Computer Build

Hey, I'm going to buy a new computer soon, this is a build my friend made for me.
(I'm going to remove the wifi, CD/DVD Drive, and the Game Card thingy on the bottom making it about 870$ before tax/shipping).

I currently have a 2.8Ghz Pentium 4 With 1G of DDR Ram and integrated graphics (96 MB I think?) So obviously it's about time for an upgrade.

I never really computer game, because I can't with such a low speced comp, so that's what this computer will be for.

I guess my price range is about 800-900$ but CHEAPER WOULD BE A LOT NICER!

Here is the build that he made for me

I want 4G ram and Video Card that can run most games on decently high settings, but not TOO pricy, and mid-tower size. That's all I really care about I guess, so make the best you can between $800-900. Try not to deviate too much from the current build UNLESS you can provide a good reason/price why!

Thanks Guys.
I'm ready for the shitstorm of over 9000 different builds coming my way, AHH!

Looks pretty nice. You could go a bit cheaper and still get something decent

You can go waaayyyy cheaper on the mobo and ram. You might want to overclock if you're going with that cpu. You could also go cheaper on the psu. The gpu looks good, as does the case.

Depending on what you're going to do, you may be better buying a high end 4 core CPU (like my AMD Phenom II X4 3.4GHz [BE]). I'm very jealous of how cheap you can get that GPU, in the UK the cheapest 6870 is £180.63, with the more decent ones hitting £200 and beyond.

Next time I upgrade, does someone who lives in the US want to buy me some, and I'll pay deliver? :P

Yeah I was kind of wondering about this.
Should I go with my 2.8 Six core? Or get something like a 3.2 or higher Four core? What do you all think?

Yeah I know the ram is pricy/overkill but i think I'll just stick with it.
I think my friend just chose the mono because it came bundled wig the processor and it had a deal with it.

Thanks everyone for tr suggestions.

This is what i recently built for my GF who wanted a new PC
you should be able to shave of quite a bit of cash from it.

Like Blue ray drive, Solid State Drives (very nice though) only go for one graphics card, and so on

To be honest, if I were to build a new pc now, I would definitely go with a Sandy Bridge CPU. In your price range for example i5-2400.

First of all it has better benchmark results than the x6 1055T. Secondly, it has better performance/price ratio. Thirdly it consumes less power, so less heat. Lastly, you get the added benefit of having an extra GPU, which, if you combine it with an nVidea card with Optimus technology, appears to be a very feasible combination.

But that would throw your whole setup around. But I thought I'd just give you my 2 cents.

no unless you consider the sims 3 a game….. she tried to make me jealous of it, so i would get a job (just finished Uni and cant find anything decent)
i play on it alot as well its very nice, i really do like the Solid State Drives, even just for a OS boot, its brilliantly quick

blue ray is mostly so we can watch movies on it, that i set to the TV by using a HDMI cable

Definitely buy a Sandy Bridge CPU if you are going to buy right now… The hexacore CPUs from AMD are almost never worth it, especially if you just play games. Unless you plan on doing some sort of highly parallel work (video encoding, rendering) than just stick to a quad core.

Yeah, but the processor I picked has AMAZING reviews and a pretty decent price for what it is, and this AMD can easily be overclocked to 3.5+ with the stock sink.

If you go for the hexcore, then I might have to link you something about the previous flagship AMD processor (recently a very slightly better one was released):

I recently bought this from Newegg.ca: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314
8gb (2x4gb) DDR3 1600 RAM for $110.

It's twice the amount of RAM, with only slightly lower timings, for $10 less. I remember, when I initially bought the parts for my current computer, that product was worth $250. ^^

The only thing your comp will be missing is an SSD. :p

Well if it's referring to this:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115074

It costs $14 more than the 6 core, and is 3.1GHz
The AMD is $14 cheaper, 6 cores, and can be overclcoekd to 3.5Ghz+, so wouldn't that be kind of better?

I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING OK?!

The 2600k can overclock up to 4.8GHz on air.

And forget about cores man, seriously. Cores only matter if you have highly parallelized software. If you buy a PC right now, buy a sandy bridge. AMD won't have anything out till summer.

