LimeWire down... for good, court rules

FILE-SHARING software company LimeWire was shut down overnight after a judge issued a permanent injunction ordering it to close its file-sharing programs.
Visitors to the LimeWire website were able to view only a message that read: "This is an official notice that LimeWire is under a court-ordered injunction to stop distributing and supporting its file-sharing software. Downloading or sharing copyrighted content without authorization is illegal."
The injunction, issued by U.S. District Judge Kimba Wood, is the latest development stemming from a copyright infringement suit filed in 2006 by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Created in 2000, LimeWire was a free peer-to-peer file sharing system for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and certain other operating systems.
At one point in its 10-year existence, the Limewire program was thought to have been downloaded to about one-third of all personal computers worldwide, according to digital music tracker Big Champagne.
On his blog, George Searle, the CEO of parent company, Lime Co., wrote: "As of today, we are required to stop distribution and support of LimeWire’s P2P file-sharing service as a result of a court-ordered injunction."
"At this time, we have no option but to cease further distribution and support of our software," he added.
Media reports have speculated that the site will reopen later this year as a copyright-friendly service.
Mr Searle said the company has plans to resurrect the site, but did not provide details.
"We remain deeply committed to working with the music industry and making the act of loving music more fulfilling for everyone – including artists, songwriters, publishers, labels, and of course music fans," he wrote.
"Our team of technologists and music enthusiasts are creating a completely new music service that puts you back at the center of your digital music experience."

Limewire calls home and says "you may not use anymore", and closes.
Also, Gnutella is decentralized. Pretty much impossible to shutdown. All they will manage to do is shutdown client operators. It's a losing battle.
I do find it somewhat humorous that Limewire hired such crap lawyers. I have no idea about EFF's policies, but I think they could have gotten them to defend them if they tried. A software author should never be responsible for the actions of its users, especially in such a case like P2P. Limewire was not hosting any illegal content, nor even peering any of it. Someone should try to use this precedent to get an injunction against Microsoft for selling Windows… many people use Windows for illegal activities. So what?…

I think this will drive Itunes sale up for the time being, and also isnt Thepiratebay having the same problems? (yay for being a member of a private torrenting site) i guess people that are not that computer literate will have to find a new way to get free music, movies, ect.

I love open source programs running distributed networking protocols that don't rely on any central server that could be shut down.Consider two arguments:
- People break the law with a perfectly legal program and the author of that program is sued and blamed for it?
- Can the government sue the auto industry for drug trafficking? Most drug trafficking is done with some type of vehicle, certainly the auto industry is to blame, right?
Aren't both arguments equivalent? If number 1 holds then shouldn't number 2?

Ahh, the limewire debate. Hollywood should just realize already that their business method is outdated and will never work in these times. It HAS BEEN PROVEN over and over and over again that offering your files for free download can still make you just as much money. (Trent Renzor and many others)
Limewire truelly wasn't great anyways. It was just the "popular software" used by all the "popular kids" thinking they were all the shit with computers because they used limewire. IMO good riddance, but they will flock somewhere else and I really hope it's not to something that is good.

People are just going to get more creative and learn more things about computers. Yes, now I will get to deal with more and more noobs getting viruses on their machines.
Personally, I never use limewire, so it doesn't affect me in that direct sense. TPB has gone out a few times, I am not sure how secure it is… for being illegal and all o.0

astraweb is one of the best newsgroup servers around, for $11 or ~£7 you can have unlimited downloads, no speed limit (it will go as fast as your internet will allow) and around 810 days of retention (as of writing this post). the retention is constantly rising

Even though this was posted a long time ago; I don't think that it is uncontrollable by man's laws. All it takes is ISP's (and Microsoft) to agree to filter whatever the government enforces on them. Do you think China is failing in blocking tons of sites and proxies? is it really that easy to get music off of there? is it just you like copy and paste a link or something into the program and it downloads it for you?
and how is it legally? you got the song for free didnt you?
Smartzkid
2010-11-17 14:39:36
Technically, it isn't illegal, because the music is being legally served to you through agreements the streaming services have with the record labels. What you do with the stream when it reaches your computer is irrelevant - most people push it right out to speakers, but there's nothing legally awry if you save them it to disk.
It works as a proxy; you visit your music streaming site in a specially configured browser, and it grabs the song streams as they are loaded. It includes firefox portable, but you could also install an extension such as quickproxy to use it in your main firefox installation.
It's nice because you have a few options: use grooveshark to get specific songs, use pandora to get entire genres, use slacker to get specific artists, etc.
In addition, Saver2 comes with a no-flash pandora player that does not require a browser to play music through. Another benefit: you can download more than one stream at a time. You would be surprised how quickly you can attain music when you're ripping from four services at once! And don't forget the pandora client's turbo mode - it rips each song as soon as it is fully buffered, and then it skips to the next song. Did I mention it also removes the pandora skip limit?

I'm not sure about Pandora, but I know Grooveshark users upload all of the music onto Grooveshark. Personally, I wouldn't want to download music from there because that system makes it hard to control quality.
Great idea for a nice service and allows you to build a repertoire of music very quickly. Great for listening to music when you do not have access to your library - otherwise I think I will stick to other sources.
As well, I have no idea what happens to songs that are added to these services. For all I know they could be re-encoded a second time.
