"The SHining",
"Blair witch",
and "Pranormal activity"
Both Paranomal-Activity and The Blair Witch Project are proof that gore, "screamers", extreme effects and a huge budget are not needed to scare you. 15,000 dollars to make a movie gets 193 million dollars in profit? I don't know about you but I would consider that pretty damn successful.

Except I don't think that people realize that nothing happened in PA.. I haven't seen PA2 because PA was so bad, but I might see it at some point just to see if it's decent or not.
Nothing happens at all in PA. It's just suspense and hype. Try watching it without any of the hype and you'll be like "uhh wat."
I'm not big on movies.

But that's the point of the movie. It works on the very premise of what fear is all about, "the unkown." Sure you see some sheets ruffle, hear a few sounds with lights turning on and off, but that's just it, you don't know what it can do, where it is, or what it looks like.
Your natural fear instinct will set off if you feel like something is following you that you are not familiar with (I.e. walking alone in the forest at night. Even the slightest crack of a branch will start to make you paranoid).

Are there any scary movies that aren't cheesy and not based around gore but rather something that will make you go "Okay, that made me feel quite uncomfortable"?
Anything specific? The more demonic the better (blood/gore is obviously okay, but if it's like Hostel or even Final Destination (concept was good but wasn't executed great IMO), forget it).

Without trying to sound redundant. I suggest watching the Blair Witch Project, 0% gore. I do think Paranormal Activity was scary, but that were quite a few plot holes in that story that created some major cheese. TBWP actually was 10% scripted, the rest was just improvised by the actors and some scenes were actually done without the actors' knowledge which resulted in actual scares…for the actors.

i like
gremlins :D
on a side note, the most resident evil was kind of dumb at the beginning and end, but the middle was very good. The part where the plain skids on all the zombies was freaking hilarious.

I'm surprised nobody's said anything about The Exorcist, but I suppose it's a bit old for most people here. I didn't think that was very scary either, though. :/
Oh, and Daedolon, that's a good point, and I understand that, but there isn't much "unknown" in it to me. There is a schizophrenic women who has a husband and some of her symptoms are exaggerated out of fear and confusion. Same thing goes for the Exorcist, which was explained by psychology; the kid was just messing around at first but he also had some sort of mental illness.
Really a scary movie for me has to have no logical explanation to be about "the unknown." 1408 is another movie which is basically all suspense and then it's just nothing at the end. >_> Just seems like a bit of a let down..
I dunno. I just would like to see a scary movie which really could never make sense but it happened somehow. That would be scary. :)
And Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield (yeah yeah it sucked whatever) were on the right track, in my opinion. PA was too much like all the "Haunting" shows on Discovery (the way it was filmed). But BWP and Cloverfield actually got my attention because it made me feel like I was actually recording it and I'd try to move slightly to see in a different direction and everything. It got my attention, which was good. Still, neither of them were very "scary," as they can be quite easily explained (well.. Cloverfield was kinda bad because it's obviously entirely fake.. BWP at least seemed plausible at first.. kinda. :p).

I forgot about those movies! I've been meaning to watch the Exorsist, and 1408 was awesome. I read the short story by King. But for some reason I liked the movie's ending much better (there were three endings to this story XD 2 from movie, one from novel.)
Also, BWP I like for what you said, you feel like you're there in the forest. That's what, made it so scary for me. That and those damn stick figures tied to the trees… *shivers*

The decent was insanely scary. I actually wouldn't even say I enjoyed it. Same with paranormal activity and insidious, both left me feeling gross.
However Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead, 28 days and 28 weeks were all awesome!

I hate the way The Descent ends… You're like "wooo she made it!!", then you're all "wtf?"
1408/Room 1408 (whatever the name is) was pretty genius
A Serbian Film is pretty gory.. though I wouldn't say its scary

The Strangers. Movie is all that scary but the idea of it is scary. Loosely based on the Keddie Cabin murders. Look it up then go sit in your secluded home by yourself and watch the movie ;)

The Strangers was a big one for me because it was one of the first scary movies that actually frightened me. I think what makes scary movies awesome is watching them with friends, and I think what happens while you watch the movie (i.e. friends' reactions while watching a scary movie) are what make scary movies great.
I saw Paranormal Activity 2 with a friend the first week it opened and it probably would have been much scarier although not as memorable if it wasn't for a bunch of "gangstas" in the front row who kept making incredibly hilarious stereotypical remarks after everything that happened. They unwittingly made the movie hilarious, and I think that's why that movie is one I remember the fondest.
My favorites:
28 Days/Weeks later
Let Me In
The Paranormal Activity series
Drag me to Hell
The Strangers
The exorcism
Quarantine
Insidious
The Scary Movies series
