Are you over clocking? Your ram is that expensive because it's made to be overclocked

In all honesty if you're buying to overclock it's going to be expensive

also your CPU is a great one for overclocking it'll go very high but you'll need a good cooler

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181013&Tpk=h70

and load speed won't be improved too much because of how slow HDD's are, if you want to go a tier down you'll still be able to run multiple runescape bots while having WoW on max settings and 20 tabs open on firefox while watching a movie on netflix etc etc.. most people get computers that will run 500% more than they do lol

let me know if you wanna go down into the 600-800 price range I'll stick with intel

edit:

quad cores with hyper threading are really just quad cores that produce more heat

I run an i5-760

runs everything I could ever want it to.. WoW while I got a few virtual machines up with simba running.. etc etc
I wouldn't want you to waste a few hundred let me know and I'll link you some better priced stuff

One advice, buy a ssd disk and run it as primary. then you use the 1tb disk for large files you dont need all the time :)

Sex

2011-01-22 05:49:25

I'd like to keep the price under $800. All I really want is 6gb DDR3 RAM, a 3.0+ghz quad-core CPU, and yeah.

I was thinking of buying a SSD but I heard they deteriorate over time.

I wasn't planning on overclocking anything, perhaps the CPU but nothing else really.

Right now SSD is not the best unless performance is of the utmost importance. Because its fairly new the technology is not good compared to HDD, and its too pricy.

I couldn't agree more

SSD increase, at most, your bootup… for what we use it for

if anything it'll increase the loading speed for some of your games, games do run from RAM so that's where all your speed would come from besides loading where the info goes from drive to ram

@sex I added you but I don't see you online, I added you earlier lol
but if you're not overclocking we can easily get you 8 gigs of ram for half the price of your ram

It cost alot yes but its also ALOT faster than a 9,4k rpm disk, so much faster it cant even be compared, expecially with pcie connection ( but thats unesesary). however for rs2 botting, ssd disk will NOT give any advantage, else than opening scar/simba :P

If you want to skimp, get 4GB of ram if using AMD, 6 if Intel.
I dont like seagate, but some people do. Might want to get a 640GB hdd - cheaper.
Might want to up the GPU to a 5770 if going ati - iirc they're down to the 130's - 150s.
Get a better cpu, the sandybridge intel cpus seem to be amazing.
Mobo doesnt nearly have to be that expensive…

Capricorn

Holy hell.

What is your budget?

Sex

2011-01-22 15:01:38

Below $800.

Edit: I can't get an Intel CPU with that mobo.
If you'll choose another mobo for cheaper I'll use it. I just want a few 3.0 USB ports, DDR3 1600, and gigabit LAN.

I agree get the 5770 and get the Vapor-X one.

Shit runs VERY cool.

And fck the Antec 300. Get the Coolermaster 932 or 942.

I got the 932 for x-mas and let me tell ya. Its quite and keeps my temps at 31 degrees with a Coolermaster Hyper 212.

The case is VERY huge and alone weighs 30 pounds. But it supports all motherboards. Best airflow case on the market imo.

Modified it. Changed the Mobo, HDD, and GPU. Got the GPU you suggested, however I kept the same case. I doubt this thing will run that hot.

DVD Drive $16.99
Case: $69.99
HDD $79.99 - Got a slightly more expensive one for the increased transfer rate to utilize the mobo.
Mobo $99.99 - Got a $70 cheaper one, will suit my needs.
GPU $144.99 - Got this because of suggestion.
PSU $69.99
RAM $49.99 (x2=$99.98)
CPU $99.99

Subtotal: $676.91
Tax: $55.85
Shipping: $5.80
Grand total: $738.56

Eh, $30.51 price reduction, not bad :D?

Gaming = major

Heck you go downgrade to a i3 540 from the i5-2500k and it would slap that AMD build around like a little bitch.

No point in going with the x4 620 because the x2 265 will give similar performance in games (not multithreaded stuff) for 30$ less.

Heck, you could even go Phenom II 555 BE which beats the x4 620 in almost every application.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/188?vs=120

A 5770 is a little weaksauce though, that's why I didn't really want to for go the 6850. If OP really wanted to he could leave the heatsink behind and it would be in his budget. (he would be fine even overclocking a little with stock)

3) I question whatever you suggest because you think Hyper Threading is wasted CPU die and just creates more heat.

