.. really?!
I'll actually gain some quite a lot of interest if they reintroduce wilderness and free trade the way it originally was.
Voting right now with all my avail accounts.
Is it possible to make a script that allows you enter all the usernames of your accounts and submits a vote using all of them? (Having realistic breaks between each submission!)

If the majority of players don't vote in favour Jagex
Does this mean all acounts ever made, if so there is no way the vote will go though.
I really want this but i think its a big stunt that will never happen :(

Doubt it will happen, in the post concerning this it says "we'll revert to our old ways if the vast majority of runescape agree with it."
Sounds sketch, I think they're trying to make an illusion of trying to do something, just to get some of their players back before the inevitable disappointment. But if it indeed comes through will be truly awesome!

we need to make a script to parse the highscores and just grab names, and then enter them into the contest….checking "anonymous" randomly…of course all the same ip might be weird…
Oh Hi Oh

Could someone write a script that just goes through all the users on the runescape Highscores and votes with those names? :D

Result from this update: massive increase in SRL's activity?
E: Also, a possible problem with making a script parse out and retrieve all the usernames and submit them is that, AFAIK, there is no way to check whether or not a username has already been submitted. Hence, if we all run the same script and submit the same usernames, several times, Jagex has an easy way to see who was cheating the votes or not.

By the way, I feel like noting that the voting script would have to go through a proxy for (preferably) each vote. Otherwise, such a script could just make JaGex nevermind this whole thing. Also, shuffle the results you parse a lot! In case it's not obvious; DO NOT vote sequentially with the parsed results.

Jagex really wants its players back:
"Register your vote by the 14th of January 2011
Please register your vote if you want to see the return of free trade and the danger of the original wildy. 100,000 votes certainly won't be enough. Perhaps not even 1,000,000. It will take you and every one of your friends, ex-friends and probably even enemies to register sufficient votes to bring it back.
Simply put in your character name and if you want to stay anonymous just tick the box. Make your voice heard and your vote count! "

I think the safest method for auto-voting this poll would be to make new accounts and have them vote, while periodically switching ips because of:
"* If you do not have a RuneScape account, click here to create one. After creating an account, you may return to this page and vote using the account's player name."
On second note: Bot away! I don't think Jagex cares if people cheat their poll system, I think they hope and expect people to do so. Why else would they allow you to create a new account to be able to vote? Why else can any username be input without any confirmation/verification from the actual account user? Furthermore, they are encouraging people to spread the word and there isn't a "no" option on the poll either. Jagex will definitely be going through with this update IMO.

Unless they got some program for that to do that… Else its to hard. This thing will hit probably hit 3 million votes by january 14th I dont know if they can check each ip…
Also Jagex must really have some anti-bot anti-rwt for them to consider bringing back the wilderness and free trade.

Google.analytics.***
Guiness world records*
No logging in
First of all google.analytics is tracking it therefore they are watching the internet trafficking of the web for this vote. This means they are tkaing the count and the age groups into consideration to whose coming into the site and how much it crashes or many other statistics.
2nd guiness world records is being set. This is by the trafficking of the web which they are watching to make a world record of the people coming into the database or some other topic so jagex is setting a world record aparently
3rd no logging in… thats just obvious that this is only for the record and trafficking becuase if this was a real poll and jagex was listening they would make you log in otherwise what i did was i officiated 30+names to get wildy back for myself and friends accounts. OBVI fake
If it was real you would log in… there wouldnt be suspicious trafficking activities and a record wouldnt be in place and it would be just totally different and a main page poll. If anything theyll tell us april fools in april that this was a complete joke and they set a record off all of us and you other people.
This makes me uneasy…^

The amount of times you vote doesn't help anything, the second you load the page it grabs the REFERER header, then it port scans you for open ports…, checking for a proxy or a VPN. Hence why they said it doesn't matter if 1M player accounts vote, its all after the unique IPs, has nothing to do with the counter, the counter is just for show. Proof: Mod Mark:

That's what I was saying, they have something up there sleeves or they are desperate for more members. I've been a member @ Rune-server for like 2-3 years and a few members discussed the flaws of some Java bots detectability. Maybe they also recognized the flaw smart has that Moparisthebest pointed out.

