From: EtherFreak
I am a college student, and I find RS to be a bit of a break from school work. I have found it rather annoying to play and watch tv, or talk to friends, ect. I found that scripting has become a bit of a hobby, and not a way to just leave my computer to do my dirty work. As observed in my scripts, I do not include anti random solvers, not because I don't know how, but rather because I do not approve of botting, while not at the computer. Others may disagree, but each person can have their point of view.

Please show us one (or multiple) of your scripts.
I am going to refer you to three of my public scripts that I have posted.
My potion maker

My longbow cutter
[url]http://villavu.com/forum/showthread.php?t=59042[/url]

My maple cutter
[url]http://villavu.com/forum/showthread.php?t=59770[/url]

I am working on creating my own procedures, so that I may become independent of the srl resources, (EDIT: If I become independent of SRL, I can actual contribute to the SRL reserves) but I also would like to actual contribute to the srl resources when I have procedures that are worthy.

Hello :)

Potionmaker: Too simple. Too little use of failsafes and checks
Longbow cutter: Looks like a copy of Potion maker but with a little tweaking to make it work with other items. Still too simple
Maple cutter: A tad more advanced, but still too simple.

I did notice that you don't approve botting, and are making 'utilities', as I like to call it, that you run and keep an eye on it, but as a SRL Member application, in my opinion, an applicant should try his/her hardest to make his/her script as advanced as possible with the most amount of options / possibilities possible and still be a working script.
That is the reason why I am voting No this time, but I might vote Yes next time if you're skills has improved :)

Here is some threads that might help you on the way :)

- http://villavu.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3293 (These 'standards' does apply to Simba too)

Good luck! :)

Okay,

When you last applied for members Here, did you even take any of their advice?

I can tell when it's your code because everything you made looks like this:
mousespeed:=(7+random(3));
wait(200);
findsymbol(x,y,'fish');
mmouse(x,(y-20),20,20);
wait(300+random(300));
getmousepos(x,y);
mouse(x,y,1,1,true);
wait(10000+random(3000));
There are no spaces or standards at all, and makes it almost impossible for me to read.

When you have code like this:
writeln('taking mini break');
wait(random(20000));
It is possible that the minibreaks will end up being 1 or even 0 milliseconds in length.

Also where did you get this code from:
   begin
if ( WaitUpTextMulti(['Mak', 'tions'], 200) ) then
Mouse(x,y,1,1,true)else
exit;

end;
It has some indentation so I assume you borrowed it from someone else? If so, source?

All of your stuff is big waits:
wait(500+random(1000));

Everything is a big wait, what if you lag out? Your script will get the player banned. You need to have scripts that detect when you're at stage x of y, not blindly hope that it works.

And SRL is useful so code like this
counter:=counter+1;
becomes
Inc(Counter);

Important question to you
Why would you like to become independent of SRL if you're trying to join our community? Just wondering. This question doesn't have a wrong or right answer, and IMO there is nothing wrong with making your own procedures… just why would you like to do that as you claim?
EDIT: There is nothing wrong with doing this after you become a member since some actually do that, but when you are applying to an SRL community you probably don't want to say that in your application ;)

To be honest, I don't even feel like continuing because not only am I sort of ill right now, but it seems as if you don't heed advice of what is given to you… which discourages me from continuing.

Honestly, if you want help, PM me or read the guides. I would be glad to help you learn the stuff you need to become members :)

I appreciate the slap in the face. I am trying to improve my coding ability, with no formal training. I thought that SRL members might allow me to improve my skills, but I can see now that if this is the response I get, that I may as well give up. (EDIT: NOT GIVING UP! Just expressing how I feel) I guess I should not post general use scripts as well. I was trying……….

Well if you're going to low-blow shot me in front of my friends, so be it, here comes my reasoning:

From: EtherFreak
I appreciate the slap in the face.

It wasn't a slap in the face. To be honest, if your ego is huge enough to consider it a slap in the face, then I utterly apologize.
You should discern constructive criticism and prevent it from being lumped into "hes attacking me verbally".

- No where did I say that you sucked
- No where did I say you can't code [Note: I said your standards are brutal on the eyes, but this isn't a factor in my application for coding ability]
- No where did I say you are incapable of becoming members
- I even offered to help you AND PM me for any help.

If you disagree with me post it. I'm not perfect either, I suck compared to the SRL developers. They can send my behind into orbit with their knowledge of coding versus mine. I admit, I was a bit annoyed that you completely ignored the advice of the people who tried to help you in the last thread, and I think if you did borrow other peoples code you need to source it. Otherwise it is plagiarism, no? If you "Clean room design" it, I personally 100% accept that since you have to understand the code to get it to work.