Hyper threading "is wasted cpu die" ? that makes no sense

A quad core CPU with hyperthreading is basically a quad core that produces more heat.. hyperthreading is great for 2core processors

No see, this is what doesn't make sense. Perhaps before you claim outlandish stuff you research what technologies do before you shit talk them.

Let us say you ARE running something that doesn't utilize the benefits of Hyper Threading, you can turn it off. But turning it off requires going into the BIOS and that's a lot of work for lazy people, especially if all you want to do is play a game. Anything that will use a lot threads WILL benefit from hyper threading. And if it doesn't you certainly don't lose performance.

You do realize HT isn't software based right? They actually have to add it onto the CPU.

MSI has

# Triple Over Voltage Function The MSI N460GTX Hawk is the world’s first graphics card supporting voltage adjustment of GPU, Memory and PLL, using MSI exclusive Afterburner (V2.0.0) overclocking software. This function enhances overclocking potential of the graphic card in all dimensions.

# newegg Twin Frozr II Thermal Design Built with two 8cm fans, four heat-pipes with SuperPipe technology and a large-area nickel-plated copper base, the MSI-exclusive Twin Frozr II thermal design can efficiently dissipate heat produced from the GPU, as well as the memory and power module. When compared with the reference cooler, this thermal design effectively reduces the GPU temperature by 18? and noise level by 8.1dB for a cool and quiet computing environment.

# newegg 7+1 Phase PWM Design When compared with 4+1 PWM design on the reference card which supplies power only up to 90A in graphic cards at the same level, the 7+1 PWM design of the N460GTX Hawk supplies power up to 120A for the GPU to enhance GPU stability and performance in overclocking session.
# newegg Military Class Components In addition to all solid CAPs which enhance the overclocking and high loading performance of GPU, the N460GTX Hawk is equipped with the SFC (Super Ferrite Choke) to enhance power efficiency by 10% and output current by 30%. Also, the Hi-c CAP with a tantalum core can enhance GPU power supply to increase the graphic card's overall lifespan as well as the stability of GPU.

# newegg APS (Active Phase Switching) Technology APS helps save power usage by controlling PWM automatically according to the GPU's workload.

# newegg V-Check Points Apart from triple overvoltage function, V-Check Points allows you to measure voltage on the graphic card with just a multi-meter in order to capture various data in an overclocking session, thus making overclocking simpler.

This one is also DDR5 256-bit. The brand is more trust worthy and better.

Minimum 550W or greater system power supply

Your getting a 600 watt supply. You should ALWAYS calculate how much power your computer is going to use, then add 100 watts to it to be on the safe side.

Because any slight power jump or if you do small overlocking is going to increase your wattage on the computer.

Best video card for ~$200: Two-Way Tie:

GIGABYTE Radeon HD 6850 1GB
GIGABYTE Radeon HD 6850 1GB

OR
MSI GTX 460
MSI GeForce GTX 460 1GB
Gigabyte Radeon HD 6850 1GB
V.S.
MSI Geforce GTX 460 1GB

After recommending only the Radeon HD 6850 last month, I’m changing my mind this month and I’m now recommending either cards.

Why?
First of all, the Radeon HD 6850 became more expensive ($200 vs $180), due to limited availability and great demand for it, making the 6850 less attractive.

Second of all, many overclocked GTX 460 1GB, which outperforms the stock Radeon HD 6850, started to appear on the market at a lower price than before, making the option of going with an overclocked Geforce GTX 460 1GB more attractive.

However, overclocked versions of the Radeon HD 6850 started appearing, closing the performance gap with the also overclocked GTX 460 1GB.

In the end, both cards offer excellent performance and with price variations, you can pick whichever is the least expensive when you’re on the market to buy a ~$200 card and be very happy with your purchase.
Regarding the cards that I recommend:

The two specific cards that I recommended (Gigabyte Radeon 6850, MSI GTX 460 1GB) offer the best bang for the buck for their respective series in my opinion, by offering the most performance and best cooling at a good price.

The GIGABYTE Radeon HD 6850 1GB is a factory overclocked Radeon HD 6850, with frequencies of 820MHz (Std. 775MHz) and 1050MHz (Std. 1000MHz), for the Core and Memory respectively.

