Homo/bisexuality
Felt like starting a convo, so what are your guys views on it?
Personally, it doesn't bother me (because I am :p). People don't choose their sexuality; it's apparently caused by an imbalance of hormones during pregnancy.
Added to poll to see how you guys sway.
No offence/flame intended in this topic, it's just a bit of a heated subject sometimes.
Little story:
It all started, as a rough guess, just over a year ago. I started getting attracted to guys, and I thought that I was going through 'that stage' which is often mentioned, so I dismissed it as nothing, and thought that in a little while it would go back to how I remember, but it didn't. I started to question myself, doubt myself, and sometimes got really down about it, but eventually (it took quite a long while) I got used to the fact that I was liking boys as well as girls, so I though "OK, well I'm bi. That's fine." Recently I've noticed another change in myself. I've noticed that I'm getting less and less attracted to girls, so, once again, I'm questioning myself, but I'm all good with it this time. Instead of taking it out on the people around me and myself, I'm taking it in my stride. Now, I think (key word there) I'm gay, but like I know all too well, that can change. So far, I've told two people (both gay) apart from you guys. The first is actually quite a pathetic story. I was grovelling to him anonymously on FormSpring, but ending up inboxing him on Facebook. He helped me out quite a bit, and gave me some advice on how to deal with it. The second person I pretty much told straight up. It wasn't face to face, but on Facebook chat, but still made me feel pretty good about myself. I've got a list of people in my head who I plan to tell, and I know for sure my parents aren't on there. The thing is, I just don't know how they'll react. I think my mum might be OK about it, but I'm not sure about my dad. One thing I know for sure is that I'm not straight. Something which people get confused about is that it's a choice, it's not. I didn't choose to be gay, and honestly, if it was a choice, I would be straight because of the abuse we get for no apparent reason. But that's life. So much for little story…:p

Just to clarify, you're not stating that it's a disease or a problem to be gay, right?
Also, no one is truly straight, and no one is truly gay. There are better classification methods, ideally the
Kinsey scale. People may think they would never lust for the same sex, but everyone has had thoughts like that
at least once. It's human nature to be curious, but most won't act upon it obviously.
I might consider myself pansexual in some ways. I do currently have a girlfriend, but if I was friends with a male who I could get along with amazingly, was nice, and had a nice mind and personality, stuff might happen. *shrug*. It's best to not obsess over "is this gay or not", and just enjoy life.

The gay population is just as dumb as the straight population. I'm ok with homosexuals, a good friend in high school came out of the closet to me first because he knew I wouldn't care. He's now dating a hot Japanese girl now though…haha, gay guys get all the ladies.

Personally straight, as long as they don't come on to me I'm fine with it.
The ones that talk with that lisp can get annoying if they don't ever say anything intelligent. Other than that it doesn't bother me.
If they start trying to touch other areas or get intimate, that is way too far for me and will annoy me/cause me to shove them away. As long as we respect each others boundaries, all is well.

i agree with you there, most of the time you dont realise someone is gay until they tell you
i have 2 lesbians living opposite me, and if you were to see them in public or even in the house they look like they are just good friends, but nothing as close as they are, what they do in the bedroom, i have know idea, and i dont want to know… :p
what im trying to say is that most gays you wouldn't even know are gay, but the people who announce that they are gay and act all… "pussy-like" (let me know if im not allowed to say that), i believe should be separated because they give gays a bad name.

Omni - Attracted to anything.

Asexual - Lack of sexual attraction.

Becks, why do you deem sex so black and white? Really, everyone is a bit gay/a bit straight, so everyone could be deemed bisexual (besides maybe asexuals). And, little known fact, men typically prefer pornography including a man and a woman over a woman and a woman because they have something to relate to with the former scenario.
Also, sexuality isn't always about sex. Homosexuality just means you have a preference of your own sex over the other; it doesn't mean you prefer male or female genitalia over the other, necessarily..