Nonetheless: I call it how it is. Sorry if your ego got hurt there. I did show I have intentions to help you… if you want it. If you view it as tough love, so be it. Unfortunately I'm a bit blunt in real life and it does translate over to internet stuff. If you don't like it, I'm sorry.

Question:
There is nothing wrong with improving your coding ability, BUT in your last thread you were given links and guidance on how to do so. Look at Zyt3x's post, it was really well done. Go read those tutorials. Go read. Go learn, if you aren't feigning that response for emotinonal sentiments then get started on them ;).
What about myself? I had no formal training really, around 4 years ago (probably less) I think I posted code that looked exactly like yours but was worse. We grow with time.

I thought that SRL members might allow me to improve my skills, but I can see now that if this is the response I get, that I may as well give up.

You're quitting because of what one guy said!?!? when there's like 50,000 total SRL members [albeit not all active]…

In my opinion, SRL members has to have standards. The SRL community [note I do not speak on behalf of anyone] wants to see that the coders have sufficient knowledge to become a member. This in my opinion is not sufficient knowledge. Some of the scripts people apply with are extremely well done. They have ATPA's, TPA's, DTMs, DDTMs, Reflection, standards and proper SRL usage among other things I can continue listing if you want. How can you compare to that? What can you do to compare and rise to those challenges? There is where your next task resides.

Most importantly: Doing the crying for attention thing like "Well I might as well give up" is not acceptable attitude. What do you do when life kicks you down? You get up and move on. I've had my balls metaphorically pounded by real life and there were times that I thought I was pretty much SOL. If I had that attitude, I wouldn't have the things in life that I have today. If ANYTHING, please for the love of all things green and good on this planet… never quit like you're claiming you want to [despite me personally thinking that was a shot at me for being tender over my analysis].

From: EtherFreak
I guess I should not post general use scripts as well. I was trying……….

Was this supposed to be some "well if you don't accept me, go screw yourselves" attitude? That's pretty low, I'm sad you'd even say that :(
If you want to become a member, guilt trips like this don't forebode well with members.

Yes we know you're trying, *no one* on these boards discourages you. If you read my post (you read all of it right?) then you'd have seen at the bottom that I'm willing to help you. Did you see that? Yes, I said (among other people) that I will help you learn what you need to master to become an SRL member.
I've been there, I've had people teach me.
I've been there, I've failed.
I've been there, I've written awesome scripts that fail.
All part of the cycle. I don't blame you for taking it seriously, as I did too when I attempted to join. Though at least go look through some guides as people have been recommending to you– to see what is required to become a member. That way you won't be further disappointed by the responses you get.

If, EtherFreak, you chose to skim over my posts and ignore what I have to say then I am the donkey for biting the bait. If not, then good luck.

Cstrike: I am sorry if you felt it a low blow. I just felt I had made a HUGE improvement in my skills since I last applied for membership (I can see why it was declined before). In the posts I made, there was constructive criticism, and I took it upon myself to improve based on it.

I am not intending to pull the "I am quitting or else", even if it was implied. I intend to continue to write code. Your second post came across consiterably nicer then the first for some reason, and I appreciate this.

To answer the questions that were asked:
When you last applied for members Here, did you even take any of their advice?

I went out and worked my way through tutorials, and worked on learning more.

It is possible that the minibreaks will end up being 1 or even 0 milliseconds in length.

I am aware of this, and felt that it was not an issue, for if it was a mini break of 1 ms, it would be the same as not taking a break, which would not cause an issue.

Also where did you get this code from:
Simba Code:

begin
if ( WaitUpTextMulti(['Mak', 'tions'], 200) ) then
Mouse(x,y,1,1,true)else
exit;

end;

It has some indentation so I assume you borrowed it from someone else? If so, source?

I do not think I borrowed this from someone else, I copy and paste from my other scripts a fair amount, and some of them are in better layout. I would feel that the layout is important to the script writer, and not user. If I was working on a joint project, or expected someone to find a break, it would be important to have good formatting. I am not stating this as an excuse, just the age old argument.

Everything is a big wait, what if you lag out? Your script will get the player banned. You need to have scripts that detect when you're at stage x of y, not blindly hope that it works.

I am still working on the stage x, and stage y part. I also understand that this is where fail safes are important, such as if then statements.

Why would you like to become independent of SRL if you're trying to join our community?

If i become independent of SRL, I can contribute to SRL procedures.

All very fair answers. Thank you : )

I don't understand this though:
If i become independent of SRL, I can contribute to SRL procedures.

