About as useless as hex editing.

Actually injecting is far from useless, but it is easily detectable (if even attempted, but if I'm not mistaken jagex doesn't do this yet.) Anyways injecting doesn't personally interest me, but packet spoofing is quite cool on the other hand…

Packet spoofing would create the ultimate bot, but there would be far too many packets to spoof due to jagex realizing this is possible… and creating macro detection system and probably some type of protocol for all the packets.

This means that not only would you have to send runescape packets of specific actions (which was previously possible, and is still possible but you'll DEFINETLY get banned for it) but also packets for things that the macro detection system takes note of, such as packets of mouse movements, positions, and virtually every packet that the client sends which is necessary to not get flagged by the system.

The only way to figure out which packets are to sniff those packets, figure out what they are, and attempt to duplicate them. To make all of this harder jagex probably encrypts them.

That being said, after you create this said bot which spoofs packets through a lot of boring and tedious work (which you will most likely have to update every single small update), you would actually be able to find glitches in the game allowing you to create hacks, which is how the first item duping appeared on the scene (sending trade packets with false values which weren't checked server-side.)

Feroc1ty a week ago or so heard some very harsh words in his Member Application due to his attitude.

When I saw this post I didn't even realize it was the same person at first.

I've set Ferocity's reputation at 10, from -39.

Hopefully we won't see any red squares on his profile no more.

My god, that is just pure stupidity in my opinion.. He bloody diserves that -rep, don't bloody remove it for a single post !

The COMMUNITY decreased his rep and you're making it higher than most people at SRL have !

If it was me, I'd have waited ~2 weeks to see if all his posts are helpful. If so, maybe he learned. He will probably never change, but rather just mask it– just like all of us have our flaws and will never change them, but rather cover them up.
As long as he keeps them covered up and doesn't revert back to himself, that's all I want.

Would have been nice to see him earn his rep back from negatives though. If he goes around making lots of helpful posts that would revert to a positive pretty quickly.

To be completely honest, I never saw to much of a flaw. He spoke his mind exactly as he would to his best friend or something. He could have slightly masked it to seem more appropriate, but I never did much a year ago either.

Now I think 10 points is a bit high, 0 would have been fine with me

This man insults members, he has multiple accounts, comes back after a ban, yet after ONE post, you completely remove his -rep and even turn it positive?

Are you insane ?!

What's the big deal? Reputation is just a number and a set of icons on the forum. Changing his reputation won't change the opinions of the members; they have to do that themselves.

Then why reset the reputation? What use does it serve if it is reset anyway? Much like infractions that expire.

Why are you asking me? I didn't reset Feroc1ty's reputation. I'm simply commenting on the matter after the fact.

If the community have set his rep to -39, it's his job to work it up to positive by proving himself to the community, and not get it set to +10 just because of a few good posts.

This makes things very easy for everyone.

It's giving someone a new chance; If it works out well, great.

If not, then you can't say you didn't have the opportunity.

Right, I understand why people are concerned, but let's be real, if feroc1ty doesn't change then his rep will go right back down.

It's up to this community. If you have a problem with something someone says, -rep. If you really like something, +rep. That's all there is to it. Time will only tell.

That's fine and dandy, but maybe 0 would have been a more appropriate number. New members start at 0, correct?

It should have been reset to whatever a new account gets.

If he deserves rep wouldn't the community do it themselves? It only makes sense to me.

Yeah, and one member of the community shouldn't have made the decision alone.

Daedolon

Rep really doesn't mean much in my opinion. It really only becomes useful to the newcomers of the forums; it gives them an idea of who's nice and who's naughty. But most of the time you already know the person well enough in the forum that in cases like this if Feroc1ty's rep was green, everyone still see's him as a bit of a jerk (at least that's how I'm percieving it). So really, this accomplished nothing.

There's the old saying: "You can polish a turd, but it's still a turd."

Do I stop you from clicking the rep button?

My button just happens to be bigger. Deal with it.

Users usually start at 10 rep anyway.

If anyone's read The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, this whole situation is kind of funny.

Basically guys, RM just gave him a +rep, and a rep from RM is worth a hell of a lot more than mine or most of yours would be. Let's all just get over this. If feroc1ty says something rude, then derep him, otherwise, to put it nicely, just deal with it.

That's a little arrogant, and a bit besides the point anyways.

But I honestly don't care either way; reputation in reality isn't a stat, it's an impression people have.

So it's nothing an admin can change at the click of a button.

I think the +10 is generous, however I think feroc1ty was eventually just being de-repped because eventually people WANTED to make a big deal out of things. notice the TWO "eventually"s, he has been a bit of a **** at time, but other times, people are a bit of a dick to him.

2010-12-08 21:37:34

I do not agree with all of the things feroc1ty has done or said, some of it has made me outright frustrated. But people, don't worry about it too much, it's rep… Yes, it does serve a little bit of a purpose and incoming people will have somewhat of an idea on someone at rep/glance. If someone does something bad, neg rep. If someone does something good, pos rep. It is as simple as that. Yes, I think that RM was right in his thought (good post = ++), but wrong in his way of going about that (change his rep). Although, I see it the same as RM just hitting 'rep' on the post; maybe he should have just said "look at this really good post by feroc1ty, I rep'd him for it; you should consider giving him +rep too." I see it as punishments and rewards. I would like to see feroc1ty learn some about community. People here getting all bent out of shape and over reacting to something that really could have been handled with ease doesn't do anything to help.

I think it's a great idea. If he is still a jerk, then I'm sure it will get right back into the negatives soon enough….

Also, feigned niceness is just as good a real niceness, so long as it is consistent. That post from him really shows a huge change in my eyes. Instead of saying "packet unjectionations is gay" he said it so much more eloquently and respectfully.
Keep it up Feroc1ty, more posts like that please. :)

edit: at least it's a start to some trying.

I don't think its a start or finish to anything. And it probably won't make much difference anyway. Just clearing the rep won't change the opinions people have…and it won't make the user change. Will just change the first impression new people to the forum get of him.

and people wont know what to think because of his rep.

it would have been perfectly fine if you just added rep to him the old fashion way

if he honestly deserved it. he should have gotten it from the community. he should have earned it like everybody else does.
