14-Dec-2010 - Damage Soaking and New Hitsplats

With this latest update, the damage soaking ability has been added to much of RuneScape’s armour, which means they will also now absorb a percentage of any damage you receive over 200 life points. Previously, only three Dungeoneering rewards had this ability (the farseer, eagle-eye and chaotic kiteshields), but it has been applied to many other shields, headgear, body and leg armour, in all three combat disciplines.

This ability has been added in line with the combat triangle, so you’ll find that magic armour is generally better at soaking melee damage, for instance. Also, how much damage you can soak is cumulative based on all the armour you have equipped, which should add an extra dimension to choosing what combat gear you wear.

All armour stat tables in the Game Guide have been updated with this new information, so you might wish to take a look there first. Most of these tables are found in the Skills category (particular in Magic, Melee and Ranged), but there are also some found in the Combat, Activities and Miscellaneous Guides categories.

To complement this update and provide further feedback during combat, you'll find we've also made extensive changes to the hitsplat system, as we first mentioned in the Damage Control blog.

The main features of the new hitsplats are:

* New animated hitsplat graphics.
* Damage type is now displayed next to the hitsplat to help identify what damage you are taking - melee, ranged, magic - and hence what prayer/curse might help reduce or prevent the damage.
* Further damage types – you can now distinguish between cannon, deflected and other damage (e.g. desert heat, dragon breath).
* ‘Max hit’ splats – if you hit your max hit (or above it via use of special attacks) you'll see a different, more vibrant hitsplat that will show off your combat ability.
* ‘Faded’ splats – any damage caused or taken by either you or your familiar will be shown by a vibrantly coloured hitsplat. Any damage caused or taken by other players will be shown by a faded hitsplat. This allows you to see what damage you are taking or dealing if you are in a group, so now you'll really know if you were the big damage dealer in your group!
* If your armour helps you soak damage, you'll have another splat displayed alongside the damage, so you can see how much each hit has been reduced by.

In other news…

Duke Horacio has realised that players may want to have multiple anti-dragon shields, so will now offer another shield to any who ask.

Not bad, Looking forward to getting back to dungeoneering again with that update…

well at least it is easier to buy anti-dragon sheilds now, and faster.

and also what does it mean when it says "soak" in damage?

I smell a script and that anti-dragon shield will crash

Soak was from a recent update about reducing high damage

The damage looks like wow now, also if you have full rune on, you won't see when he hits 0 on you… kinda sucks.

In other news…

Whenever the right-click menu is so long that entries are grouped together, you can now simply left-click on a group to perform the default action for that item (without having to go down into the sub-menu). For instance, on dropped items, the default action would be 'Take' (one at a time, to mimic the old functionality). We've also corrected the ordering of grouped right-click menus.

They added information to the update page, you were just too damn fast. Haha.

I actually have been waiting for this update since their last dev blog. I think this adds a lot to the higher content of the game.

The way they make it sounds, anything that hits over 200 will have your armour absorb some of the impact, so higher hits won't hit as hard.

Don't really makes scripts any more, but I'm definitely looking into a shield collecting script.

EDIT: So far so good. Got the script to go down the stairs, check if the door is open (and open it if it isn't), and talk to the Duke.

Now scripts can easily identify your own hit splashes… decent.

How so?

I personally thought this update was GREAT, combat has a new feel along with the similar graphics although much more information augmented.

Toward the absorption system… it's a step in the right direction to balance the combat triangle, I honestly think that since the armors are categorized in three classes each slot of armor should have same absorption values for items in same class. (Meaning rune full helmet, mithril medium helmet, or bronze full helmets would all have the same absorption values, same for leather chaps, Karils bottom, or black d'hide chaps.)

The reason I think in this way (went into very little depth) is because the absorption really isn't that huge of a factor, and it would truly add "balance" to the game, it would be similar to the way guild wars functions I guess, but I always though guild wars had their shit down (PvP wise.)

It would be nice if all the barrows armor had different absorption rates. The only determining factor between which set (of the melee brothers) i use is cost and looks, and if i need prayer then i might use verac's.

The script is still a bit temperamental, so bear that in mind. Until I sort the bugs out, I'd recommend to watch the script if you're running it.

clearly looks like you haven't played the old school RS or just appreciate it </3 , where there was no need for these BS updates to make the graphic or w/e look good, man if i cared about graphics that much i would stick to WoW or my XBOX, what was fun about the old RS was the thrill of luring/pking/actually working to get your 99's , which was highly respected and not just botted it to 99. Seriously man the scamming/trading/merchanting nonstop was just what made up the whole Runescape and to be honest it was really easy to relate real life to an RPG, you would learn tricks and such… and that what Runescape was, not some bunch of bullshiz bubble hits or w/e this gay update is all about.

Cheerz </3 Long Live SRL and Go Die RS and drop by my house and say hi at world 18 <3.

I feel like this is pretty much the shared sentiment of everyone who played RSC back when it was just RuneScape. The change to a 3d engine was great, but I feel like most of the updates went downhill after that. The GE was a good idea, but I feel like it could have been implemented much better, and the trade limits thing is just pure BS. And what's with all of this PvP world/Bounty world stuff? Just go classic wilderness or go home.

So what you're saying is that you don't like the graphics, and you wish people didn't bot?

You're either out of your mind, or something just doesn't click up there… You're part of the reason 99 don't matter much anymore. One thing I do agree with though is free trade.

I didn't like the 3d update at all when it came out. Now I'm kinda used to it but I would still rather play rsc than rs2 if rsc wasn't dead.

There were lots of bots for rsc and people used to run like 10 at the same time.

the graphics are pathetic, it was perfect before but, just cause they had lost so many users since the new updates made many people quit, they had to come up with some new crap and it kind of worked for the newcomers who have never seen the Old RS. and I do wish there wasn't as much bots as there is today, the 99's aren't well respected as they use to be.

of course there was, but most of them were the Chinese, or just like really down low, it was called Aryan i believe lol, but today it's known to everyone , if you got a 99 it's most likely has been botted lol…. back in the old RS it was hard to determine if it was or not you see.

I personally like the new graphics, and as I said in my opinion you'd have to be insane not to like them and like RSC graphics over it.

Anyways, what I do miss about RSC is the fact that combat was much much much more balanced, and a lot of NPC combats were actually challenging, the game in general was more challenging… but let's not forget that we're all seasoned runescape players here, and as the game went on we've learnt more and more about the game…

To me, there really isn't anything left to learn in runescape, before runescape was sort of an "adventure," now it's dull… so I set up my scripts, run my bot, work on functions as I play RS to just play around with that (I play legit through SMART just if I ever come up on anything I need to note such as tile locations, and also to lower the chances of me getting banned,) than I log in to check up on my guy, possibly check cool new gear I can wear… PK for a bit… and log off.

Before (to me) gold was hard earned and I actually valued it, now it's like - make a mil, lose a mil… all the same.

It just shocks me that people actually think that such a grindfest is actually an accomplishment and not a waste of time.

Quite frankly, runescape has the most unreasonable leveling time out of anything I've ever played, and is the only thing that required any botting for me not to go insane.

I agree 200% on that. Would you believe me if I said that i learned how to script just so that I could bot on Rs.
