I have an XP PC and a Windows 7 laptop.
I would like to share a few folders on the XP machine so I can access them on the laptop, I would also like a password to be required in order to view these folders.

How would I go about doing this with Windows file sharing/any programs?

Thanks.

Make a new folder, right click it, go to properties and select the "Sharing" tab. Select "Share this folder" and that's it :)
To find the folder, just go on the pc you want, open windows explorer and go to to "Networks"

I use a Homegroup, but I'm not sure if that's only Windows 7 or not.

You should be able to access the files on any computer on your network, though. The files you wish to share may need to be in your User/Shared folder.

Got it all working except for making it require a password to access the scared folder. Followed some tutorials online. Thanks guys.
Still need to figure out how to password it though.

This did the trick, pretty cool.

Meh just adding in…

I eff'ing hate the new W7 sharing methods on default. God damn it's so annoying. Seriously who needs a password on file sharing on a home personal network?

And even still when I set that off I can't navigate subfolders without having to share each and every one.

Can't it just be like XP and when you do \\192.168.1.1\C$ it gives you access to everything?

To be honest, stuff like this is one of the better things in newer versions of Windows. Their permission system is still awkwardly flawed but at least they're trying to do something about it.

Well I suppose if you are looking at it from a security standpoint, but I still just like the ease of being able to grab anything and everything if I want it. Lol
