SRL activity drops to an all time low.

Seriously there are two people online right now, the only recent progress I've seen lately is reflection but not much is being done with the end result. What about simba, SRL 5, SRL Stats, GIT, SMART is becoming less user friendly (error screens), Script Manager, tutorials, randoms, progress seems to be at a stand still… or is it just me?

Something needs to be done, fast.

I've noticed that too </3
sigh… this community use to have hella traffic, idk what's going on, i guess it's these other bots that are out there :/
and like i remember every forum section had new threads/posts everyday but now i see less posting :(

This is the worst time for me to get active i got so many tests so much h/w its not funny, i might come on the forum daily i check it every hour, its one of the first tabs i open when im at home, waking up… But during Christmas i might start scripting again i got some script ideas, so like yeah :)

It seems powerbot is a lot easier for people to use so i guess people use power bot over SIMBA/SCAR

with all the leechers, we should make people need to regiester to read thread, its worked out well for lots of the other technology based forum that i've came through.

SRL 5 will be out pretty soon, actually. But I'll make a post about that in SRL Developers in a few days.

The same goes for the script manager and SRL Stats. As you can see 5 days ago Raymond finished a huge part of the script manager. Now what is left for the script manager is a pretty GUI. Perhaps someone can volunteer to make it?

As for SRL stats, http://sheeva.villavu.com/stats You can see it is quite complete except for a log in / log out feature.

View individual commits: http://sheeva.villavu.com/stats/commit/42
Alpha func. graphs: http://sheeva.villavu.com/stats/script/4/graph (script here http://sheeva.villavu.com/stats/script/4)

Not sure what is wrong with SMART or Simba atm? SMART is getting some more development love and Simba is stable for macroing activities so my attention went to SRL stats rather than Simba.

Plus, I think you underestimate the activity that MSI/Reflection/Simba has. Quite a lot of new users come to Villavu. But yeah, it could be more. I don't think that the vBulletin stats show a `new' low though.

I think people are going to RSBot and things like that because they're supported much more and have better random support.

Theres a few people that I know who I tried introducing to the community but they said:
  1. Not enough diversity in scripts
  2. RSBot has many more scripts
  3. Randoms are solved for the most part
  4. Tons of people active
That almost seems like the exact 4 things were missing.

Now I'm trying to solve reflection randoms because I know that it is possible to get them done with that method. That appears to be a huge deterrent for some people.
The script thing is also not the greatest, it seems like there are a limited about of scripts that do the job. If there is a plethora of scripts for people to use in the junior/open member scripts, people may end up being attracted to this place.

For example in the open script section: [green we have, orange float around, red we dont]
All in one fighters
Specific fighters for certain monsters
Universal miners
Specific miners
Cookers for specific areas
Universal anything cookers
Plenty of agility scripts
Many thieving scripts
Farming scripts
Summoning scripts
An array of hunter scripts
Runecrafter for the abyss
Runecrafter for everything else non-abyss
Tutorial island runners
Mining Guild [woot]
Fishing Guild
Alchers [though we have a ton of them around, none are super sophisticated]

There are much more but it's getting boring going back and forth between forums looking for matches/mismatches. In addition, for every one script we have, they have a ton… and then there are the paid scripts.

I personally think that we need to have good scripts up from that people are using, or else no one will come to this community.
I also think we should enable registration for downloading only [isn't it set up like this already though IIRC?]
Good scripts draw people in, and when people come here, they may desire to learn, but if we release SRL 5 and no new people are coming in… it won't help.
The only advantage here is that if less people visit this site, we get less attention from Jagex. Of course a closed system means as people leave, they won't be replaced.

Lastly, color is a bitch to learn. It took me 4 years on and off to master it, but with reflection I learned that in a few days. I personally would like to see reflection promotion, as noobs find it easier to learn. Then they can learn color… and if they don't, at least those 'noobs' at scripting will be putting out scripts and populating the script section.
I know some people who are old school/color elitists hate reflection (and I 100% understand their viewpoint as I was thinking about various scenarios the other day), but reflection isn't going to go out of date anytime soon AFAAK.

