Do you believe in them? Why/Why not?

Wanted

Yes, the universe is to expansive not to yield life else where, to believe otherwise is naive.

Life is outside of Earth for sure.

"green human-like things" or what pop-culture thinks how they'd look like? Hell no.

that's still a possibility

but i don't think so, either.

I also think they exist the universe seems just too big for us to have it all by ourselves..

Yeah, there's no way life doesn't exist somewhere.

Yes. I can't believe that we are the only living beings in a universe of this size.

There must be life so where else how can only one planet have so much life and the rest be dead?

The Claw

2010-10-17 07:23:25

My thoughts exactly. :)
What about the alien encounters people talk about, crop circles and UFO sightings? Real or fake? Of course some would be faked, but overall, do you think they've reached us yet?

Troll

2010-10-17 07:32:15

Yeah i mean some of the alien images that DON'T look like humans where did the idea come from or is it real ?

Depending on your definition of alien, we've already found them. We have found bacteria (Which is alive) on some different planets in our galaxy.

According to the dictionary the term "alien" means

"A form of life assumed to exist outside the Earth or its atmosphere."

Bacteria from a different planet is outside of our atmosphere therefore and alien.

Now if you would consider that a alien that is up to you.

yes i would class that as a alien but i also belive there is life forums out there which are intelagent

Crop circles are fake. I do not believe a being of quite possibly higher intelligence would waste their time messing with humans. What would they gain from it? Nothing.

I don't know what to say about "UFO" sightings. I remember I was preparing a property my family owns to put up for sale, it was night and a few lights around the house were on. I was outside and I was staring up at the sky. For a few seconds there was a sphere of light in the sky, standing still. This sphere was not much bigger than the size of a quarter (From the point of view, of course). In the final seconds that it was making its appearance, it "Dashed" in a direction and disappeared immediately after.

What do we even know of so-called aliens? Very little. We do know that there are other planets in the galaxy (Beyond the Milky Way) that are very much alike Earth. Like the Goldilocks planet that was just recently found. So it is only of reasonable thinking that there are beings in the galaxy other than us.

So yes. I do believe in aliens.

Rich

I consider aliens to be like us - fair sized beings, who live in a community, not bacteria living under a rock.

I saw in a movie (so could be completely false) that there are at least 4 million (billion maybe?) plants in the universe capable of sustaining life.

Yes the universe is massive and there could be a chance of other living organisms but the supposed aliens sighting in Earth is all bullshit.

This brings up an interesting topic!
I know you said in white you're not serious ;) though I'd like to derail with my own fun topic:

Do we need to fear aliens?

1) They want us as slaves
- They can travel across the galaxy enough to invade us, means they probably have machinery that can do what humans can't. Plus we need to be constantly fed and chew up a lot of energy to maintain 37.5 oC

2) They want our materials/atoms from the planet
- They probably have many many other planets much bigger than earth to contend with that don't require killing everything. Even in our own solar system, we have supposedly 8 more planets (or 7 if you hate pluto) that have tons of unused molecules to tap into.

3) They want something inside of us that we can create (blood, plasma, liver… anything)
- As what would have to be an inferior species (aka: us), we're already on the verge of creating stem cells to do what they want. Therefore I'm pretty sure they'd not only have this technology, but have mastered it.

4) They want my cows
- See above

5) What if they're generally evil? What if they like destruction?
- Chances are they'd be like us then, a race that destroys their planet eventually to a point where it can't sustain them anymore… and therefore will never get into space.

6) They want to probe my ass and I don't care what you say!
- Maybe you have colon cancer

I agree that the chances of talking to 'aliens' are low, only because if they're here… then they don't want us dead AND they probably have the technology to be invisible and avoid our radars.

Brings up an interesting topic, in my mind.

Think about our life span. It has been billions of years for us to evolve from bacteria. To find bacteria that can exist in anaerobic places (just like the bacteria that started all life on Earth (or so we think.. Just putting this in here because I think it's cool that the "original" bacteria that we think was the first bacteria could've been the second or 35th for all we know.. I find that amazing.. everything would be different. :3) was) is quite amazing. Does this mean that all the life that branched from that bacteria is also anaerobic (most likely not), or is that the bacteria that is evolving and eventually could turn into intelligent life on another planet? If it was somehow the only new start of life ever (most likely not..), that is amazing. If we found where it came from, we could watch over the next few billion years (if Earth is still around) exactly how those organisms evolve. That would be unreal, really. :) That's exciting to me.

Kinda serious response by me: what if they're just trololololing us? Actually it is serious. Why do you assume that different life would be more mature than us in that sense? I'm sure if we were to find life, some people would fuck with them. I wouldn't be surprised if they fucked with us. Especially if they were around for our whole existence and could see how we worked and adapted to us. I'm just saying it's a possibility. :)

@OP, Until I see full on proof, I won't say for sure that there is. Sure, there is a very high chance, but still, think about how long and how low-chance and random it was that we have intelligent life here on Earth. It's outstanding that any life like us even exists, really.

I just believe a "Higher" life would not waste their time messing with us. They would gain nothing from it than just a few giggles or so. They could be spending their time doing something else or examining other lives on other planets. Or perhaps us, the humans are the aliens to them? It depends on how you see it.

So maybe they are just messing with us if those "Crop circles" are real. You'd think they wouldn't do it in such an easy to manipulate area anyway.
Maybe those "Crop circles" are actually some kind of secret data collection tool. /Slight laughter

I don't doubt that intelligent (maybe even superior in comparison to us) life exists in the Universe. I mean, our Milky Way galaxy is young compared to others that exist in the Universe and we've evolved this far within a couple of billion years. Think of a civilisation that has had double (or maybe triple) that time span.

From: Coh3n

Scientists estimate there are 100 million Earth-like planets in the Milky Way galaxy alone. It is just incredibly hard to spot them via current methods. For example, the wobble technique, would be pointless because Earth-like planets wouldn't be large enough to have a great effect on the star that is is orbiting, like gas giants.