Personally, I think the grand exchange is a great tool. I don't think it should regulate our trade though. I feel that we should all be able to set the price we want to set and maybe the grand exchange would give us a current average price $$$ on the product.

Maybe the new account registration system with the emails has something to do with it - it would take much longer for someone to make hundreds of accounts and stuff now. Meaning less botters (unless they set up their own mail server and some interesting scripts) and more customers back because of the wildy.

I don't think they will put a no option, because if they wanted to they would've done it already, maybe at this point they probably just want to know how many would like to bring back the old wildy(ahhh… the good ol days).

Still 23 days left on the poll…..
If Jagex doesn't revert the changes I think they will loose a lot more business because of getting everyones hopes up and letting them down. If they do bring it back they will gain a lot because people will once again enjoy the game and purchase memberships.

I think he states a rather understandable point; if they do this, and give players a little hope only to crush it and laugh in their faces, I must say I will sympathize with any and all who choose to do this – I too will be slightly frustrated if it turns out that they introduced all this fuss over nothing.

Why don't you have to enter a password to vote? This sounds suspicious. You could literally just enter all your friends' names.
Personally, I think this will ruin the economy, will ruin many training methods, the highscores will be harder to climb (for those who care), and I'll feel less comfortable doing wildy clues. I'm not voting yes.

No way actually the economy was better when the wildy was here and free trade. The wilderness is way to easy now. You can basically spend a whole day there and not die. But its up to you.
I did a lot of research on Runescape and the Guinness world record. I cant find anything at all to link them together other then the fact that it got a GWR in 2008 for being the most popular game…

There was some thread a while back with a list of like a thousand players that were all going to get banned or some nonsense. If i wasnt so lazy i would search for it, but you could search like massive ban list or something of the sort.
kingarabian
2010-12-22 22:33:41
Yeah, there was a list of players who were close to being banned or which I call, the "Warning Banhammer List" posted a year ago I think. There was plenty of accounts and if you use a bot to vote for it and if what King of the Nites said about a thousand players is true, you could get a couple of hundred votes for each account and that'd be about two-hundred thousand votes, which would make it 1.5m votes.

Is it really the votes that matter now because when you vote it brings you to three percentages one for "yes"–"no"—"dont mind" and so far last I checked yes had 88% no had like 8% dont mind had 3%. My point is that even if we dont get another million votes back but the percentage saying "yes" is overwhelming will the number of votes even matter?

Ah well, I stand by what I said, I think that this should at least by phased in, instead of one day just changing everything.

Yo, I don't think were going to get a whole lot of votes. For one thing, you need password for your username, and for a second thing, you can only vote once per account. But we have a great chance of getting what we want back. I'm just saying don't worry about the number of votes were going to get, because I am sure we don't have 1.5m players. I think we will get 800k votes MAX, but on average 300-600k votes in my opinion. Number of votes doesn't matter, it's if we get more than the NO's.

Ah, ok. Well it was quite easy to merchant before because all that was required was a stockpile of money. Now, a little research must be done on prices, access to the item, and the market prices must be watched closely.
Seems easier now then when no set prices are available.

Sounds like we get the best of both worlds - the GE to sell our botted goods on and freedom of prices. However, the items that Jagex has price locked (willows logs, anyone?) will likely drop in value, possibly to a point at which they won't sell on the GE anymore.

If we lose the limit but keep the GE could a item become worthless and be free for a couple of mins before the demand goes up when poeple find out?

Apparently, as was stated in this thread, Jagex will use the mid price of items for GE, which would never be 0. The price (even min) can't go below 1, actually.

Google Trends don't mean much. It just means how many people are searching for it. People aren't going to search for it as much, as most people know about it already (and know it's just a .com). It could just mean not as many people are searching for it, which could be a concern, but not as much (word of mouth is more powerful than someone randomly typing "runescape" into Google).
Also comparing "WoW" (which is both a word and an acronym) to Runescape will of course make "WoW" result higher due to it being a common 3-letter word. "World of Warcraft" would be better to query.

Actually it's the other way around. If you look closely the peaks of the graph match up almost exactly. Most peaks are around the middle of each year, corresponding to summer break for students, which encourages the use of porn as well as RS because people have a lot more free time.