Gayness seems to be the only thing out there that people WANT to be genetic.
Like if you are missing some toes, you want to tell people that you lost them in a freak Twister accident, not that you were born that way.
You just aren't going to be as successful propagating the species if you tell others that you have congenital birth defects. Others may be your friend, they may even try to adapt to your peculiarities, but most aren't going to be interested in a long term relationship.
Science has tried to prove that there is a genetic or developmental cause to gayness, but has repeatedly failed to do so. One of the most common scientific approaches is to take identical twins and follow them throughout their life. If one twin gets diabetes, the other is much more likely to get it than another random person from the population. But that doesn't work for gayness. A twin is no more likely to be gay than any other person, which argues against it being something genetic or something that occurred in the womb.
So the whole topic is a bit puzzling to me. People seem so interested in proving that they are genetically or developmentally defective, when the science says otherwise.

He is saying that people want being gay/bi/whatever to be a defect, so that they don't have the blame put on their own choices.
What I believe he saying is that science has proven that it's impossible to be genetics. I find it more likely that it's different people's interpretation of life based on their own life experiences that lead to Gay/Bi/Straight Preference.

Should gay marriage be allowed?
It's right and should stick around. Many military people are homophobic, and you do not want the number of friendly-fire incidents to rise up. In all seriousness, this is the main reason why. It's very dangerous on the battle field, and any other added risks like "oh man my squad leader is going to feel me up" will not help at all. It's for EVERYONE'S safety.
Gay marriage should be allowed, but I don't know why people would want it. Marriage is very religious in a lot of places. A better thing would be to make civil unions have the same rights/regards as marriage does, sans the religious aspects.

I agree very much with tara.
My biggest problem with calling this genetic means that it is a mutation. I really don't want that to be true, because then homosexuality would be ridiculed much more than it already is, which is stupid. Also, that's only the western world that thinks it's genetic/you're born with it.
In Saudi Arabia, I believe it is, when women are on their periods, men will sometimes have sex with other men, and it's not considered homosexual unless you're receiving. It's just sex. (I have no sawse for that, but I can try to get it, but the chances are slim (had the class a year ago).)
Also, there hasn't been any solid proof about homosexuality being caused by genetics or hormones during pregnancy or anything. The twin thing is very cool, and it is a very definitive test. A lot has been learned by twins (for example, not everything is controlled by our genes; our genes change function by turning certain sections on/off (basically) based on societal changes), and I would trust most tests relating to twins. It's the closest you can test humans with a clone as the control, really.
And, technically, it is an evolutionary "flaw." I don't like calling it that, but it is. Something somewhere in one's life had to have change their thought to make them who they are. E.g., I was talking to a friend of mine (gay) and I asked him when/why/how he knew he was gay. He said that when he was in elementary school, he saw a movie where two males kissed, and he thought that was right. Now I'm sure there were preceding events, which, in the case of them not existing, he would be straight, and I'm sure one of them was that he didn't like his dad and was trying to make him mad (he was probably abused as a child), or he didn't like his mom and so he didn't like women. Either way, nothing points to genes or anything. And back to the point, humans' evolutionary goal is to reproduce. But it's not just that black and white; "beautiful" people tend to have daughters more, wealthy/famous people tend to have sons more, and there are a few other things. Both of these are mind-boggling to me, and I'm sure there's some link between parents and homosexual offspring, but I do not believe it is genetic. And for whatever reason, homosexuals don't to pass on their DNA, which is very interesting to me (this is a very generic way to put it; I can phrase it specifically to anyone if they've any doubts).
To sum up my thoughts (I could talk for hours about this; I really do find it intriguing), homosexuality is technically a evolutionary "flaw," but I deny it to be genetic, as that would mean it is a mutation which would cause much more socially "acceptable" hate towards sexuality, and I believe it is just society acting on an individual, not (usually, there are exceptions) a sexuality determined at birth.
E: Brain, you're right by the way. Unless it was (hypothetically, of course; I don't believe it is genetic, but I'd like to bring this up) a codominant gene, where AA, Aa, and aa all produce different phenotypes.