Suggestion
1) Why don't we create a script section like RSBot does? Not that I want to drive this place in an RSBot direction – though I'd like to borrow their good parts and leave the other junk behind. Another problem is "if we don't have enough scripts to do 'sectioning' of scripts… that alone should explain why activity here is dropping. Personally I have almost no use for most of the scripts there except the big heavy hitter scripts [which are heavy hitters for a reason]… maybe others have similar opinions? I don't know the answer to this question.

2) Is there a point of the members script section? When I got membership at this place, I was at the point where I could make pretty much everything in that list. It seems that to become a member, you pretty much have the ability to make anything you set your mind to. This therefore makes the members script section a diminished bonus rather than an active bonus.

Just curious, by end result do you mean that Reflection should be promoted since it's risen from the grave?

the difference is that SRL is not for leechers.

Maybe it should be a bit more geared towards leechers. Leecher -> contributing user -> scripter

But i think some changes in members would be necessary for us to keep our structure AND attract leechers. Members actually need to have something worth becoming members for.

Wizzup: If there's going to be an updated/outdated field, make sure we can check for the updated scripts. Atm on Nielsie's we can't. (not effectively)

I also think it'd be a lot more interesting if he scripts came in order as to whether they're updated or not. That'll make the newer scripts easier to find.

That'll make us ignore the outdated scripts.

That'll make sure that anyone who wants their script to be seen on stats will keep the script updated. :-)

I was thinking about this as well, I found over at the RSBot community, that leechers would leech scripts, and some of them would pull amazing stuff out their ass like a full working tutorial runner (which got me a huge army), but when it would break, the person admitted to everyone that they were a leecher and had minimal knowledge. The bonus from having tons of leechers, is some will want to create a script that they think is possible. With reflection, it would be easily possible for anyone to sit down and in a few days have the knowledge to make almost anything.

I do think gearing closer to leech-ability would help SRL progress. I only started with SRL because it was the first and easiest thing I could leech, it worked awesome so I wanted to make my own stuff, and progressed into here.

Also, 750000 GET.

Well to be honest SRL's activity has been dropping ever since Jan 2008 when Jagex removed unbalanced trade, before then activity was only increasing. Of course there have been fluctuations in the activity level but it has been generally declining. The past week there has been less and less users online at the same time, yesterday there was only 1 other person online other than myself, which is the lowest I've ever seen it and I've been around for a 4 nearly 5 years, hence the title of thread which is an attention grabber (somewhat true) and exaggerated in some ways but in some ways isn't.

Like always, SRL has things going on behind the scenes on every single level.. whether it be Staff, Developers, Seniors, Members, or even Juniors. So that adds to making it hard to judge whether or not declines in activity are from visible progress or actual deterioration.

Anyways, to elaborate more on my first post, I'll begin explaining what I think about reflection. There doesn't really need to be people promoting reflection, as it's not a product, that doesn't really make sense.. I'm sure everyone knows what reflection is or how to get it if they are interested. What I meant by saying 'not much being done with the end result' is that there really isn't a huge variety of reliable working reflection based scripts floating around like there used to be. Progress is being made with reflection (like I did say).

Simba is sorta still lacking some features that I'd like to have for various projects, FindWindowBySize =P I didn't know progress was being made on the script manager because. well…. no one said anything lol. I just assumed for the moment it was being pushed toward the bottom of the list of priorities.

SMART has some anti leecher friendly qualities, as in some new comers who try to use it often get frustrated because it gives them an error for no apparent reason when in fact it requires them to load runescape in a normal browser first and do things… basically any type of extra work that isn't exactly intuitively assumed.. better just to eliminate any extra steps for sake of simplicity.

SRL Stats have been down for quite some time now, it does seem like a behind the scenes project but it really isn't, its traceable to those who know how but then again for some reason it still hard to tell. Hopefully this will be done soon, because it's been in the works the longest of all things it seems.

I'm really not sure at all what is going on with SRL 5, the whole git thing I thought was going to be a huge improvement but it seems hasn't quite fitted in yet? not sure what to make of that one maybe its just a project waiting to reach a certain threshold before it really takes off, some more detailed guidelines on what is happening and how to contribute might prove to be helpful.