Look at it this way, the people who voted "don't care", really don't care, because they are skillers, or just don't pk. Also, they know that free trade will help them too. The "No'ers" are stuck up people, who try to be mature but suck at it, and they think Free Trade will bring RWT'ers and bots, too bad, they still have that without the free trade. The "Yes'ers"
are mature or knowledgable players who know that this will help RS in all categories for the players. They are veteran players who actually know about RS. That is the explanation of why we outnumber the No's. Because we actually know things and do not just jump to conclusions :D.

You are wrong. I totally understand the No-voters, they don't want any more bots and scammers into the game, or they just like the pvp as it is. I personally think that the current pvp system is better than the old wilderness.
The only one sucking at maturity here is you. And we know that it's a fact that botting will majorly increase if the update goes through. Atm people only bot with their mains, but after Free Trade they will make armies of bots just to collect money. The number of bots will explode, especially f2p.

It will not help those legit players who want to mine in the mining guild without having to compete with dozens of bots. That's not "jumping into conclusions" at all. This certainly won't help players in all categories as you say. Also, voting Yes or No has nothing to do with maturity. It's just an opinion of how they like to play their game.

This is a botting site, what do you expect? 99% of people here will vote for free trade & wilderness so why are you calling him immature? That, to me, is immature.
IMO, all that can come from this (possible) update is good. RuneScape was 10x better when it was here, and when they took it away a lot of people quit as an essential part of the game had gone. They've tried fruitlessly to get the same effect, but from what I've seen, they are to no avail. It seems logical from a main business and customer satisfaction point of view to bring it back.

@Marpis, I do not mean it directly. We have our own opinions. But how the No'ers act on the forums, talk sht to us yes'ers, and think RWT'ers coming back and whining about everything, made me say that. RWTers are still here without free trade. Botting, still here without free trade. F2P mining? That stuff is already mobbed. I can barely find myself something good to train on on f2p. Calling me immature for an opinion of mine is stupid, that is my opinion, it's what I think from what I've seen. I can prove we have different opinions, one example, quickmarch, we might have same, we might have different.

You and the no-voters are wrong, they are just scared of having the wilderness becoming dangerous again.
If you get scammed in today's trading system then you deserve to be scammed. The 1st trade screen shows clear exclamation marks if an item is removed/added, and the 2nd trade screen gives you a second chance to see what your trading. Hey if you lose your time to a scammer then you either need glasses or something else to help you.
Botters? A lot of people get membership to PK. When the wilderness removed they straight up lost 60k members. It's not the yes voters fault if the botters come back its Jagex's job. You no voters should complain to Jagex. WoW took severe action against botters, and they have a good MMO going with free trade and a close thing to wilderness where you loose your items.
And yes, you no voters are being pre-mature about this as you guys forgot what Runescape was, how it was made, and how it became one of the best browser MMO before it self-destructed in 07. A year or something ago China banned gold farming and selling gold for real life things. We know that the majority of these botters were Chinese (RSdemon). Jagex also said they've come within a breakthrough a month ago to tackle botters.
But you guys don't really care about scamming and botters, enough with that bull shit. You want the wildy to be open so you can have it easy while killing your green dragons, your kbd, and your corp beast. You want mining runite ore easy, and the agility arena easy. You want your clue rewards easy. While we Pkers risk 1m to kill players (who are also risking 1m) and to find out were getting 50k worth of loot. While we Pkers have to fucking sit in a corner and wait 30 minutes just to get a 25% earned potential and 2 hours to get 100% ep just to see an "improved" drop from the kills we get. We also have to constantly let ourselves die with 100-200k so we can get better drops, because of Jagex's "improved" pvp system (that you think is better than the previous on).
But thankfully that's about to be changed, as were almost at 1million votes and we have a 90% advantage on you. So I can't wait to loot your items when I Ice barrage you while your doing your clue.
Don't think I'm talking about
only you, I'm talking about every single no voter.

Haha, it's hilarious how some people really believe that we are 500k short on votes. Of course we are not short on votes. More than that: they will implement the old wildy and free trade 100% sure, they have been working on it and talking about it for months I guarantee you.
There is only 1 reason why they will keep saying "We need x more votes!". It's because people will believe it, and try to get all of their friends to vote. And thus, they are spreading the word that runescape is bringing back free trade and old wildy, probably even to people that haven't played in ages. When you realise this, you know that it is an ingenous marketing strategy, and the best possible way to get a big part of the playerbase that they lost in 2007, back into the game.