I love these Discussions because it will all ways end up as a Intel v AMD fan boys.

Face it each has there own advantages and disadvantages, i prefer AMD because they are cheap, good quality and overclock well. i dont buy intel anymore because the last system i built using there stuff broke shortly after the one year mark.(this happened twice actually, and no i wasn't stupid with it no overclocking ect)

Here is the link about my PC i built for my GF, it has AMD and Intel version for about the same price Click Here

This has nothing to do with Intel vs AMD. Intel released their new processors, AMD did not. So the choice is really simple. If you want to build a pc with an AMD CPU, you should wait about 6 months (Bulldozer). Ohterwise go for intel.

And no I'm not intel fanboy, just compare the available CPU's.

if you want to save some cash go for the 1075, its cheaper and can overclock to the speed of the 1095, but yeh not overly important.

also you got SSD yet?

It is the best for a OS Drive, i just cant get over it, sorry. (not pointed at you just in general)

Bulldozer is said to be a ridiculous improvement over current processors and will come with oct-core standard. Thats a nice step up if you ask me.

Yeah, you tell me which one is better. The 1100T doesn't even beat the i7-2600k in multi-threaded benchmarks.

Face it, until middle summer Intel has the best CPUs unless AMD price cuts somewhere. (Llano mite be cool)

And even then there is no guarantee Bulldozer will be amazing (God, everyone I talk to is hoping though otherwise we all get buttraped by Intel's pricing)

Edit: Even the i5-2500k beats the 1100T at every benchmark but one, and it's 30-40$ cheaper.

well for a start there is a 70+ price difference, for me it has to be good quality and cheap, which like i said in my last post Intel has failed twice to provide this.

we can continue to debate this for weeks, it wont change the fact that i prefer AMD now since Intel produces have "Blown Up" on me and i will only recommend AMD now

Anyways we should stay on topic and not argue about this

While I understand that you advise AMD because you have bad experience with Intel, we all know that that's just unlucky, because not many people have CPU issues in the first place.

So instead of advising what we 'like', I suggest we stick to the facts. And these facts say that if you want to build a PC now, you should buy an intel CPU. You were the one who suggested we refrained from going all "Intel vs AMD fanboy", but you appear to be the only one here who actually uses "taste" as a valid argument.

Yeah, I don't even know how he wrecked a CPU, nevermind two! Did he forget to apply thermal paste? Maybe the heatsink? Did he take a blow torch to his CPUs?

But yeah, there really isn't any reason to buy AMD when you spend 200+ on a CPU seeing as the i5-2500k is a beast, and if you go over $300 the i7-2600k is an even bigger beast.

and to Furyan and Capricorn, pm me if you want to keep talking about it, dont want to side track the thread.

If a powersurge wrecked your shit than yes, you did do something wrong.

And as for price for a Sandy Bridge set up, he'd pay at most 50$ more but get like 50% more performance in some cases. It's not like he's building a computer for under 400$.

you do know that if lighting hit the power line (power surge), i cant "magicly" stop it.

also i am not sure if it was that, because it would have fried more than just the cpu, correct me if i am wrong, but i am pretty sure that it would break more than just the cpu

How high end do you need? I don't think you need to go THAT crazy

processor / mobo combo
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.581242

psu
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139018

simple ram (non overclocking)

dvd / cd rw etc

if you don't want stock cooling you can always get a simple fan that does a great job like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118223

and depending on what games you want to play… two different gpu's
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150448
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150396

I mean there you're looking at.. around 500-600 depending on what you want to get

you COULD go SSD but I am waiting till they're cheaper.. right now all my stuffs rated 7.8+ on the windows 7 rating except hard drive because it isn't a SSD

a simple case?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119115

nothing fancy… but that's just what I'd do if you

I don't know what you do ofc and if you really need a six core, I think pretty much any amount of multi tasking can be done fine on a quad

From: YoHoJo

I wouldn't as said above the fans that come with will handle the stock fine

if you are going to overclock in the future I'd go for a simple yet highly effective cooling device like the H50 or H70