All I know is that I didn't choose. It may be nature for me, or it may be nurture, but I guess I'll never know. I'm not trying to blame it on anything. If I'm meant to be like this, then I just have to get on with life, stop fighting it, and accept it.
I can see what everyone means by saying it's a defect, since the whole point of life is to reproduce, but there are 6 billion more people who can do that for me :p

3 - Straight guys think that just because some guys are gay/bi/whatever that we want to get on every guy we see. Not true. It's like saying straight people want to get on every girl they see.
Don't we? I'm straight, most of my friends are, and everytime a hot girl walks by, we tell each other how hard we'd like to f*ck her. Don't we all do that? lol <- read this with a bit of ..humor sense? We (my friends and I) talk like this because we know that we'll never stop any of those girls to talk to them, because all of us are in serious relationships with our girlfriends (please read this with love, english is not my main language so… if that didn't make a lot of sense, just ignore it).
Now back to topic, here in Argentina they approved gay marriage this year, and most of people (including me & friends) seem to be OK with that, they also have the right to marry anyone they love. A topic that is a bit more conflictive is the gay-couple adoption. I (and most of the people in my country) personally dont think that a child can grow up 'normally' with two dads or two moms, it might seem like i'm an animal with 'old-time-thoughts(?)' but that's what i think, i think that a boy rised up by two dads is more likely to be gay than a boy rised up by a men&women familly, and maybe that's not what he wants, he might 'naturally' like pussy, but as we all know we grow up inspired by our parents, so having gay parents would be like not letting him choose what he wants to be.
Again, i'm sorry if this had no sense, i just cant write that well in english. To round up, i'd say that maybe (and hopefully) they'll approve gay adoption, and in the future those happy gay famillies with straight children will change my mind, i'd love to think that gay adoption is OK but i just can't right now.
I just re-read the title, it didn't say anything about gay marriage/adoption lol, well i wrote that so i won't delete it, read it if you want :P
Something a bit more related to the topic, i have a few gay friends and that's okay, because they are not yelling that they are gay everywhere. It's like if I were somewhere screaming 'look how straight i am, i love pussy'. As some others stated before, its okay as long as they don't start talking wierd and all that stuff, that's annoying

IOW: If you're born 'gay', then how come the amount of gay people is growing, or at least steady? If anything, it should be declining since they don't get children.
Percentage of the population are gays, or just number of gays?
I'm not entirely gay, because, well you can guess why. But I can't rule out bisexuality, as I wouldn't really know. But meh, if I am then so be it, silly labels.
Also, does no-one think it's sexist that girls get a gender specific word for being gay, whilst guys have to be stuck with a unisex one?

I thought `gay' implied men, and homosexuality was for both?
On the topic of gay adoption, I think it should be perfectly fine. I see no difference between two happy parents of both male or female will make a difference in how a child grows up. If the parents love each other and support each other, I do not see ANY problem. I think they deserve the exact
same protocol for checking if they will be acceptable parents. After all, they are the same people, just with a different sexual orientation. :)
On a side note: my old manager at work is gay, and she is better with children than many straight people I know.
Gay = men
Lesbian = women
Homosexual = both
That's my view on it.

They
mean the same thing, in essence (ie. someone who is attracted to someone of the same sex), but are for the opposite genders :P.

If any two loving adults make good parents, wouldn't 3 or 4 loving adults make even BETTER parents?

and so we enter into the complicated and strange realm of poligamy.
My favorite cult is the obscure one where it's like 1 woman and her 10 male sex slaves… I can't remember the name of it. Google time

Interesting piece of information: polygamy benefits women more than men, while monogamy benefits men more than women.
But, about gay adoption, it depends on the couple. There are many more factors than just having homosexual parents, but I really don't want to go into all of that.

Agreed. I don't think you're born straight or gay, I think your sexuality preference is conditioned, much like your sense of right from wrong.
On a slightly different topic, I don't have a problem with gays, and I dont hate them. But the thought of them forcing people to stop hating gays is a bit fascist, is it not? I mean to put it in a metaphor, that is no different than me forcing you to like having feces on pizza even though you think it's weird and you're a hater for thinking that way.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, I don't think you should be condemned for liking or disliking what you want.
Am I wrong for thinking this?