As for me, it's my first year in college and I'm fixing to take another round of tests soon, then thanksgiving break, then finals in a month… so my personal activity has dropped, and I'm sure everyone else's personal lives are becoming more busy this time of year. These types of periods are better for planning ahead than anything (hence this thread) discussions like these really help develop a time frame and big picture of things (at least for me)

I'd like to get some full length basics to advanced tutorials out (voice narrated/ camtasia screen recordings/ comprehensive/ etc etc) out on youtube sometime in the next 6 months.

I guess the main points I'm trying to get out of this thread are

It's a hectic time of year, but hectic times are usually followed by long needed breaks, good for activity, and now is a good time to prepare/plan.

It's hard to tell the scheme/time frame of things, right now (or at least before now) there was such a broadened sense of progress, but things are looking clearer.

Things are getting done. Just not as fast as I would like them to be.

The people who follow the Simba twitter probably knew about the script manager updates: http://twitter.com/simbadev :D

Also, I think Simba has been in development longer than SRL-Stats. But yeah, it should have been done by now. As you've found out yourself; attending college or university eats up a lot of time. Same thing happened to me, and I have two jobs as well…

I didn't know you were a supporter with git. I stopped asking people to start using git because quite frankly, I didn't think many people cared about it. Quite some tutorials on how to use git are out there (I wrote about three), it's just that no one really bothered to check it out.

I'm all in for making plans for the future. I hope to roll out srl-5 to developers soon (it will mainly feature some cleanups, new plans and documentation; nothing what you could expect from the srl-5 as it has been previously mentioned, that has been postponed in my mind anyway.)

Does villavu do any advertising on other sites? I mean, asides from the 1 thread made every other month in the SCAR section on sythe or the occasional reference to it on powerbot. SOME sort of advertising would definitely bring an influx of new members, although I understand that a site of this type is hard to find places to advertise on due to its nature, and that it only really spreads by word of mouth…

I could easily do this if/when SRL is leechable. No sense inviting people who will see "huh this isn't flawless, fuck it", and give SRL a bad name.

Yeah. Although I'm planning on quitting one of the jobs to make more time for myself / srl.
About reflection, perhaps it is in a idea to make scripts that use reflection for pretty much everything and see how tell they compare. If they work well then they can be good leecher-friendly scripts. I personally still don't plan on using reflection though, the only script that ever got me banned (my 86 miner) was my own Law Crafter that used Reflection. :p

I give a lot of presentations about Computer Science as a study at schools in The Netherlands, and I always tell I started out because I wanted to bot a game called ``RuneScape'', and I tell a bit on how the bot was made, etc. There's always a few guys who want the link to the srl website after the talk. :p But yeah, we could increase google ranking or such.

RSBot is not reliable, at all. The randoms work 50/50, and it has been full of bugs (so much so that it's been completely unusable for most linux users) ever since 2.*, and it's really hard to even find any information on what bugs they're aware of and what they're going to fix. Easiness is what attracts people to it, and it has a couple good script(er)s. People just want to be able to click a download button and click run with the least reading and/or learning involved.

Exactly!

That's where I think the Script Manager will help a lot. The user installs Simba, and BAM, there's a list of all the scripts to download. I've also had this idea for MSI: when installed, it adds the 'MSI' menu to Simba, you simply choose 'Run MSI' and the form pops up all ready to go. No opening certain scripts, no weird looking DeclarePlayers code to fill out. Just smooth and simple.

I remember i got into SRL cause of StarBlaster selling his powerchopper/miner in Sythe.org

so lets make a flawless script(such as MSI) with perfect everything, and attempt to get all randoms solved, and sell the script and all profit can be given to SRL and from there we can advertise professionally and LONG LIVE SRL <3

They're making money. Then a leecher comes a long and then is like "Hey, I can make money if I learn how to script", learns to script and releases a few scripts until his/her ability is completely pro, will forget about selling scripts (or maybe sell 1 or 2), we have another community contributor!