I completely agree. As it is, the botting community has a far better programmer:leecher ratio, the majority of the people who use the bots here also create them. Bringing back the old form of things will just cause leechers to come along, and that's not the sort of people I enjoy spending time with in a community. For me, this is a programmers/computer enthusiasts forum.
Yes, I'd love the old wilderness back, it brings back that feeling or fear into the game which was needed, but I have no use for an increased trade limit, and the GE currently is a really great way of buying things, what'll happen when the economy issues arise due to the no maximum or minimum?
I can understand why others would want it back, mainly because it does have some benefit to you/your friends, but I think this will just damage the botting community.

I had a feeling when Jagex made the original announcement that it would be coming back regardless; they wouldn't announce a poll for an update of such magnitude if they had no intention of doing it. I agree with Furyan in that it was simply a marketing move to get back as many of the players they lost in '07 as they could. Those who quit back then (myself included) wouldn't keep up with RS news anymore, so Jagex is relying on word of mouth to spread it.

I definitely do too. I think PvP worlds are one of the only two good things to happen to RS since '07 (the idea of the GE being the other, except that imo it was poorly implemented). However, I also want back the plain old wilderness. I'm betting they will have exclusive PvP worlds and the rest will be 'old' Wildy worlds for F2P, and Members will also get 'current' (ie safe) Wildy worlds for clue scrolls and such. But we'll have to wait and see.

This poll is just some sort of publicity scam. Jagex would not have spent 3+ years trying to stamp out gold farmers and botters just to give all that work up at the drop of a hat. Obviously they aren't hurting for members or free players, as the polls indicate, there are a lot of people paying attention here.
My thought is that they will say that the 7% who voted "No" are more important than the 90% who voted "Yes". How they will spin that story is anyone's guess.
Next they will invent 4 or 5 worlds that have unrestricted trade and unrestricted wildy and let people who want that play over there, just like the PVP worlds are now. Or maybe they will just flip-flop everything, the 99 main worlds will have unrestricted trade and wildy and there will still be a couple worlds with revenants and such.
It just seems like if they enact free trade and unrestricted wildy, then everything they have said over the past three years has been a lie: gold farmers, credit card fraud, botting, RWT, etc, etc. I can't imagine that was all some sort of complex lie on Jagex's part.
So if we assume it was true, all those problems will return with a vengeance. So what would happen at that point? The game will be ruined I fear, no matter how this all ends up, but then again, everyone has been saying that for years now, and yet we all just keep playing, don't we?

We’ve been shutting down bot-makers all around the world and prosecuting people for stealing accounts, and we’ve evolved our systems to quickly detect cheating;

Color bots are the most difficult bots to detect, as they work the same way as humans do, in terms of finding things/searching/etc. There's really nothing they can do without making huge changes that would affect the game itself so much that it's not worth it.

It is interesting how they completely nerfed pin sellers and then they say this. I think they are only suggesting / proposing this idea because they have pretty much already destroyed people's profits from the game except for account selling and such. But they are making that harder and harder with almost every update, it seems. The most recent one was the email one. There is only one way, if I remember, to remove the email. But I may be incorrect on that.
So I don't think they care anymore. They can easily just track gold sellers, too.

When I was still playing back in '07, every world through 9 or 10 was full at all hours of the day (and several more had populations in the thousands); if you look at the server list now, even world 2 isn't always full–and during peak hours.
That right there ought to tell you how many people have quit since the '07 update. Jagex realizes this, and this is a move to bring customers back in.

well when they originally got rid of the wilderness/free trade I am fairly certain that at least 50% of people would have quit or become a lot less active. (not a precis evaluation, just stating as everyone I knew quit. Including myself months later)
I did also. I remember buying the pink robes and protesting in world 2.

You can't really say when they will update it. Doubt it will even be for january. They don't need to add lots of features tho as they made everything already. I hope we will get a date after the referendum.

