Mammoth could be brought back to life

The woolly mammoth, extinct for thousands of years, could be brought back to life in as little as four years thanks to a breakthrough in cloning technology.

Previous efforts in the 1990s to recover nuclei in cells from the skin and muscle tissue from mammoths found in the Siberian permafrost failed because they had been too badly damaged by the extreme cold.

But a technique pioneered in 2008 by Dr. Teruhiko Wakayama, of the Riken Centre for Developmental Biology, was successful in cloning a mouse from the cells of another mouse that had been frozen for 16 years.

Now that hurdle has been overcome, Akira Iritani, a professor at Kyoto University, is reactivating his campaign to resurrect the species that died out 5,000 years ago.

"Now the technical problems have been overcome, all we need is a good sample of soft tissue from a frozen mammoth," he told The Daily Telegraph.

He intends to use Dr Wakayama's technique to identify the nuclei of viable mammoth cells before extracting the healthy ones.

The nuclei will then be inserted into the egg cells of an African elephant, which will act as the surrogate mother for the mammoth.

Professor Iritani said he estimates that another two years will be needed before the elephant can be impregnated, followed by the approximately 600-day gestation period.

He has announced plans to travel to Siberia in the summer to search for mammoths in the permafrost and to recover a sample of skin or tissue that can be as small as 3cm square. If he is unsuccessful, the professor said, he will ask Russian scientists to provide a sample from one of their finds.

"The success rate in the cloning of cattle was poor until recently but now stands at about 30 per cent," he said. "I think we have a reasonable chance of success and a healthy mammoth could be born in four or five years."

What's the point of bringing it back to life? Its not suited to live in today's environment

Exactly! They're trying to be god(which reminds me of jurassic park, where one guy goes god creates dinosaurs, god kills dinosaurs, god creates man, man kills god, man creates dinosaurs and dinosaurs kill man)

Yet another reason to add to my "Moving to a cave because" list.

Not to say that cloning research is bad or anything, it would have great possibilities for human use (organs, limbs, whole people, and so on). But randomly cloning ancient beasts that are long extinct…probably not the safest idea lol

I agree that cloning body parts such as you listed is a tremendous idea. But we have already done that, if I recall correctly. I was just watching a thing about it on a show while I was bored. And the only clones of full body things that were ever created were highly malformed and much different from the original object that was cloned.

Not to mention that cloning a creature that would just not last in this day of age is just slaughter. It is pure torture. Why would anyone want to purposely do that to an animal? No matter where they put the animal, it would eventually die due to overheating.

Unless they seriously altered the way the creature is and lived in the past, I don't think this little plan to be God of theirs is going to work at all. They are better off spending the tax payer's money to find a cure for more serious things. Or even just spend it on harlots, for God's sake. Just don't try to be God and eventually just cause the animal they are trying to clone to go extinct AGAIN. But this time it would not be for natural causes.

Well, I LOVED Jurassic Park as a kid. And I always have dreamed of the day that a velociraptor would eat my stupid sister. I hope that day is soon!

100 bucks this won't be done in 4 years?

1st of all the climate the Mammoth used to live in is much different than now. Were going through global warming. Definitely no Ice age around the corner.

2nd of all the Mammoth is atleast 2 times bigger than a African Elephant. The baby will not be "healthy" due to obvious complications.

From: wiki
While large, woolly mammoths were impressive animals, they were, in fact, not noticeably taller than present-day African elephants, though they were heavier. Fully grown mammoth bulls reached heights between 2.8 m (9.2 ft) and 4.0 m (13.1 ft); the dwarf varieties reached between 1.8 m (5.9 ft) and 2.3 m (7.5 ft).[7] They could weigh up to 8 tonnes (8.8 tons)

But what if dinosaurs are unable to be consumed by humans? Perhaps their meat is poisonous to us or they give some kind of disease that humans do not have an immunity to? Or maybe they just taste nasty?

Everyone commenting about how theres no habitat that is proper for Woolly Mammoths… you seem to be forgetting we have science!

If you owned a zoo you would be stupid not to want a woolly mammoth, it would be a massive tourist trap.

Interesting. If this does happen to come about, it means that cloning oneself should be possible in the next century. That could be a good or really really bad thing, depending on your perspective. (Imagine 100 George Bushes :P).

I personally think this is pretty interesting not so much for a practical use but for an achievement and the next step in genealogy development. If you can bring back a 5,000 year-old mammoth, why not a caveman? :D