Its dual-fan cooler ensures that the card remains cool, without being noisy either and gives you some thermal headroom if you decide to overclock the card even more.

The MSI GeForce GTX 460 1GB is a factory overclocked Geforce GTX 460 1GB, with frequencies of 780MHz (Std. 675MHz), 1560MHz (Std. 1350MHz) and 3600MHz (Std. 3600MHz) for the Core, Shader and Memory respectively.

Just like the Gigabyte 6850 above, this card features a dual-fan cooler ensures that the card remains cool, without being noisy either and gives you some thermal headroom if you decide to overclock the card even more.
Another great alternative

As you may or may not know, when new series of video cards are launched, the previous series gets heavily discounted, in order to liquidate the remaining stocks. This is often a great opportunity to grab a powerful previous-gen card at an outstanding price.

The XFX Radeon HD 5850 1GB is an excellent example, since you can now buy it for $220, or $170 after a $50(!) Mail-In Rebate.

Performance wise, the stock 5850 is undeniably faster than the stock 6850. With the Radeon 6850 and Geforce GTX 460 1GB overclocked, all three cards are about on par, but you can also overclock the Radeon 5850 and get even more performance out of it.

Power consumption wise, the Radeon 6850 is the lowest at load, followed by the Radeon 5850 (+~20W) and then the GTX 460 1GB (+~30W).

If you don’t mind the mail-in rebate, the XFX Radeon HD 5850 1GB is the card to get in my opinion. Even if you mind the rebate, it remains a great alternative at $220.

Any of those three cards will run the majority of games maxed out at 1920 x 1080, with less or more AA/AF, depending on the game.

Do NOT get a crappy PSU, it will end up costing you money in the end. Capricorn showed me a good article on it.. forget it now though.

When they review the cheapest one is when it really opens your eye.

Bro, you just said HT is a waste of space. Stop trying to change your story. I really question how you know I am yelling over text, would be quite interesting to see how your double full time college education allowed you to come to that conclusion. I think it is quite important that when someone advices someone on what to buy, they don't bring in bullshit into the conversation because they are spending THEIR MONEY that THEY WORKED FOR.

I don't even know why it even matters because the i5-2500k doesn't even HAVE HT.

He's not bullshitting, he's a double full time college student!

PSU is a little iffy imo. I'd still buy the i5-2500k over the i7-2600 and I don't think you want to spend the extra money to go up to a i7-2600k. Not sure I'm feeling the 470 either. When do you plan on purchasing this? Within a week?

And you're not bullshitting? Where do you get a waste of space from?

HT in a quad core isn't needed, especially for what sex is doing, in fact.. he could be running on a duo core that isn't HT and still have no problems with anything he uses it for

The only reason he'd be getting these things is to boost his epeen, I was told he had a budget so I was respecting it.

Also, in the past intel.. even non intel boards that are by gigabyte have had problems with radeon.

you should check out microcenter's cpu+mobo deals, they "sell" them to you for cheaper than the cpu alone. I thought it was bogus, but my friend made a build in about an hour there and its legit.

Always I will be an intel fan (FOR LIFE!) but in terms of cheapness, amd is~~an option

imo a 700w is only needed for very weak crossfire/sli

and i3/i5 is already good enough and if you then go for one of those chipsets then nvidia would be a better decision cause idk ive just had bad experiences in ati as in DOA cards (x3)

just reading random posts and responding to them, between 460 and 470 theres been benchmark tests both ways, tbh unless you plan on getting hwbot points you wont notice a difference.

for the ram, you can get gskill ripjaw 2x2 gb 1600 mhz 9-9-9-24 for 50$ or 2x4 gb for 100$ and the heatsinks look cooler =)

also in the build posted earlier

the sandybridge processor you picked is P67 and the motherboard is P55

so i would go with an i7 870/860 if you pick p55 chipset (also got my 870 for 80$ cheaper than newegg from microcenter)

some random unorganized thoughts and my 1c

I didn't tell you what I use it for. I only told you 1 game I like :p. I play TF2, MW2, soon Black Ops, GTA IV, dad plays Crysis and some other shit. And some of those are kinda slower on here.

Should be able to run all of those without a problem with pretty much anything people have said in here ;)