Trade limit should theoretically instant/ASAP, as I seem to remember Mod Andrew saying that the original trade limit implementation was "just a few lines", so surely it's merely removing those lines.
However, the wilderness will require a hell of a lot more work, as they'll have to relocate a considerable amount of quests, and various other content. Mid-year I'm going to guess for the wildy come back. Either that, or they'll slowly update it/have safe zones especially for these quests.
Thoughts?

that hurts to hear that :( I swear the freedom to kill whoever you wanted in your level range and loot everything you can off them was what made runescape the game it was! (in 2007) free trade and wildy came hand in hand and worked together :)
On this topic I actually feel that with this luxury back the chances are that even more bots will be active when this update takes place as the activity of runescape will increase dramatically so will supply and demand. or something like that anyway haha.

The reason i don't care about wildy is because i didn't know pretty much anything about rs back then and just lvled up the skills(maybe now ill get the chance)

ahh that is fair enough, I guessed that but I didn't want to say it unless it would have offended you. I would be offended if someone came up to me and accused me of being a noob(etc.) for not wanting(caring for) the wildy back due to not experiencing it. But if it comes back I am sure you will love it ;)

I have never heard of this, but hmm its chinese goldfarmers, no one knows their next move!
USFine's Moves:
1. Hire Americans from Powerbot (Specifically Sara, the last time I chatted with them.)
2. Buy Nexus scripts from RSBot.com and do not actually do any real "Labor" on their side. (Proof: I spent about an hour working with one of the "Female" live chat people setting up "Her" bot while she noted everything down on how to set things up. I hate Chinese language default computers. I really do. And you can also blame me for showing USFine.com how to bot at green dragons.)
3. Remove services for smaller games such as Gaia Online.

The actual idea of them PKing for gold is possible, but they would not bother. They are too lazy now. At least they are good for WoW gold on new servers. WHOOPTEEDOO!
Jagex is desperate. The amount that they have lost is so substantial that they are willing to open up free trade again and the wilderness.

They would be implementing some algorithms and/or detection methods to locate bots. Best to have someone test their new build before we go full out. (of course, i'm expecting the old RS to be back).

I love free trade and Wild. I just hope prices will mellow out. Right now the GE is going insane with merchant clans selling junk really low and selling everything combat related really high. (For me atleast) It's making everything really hard to afford. :( Even with the sufficient amount of botting I do it's just never enough. Or my rotten luck. 1 of the 2.
Just remember though.. What caused this to happen in the first place (the taking away of free trade)? everyone exploiting bots and getting caught. I fear if this does pass people will stop being sneaky about it and this "victory" will be short lived.

I personally voted yes for it. Like numerous others I quit playing rs back in 2007 when jagex took out the old wildy and free trade. While the GE is convenient in all, I do miss merchanting in world 2 fally, transferring items between accounts, and such. I didn't do as much pking, however i always had fun when i did. Granted jagex is probably just doing this to get players back so they make more money and i'm not too sure it'll be the same as the old free trade/wildy, but time will tell.

Hello fellow nerds
The results are in! Over 1 million people have taken part in the Wilderness and Free Trade vote over the past couple of week which is an amazing turnout! We are extremely pleased with this result, but the question is, will we get to see the old wilderness again? Will free trade be reinstated in the lands of Gielnor?
The answer is no.
Unfortunately we didn't receive enough votes to bring back the old wilderness and free trade. Yes I know 90% voted yes. I know that totals to over 1 million players voting yes. But that is not enough.
We have over 150M accounts in this game. Yes, I know 144 million of them haven't logged in for 3 years. And I know 3 million of them belong to goldfarming companies. But its still not enough.
The wilderness and free trade is not coming back. We are sorry that it has come to this. We were looking forward to it as much as you were. But that's the way it is. No arguments. Anyone that speaks out against us will be banned.
On the plus side we managed to nab ourselves a guinness world record! Highest voted poll for a MMPORG!
Have fun with your EP!
Happy Scaping

No I don't think they will do that. If they were to do that, they would have to set up special worlds where you'd have to subscribe to enter the world to participate. It all comes down to this. Is Jagex ready to face the full Chinese invasion of bots and gold farmers? Are their mass detection systems ready to handle and quickly disperse these ridiculous Chinese people. And does Jagex have the manpower to ban scammers quickly and efficiently. Seeing how Jagex openly let us vote for this, they hopefully feel ready to combat these enemies once again. In '07 they were not able to efficiently remove these nuisances. So instead of just banning China (which they should of did.. everyone else does it) they implemented all these new and ridiculous rules and regulations.