I think it's more how you show it. I'm fine with people not liking gays. In fact, I kind of expect it in today's day and age, however sad that is. What I DON'T like is how people show it. I live in Utah, and if I were to come out, there's a chance I wouldn't make it home one day, simply because some people hate gays that much. Beyond that, I'd be called a fag or a homo all the time, basically just insulted and looked down upon because of it. Like I said, I don't think it's the fact people don't like gays (everyone has their opinion, obviously), I think it's how they show it.
As you said, you aren't going to force me to eat feces on pizza if I think it's weird, but I'm also not going to condemn you for it. I'll think it's weird, for sure, but I won't insult you every day about it, and I won't some day beat you up and/or kill you, whether intentionally or not.

Just because a guy is not interested in girls does not make him gay. I've dated so much and sick of all that love shit, so girls are the last thing on my mind. That does not make me gay or anyone else gay. Just a stereotype…
I think if 2 gay couples get married and adopt a kid, that kid has a pretty good chance to turn gay. A boy in elementary school who is afraid of sports and do the regular things that other males do, and instead hangs out with girls mostly, has a good chance to become gay or bi. Same thing with girls. (my opinion)

^ Actually, that usually only changes their linguistics. The male would be more likely to have the idea of a "best friend" (typically women get it, and then it rubs off on men (the idea, but the actual concept of having a best friend is never the same as it is to a women to a guy)), they would be better/use more small talk, and a few other things. But sexuality generally doesn't change from that. :)

Thankyou, that's exactly what I was thinking. There is certainly a line between having an opinion and just plane harassment/ bullying.

I don't think Utah is as intolerant as the stereotype. The University of Utah hires all faculty through the Office of Diversity, and the head guy there is an expert on LGBTWXYZ.
East High School in Salt Lake City was the front line for gay issues, with the Gay-Straight Alliance for some years.
I think the issue in Utah is that gay folks want to be treated the same. They don't just want tolerance, they want other people to approve of their lifestyle.
I think most people in Utah and elsewhere are willing to TOLERATE gays in the sense that they can't change your behavior anyway, so there's no use trying to make a stink about it. But when gays try to file lawsuits and overturn laws that are approved by an overwhelming majority of the rest of the population, a lot of people are naturally going to resist that.

I don't think his point was Utah, specifically, he was just giving an example in his life.
And I know that I live in what is considered a VERY progressive town, but people at my uni are still bullied for being gay. It was the same in highschool.
Just cus Connecticut lets gays get married doesn't mean you won't be harassed there

This.
Sure, the stereotype for Utah made it a great target, and I understand that there are many people here who would be willing to tolerate gays, but there are always the people who don't. They're everywhere. In Canada, where we're stereotyped for being the most polite, accepting people evar, I went to a school where a kid was literally kicked to death walking home from school by a group of kids because he was gay.
And I want to be treated the same as anyone else in the legal sense. If a law is limiting what I am allowed to do (ie. have at least a civil union with my partner) simply because I prefer men, of course I'd want that law changed, would I not?

People who think that gays should just lie low and deal with what they're given instead of fighting for more are
just as bad as people who think gays are abominations.
Also, a statistic to throw in here, 1/4 homeless teenagers are LGBT

I think it's interesting how many people voted in the poll. I've always found it quite fascinating that most males are arrogant about their normal (evolutionarily; I've nothing against homosexuality/bisexuality/asexuality/omnisexuality/horses), heterosexual lifestyle. It doesn't make much sense to me, but then again, I tend to think the human race is more advanced than it really is at times.
But really, nobody cares to say "I have five digits on each of my hands, and another five on each of my feet," which is essentially the same thing, however, when sexuality is involved, we tend to find a need in arrogance. I dunno. Kinda cool. Kinda sad.