What I see is that if you understand the absolute basics of the program, you can function on a basic level to develop them.
Though currently:
1) All the basic SRL functions have been developed, AFAIK there isn't much to develop unless you're interested in a gaussian mouse.
2) If you want to develop GMouse, you'd almost certainly have to use Mouse (x,y,rx,ry,bool); unless you can design a mouse that is better than the current one.
Most importantly:
3) SRL is designed to take complex tasks and make them simple for people like you and me. For example, Inc(x); is similar to x := x + 1;, what else (if any) could you develop that hasn't been developed? Of course you nor I can answer this question, it's more rhetorical and thought provoking.

BTW, since I'm a Reflection whore, you may want to check out coding for reflection. I have a huge and good bias towards people who use it properly. I made a full out guide for it, and it makes all the procedures much easier and more accurate (though color can be infinitely more accurate in other aspects). Of course Reflection is an easy way out because it is perfect, so be careful if you do go down that path because it can become a crutch.

Also if you want to get into members, here is a quick run down of what gets 50% yes / 50% no around here:

Need:
DDTMs or DTMs
TPAs
Some form of walking (DDTM or RadialWalk) backed up by symbol finding
Failsafes
WizzyPlugin functions (ATPA/TPA manipulation)
Array usage
Multiplayer
Antiban

If you have all of those (minus one, ideally all), and a script that is solid (meaning no excess useless text) around 450+ lines, chances of getting in based on what I've seen are around 50%, with weight towards being accepted.
I implore you to know *all* of them. People actually go through applications with a checklist JUST like that. If they find 2 or more missing they will probably click 'no'.

Remember, tons of guides. Learn those standards because some people will just vote no based on the sight of the code. If in doubt, after each bold word indent. This isn't always true but generally works.

And if you need help, me + others will assist you :)

Personally I think you're at a point where you know the engine, you're solid with how to make a script– I do not doubt that. I feel that if you learned the SRL core better it would make your application not only much more beautiful in terms of compactness, but would make failsafes so much more easier for you that your chances of getting in will shoot up dramatically.

GL

EDIT: And remember you don't need to make some advanced 1000+ line code with everything and the kitchen sink to get. When I applied, I had everything and the kitchen sink because I didn't want to get rejected on my first run, but that's just me. I'm generally an easy voter, and if you have TPA's used properly, multiplayer, antiban [etc], you will pretty much get a yes from me.

No!

Not because of your scripts, but your attitude. I think you are undeserving for that reason alone.

EDIT: How does becoming independent of the SRL Community/include allow you to make new procedures for SRL? Please explain your reasoning.

pyroryan

2010-11-05 19:45:54

I think individual, specifically unique, development fosters competition, which fosters innovation. I don't believe we should force people to completely rely on the include.
For the benefit of community, ease of maintenance, etc. it becomes easy to see why relying on the include would be beneficial.
As for not including anti-randoms support, I see no reason not to include them to show that you know how to do it. After all, the members are judging your knowledge and attitude.
Since this application isn't so clear-cut to me (main reason) and because I was not accepted into SRL Members by a script, I won't vote. Or at least I won't until I think I can make a good decision regarding your application.

Bad Boy JH

2010-11-05 22:34:22

lets just say if we only relied on the include, I wouldn't have made my smelting (and soon to be smithing also) script, cause all of that is broken.
I disagree with the neccessity of becoming independant of SRL to improve it, but I can see why you are doing it. perhaps try and improve it one section at a time, easier on you, easier for us to whack it into the includes, if its good enough..

Now that I truly understand what it is you are looking for in members, I will go out and improve in the areas needed, and reply when I feel that I have met these requirements. It may be a while, due to the fact that I am doing this as a hobby, and school takes priority.

Thank you for the constructive input.

I know this poll is old xD, but I just thought I should just post this real quick. You shouldn't practice scripting so you may become an SRL member. Its not ideal to look up to this rank as a must-achieve thing for all newcomers. Simply, you should script only so you can broaden your knowledge while enjoying what you do. Regardless of what others say, that to me has always stayed clear in my mind, its not about the rewards, its just about loving what you do. If you have that perseverance in anything that you do (especially this), then you shall go far beyond all others, even every single person on this site!

Look at this membership as a milestone for learning. Its by no means any huge success compared to all of the knowledge you learned. Its only a color, nothing fancy, nothing special. You can always achieve more then anyone by being a junior member or just being active and striving.

Please don't take anything to the heart from anyone on this site. This is really what they do, they take it very seriously when someone wants to make their big steps. They just want to make sure that your ready for this milestone.

I agree, it motivated me as well, but I didn't practice SRL just so I could become a member. What I see EtherF. doing is attempting to learn SIMBA/SCAR just so he can obtain membership and begin contributing. Contribution comes in time, but you don't need to become a member for that. You do need to set your priority on getting as good as you can though, without needing to worry about achieving membership.
