different cups for all the combinations…?

I like idea 3 the best.

Idea 4 makes it seem like the language cups are a chat program :p.

In theory, yes, people would have 1 of the 15 possible cups. But as they would be created as needed, there would only be a few at first.

Do you not remember how obscenely long the list is already? D:

Richard

How about a title? "[Language X] Master"?

Why those languages?

Because we don't want them for every existing language out there. That would lead to too many cups. C(++),Java,Python seems like fine cups. Pascal is not useful because Scripters/Master already implies Pascal. VB and others are programming languages that I think we should not support. It's like saying you want BASIC and COBOL there. Although I'd probably pick COBOL over VB.net any day…

E: Those "Idea 1-4" are perhaps funny but not particularly easy to make.

Just name them by number then have a post as a legend.

Making a long list longer on a page in the admincp is worth it to allow for a single cup on the user bar (which already has too much stuff IMO, some of it could just be in the profile page).

if the cup could use php to be created…

you could have one cup that runs a php script and the php script would add the right images onto another image and only show the final image.. :)

I know we don't want them for every language, but why do we want them for those? It makes no sense to me, as we don't really use those languages anyway. Java and Python make a little sense, but if Python takes its place as primary interpreter, Azrael will imply Python (in the long run). Besides, why no PHP? I think it would fit your list. Plus, we have a few good PHP scripters around.

And how would people earn such a cup? Post a good piece of code? How many times? We aren't really the community for that.

What do you mean by that? You want to start supporting other programming languages? But only the ones you like?

In my eyes, this will not result in people trying to learn extra languages. It's only nice for the ones fluent in a language to be recognized. But it's not of much use when you can see that someone is good in Haskell. Pretty much because we're an RS cheating forum (and you wont change that just by handing out new cups). The people come here (in the first place) because they want scripts, not because they have a programming problem.
