They managed to steal all those items, including a 37" TV, and you did not hear or wake up at all?

Also, close the back door next time ;)

And I'm sorry to hear about it :(
So far everything bad has happened to you hasn't it? :/

yes!
we have already phoned them up and we are just waiting to see what they reply with.
We are ensured up to £50,000 with £100 excess
so if it goes through ok, we have to pay £100 and they will hopefully give us about £6,500

Damn that sucks :(
As others said, at least it was someone who could get in and get out without feeling the need to injure or kill the housemates. At least insurance + police going after them will help… though I heard police in the UK aren't great anymore.

So what's going to happen to your brother? Apparently if you leave a lock open… it can completely void your insurance, or at least what's what happened to my grandparents. The insurance company pins it on "owner stupidity". Not saying you or your family is stupid– thats how the insurance owners tag you to get out of paying you.

Rig shotguns above every door so when someone tries to come in it pulls the tigger and blasts them, great security system (like in SAW).

Seriously though, man that sucks. My girlfriend works in the insurance industry and the company that she works for would replace everything as long as you have a home owners insurance policy or w/e. No matter how it was stolen. I know I have my laptop and PS3 and some other electronics on a renters policy (since I rent) and it would be replaced under any circumstances (even if I break them [excludes wars]).

But like everyone else is saying, at least everyone is ok physically and you didn't have some sick minded freaks break in and make it a CSI situation.

Insurance pro-tip: claim 3 times as much as you lost, as they won't give you like 40 pounds per xbox game but more like 15 (as they are used and not new).

It's horrible to get robbed. It happened to someone in my family - they lost cash, jewellery, their car, and other bits which were worth something. They felt so unsafe there that they moved house.

Hope it all turns around for you Shut, and that you get back what's yours, and the scum gets put away. Saying that, since you're in England as well, they'll probably get out of prison (in which they had a nice TV, Xbox, and PC) in a couple of months for good behaviour. Pathetic.

Yea, or live in Idaho. My 80+ year old grandmother used to sleep with a shotgun. (there was a bear bothering her stuff and she wasn't too appreciative of that). Personally, I currently have a bat at the foot of my bed, and a katar at the top.

That sucks, and you are lucky (that nothing worse happened), but all I can think of is how those criminals must have had some balls to rob a house when they knew people were inside asleep. That seems like a real good way to get killed the legal way to me, you rob a house like that around here and you have a REAL good chance to leave on a stretcher or in a body bag weighing more than you did when you came in due to all the lead in your body. Where do you live anyway?

Wouldn't it be just as easy to install bars over your windows, and put a piece of lumber behind your door? I guess going through with all that stuff would give you other benefits, but securing your windows and doors would help a lot at much less then the cost.

You still can't use it to defend yourself or your home then. I sleep with all my guns near my bed, and a loaded pistol on my night-stand. I also have a concealed carry permit and carry a pistol almost everywhere I go, thankfully I've never had to use it and I hope I never do, but at least I have that option should I need to defend myself or my family.

you're fortunate to live in a town with relatively low crime rates, though. As am I, I live in Irvine, CA which a few years back had the 3rd lowest crimes rate in the US of a city with a population of over 85,000 people.

this is why you should always keep receipts, it's a good idea to invest in some kind of container (they make some specifically for receipts). Store all reciepts in there (usually orgainized by date). keep it safe! (if it gets stolen you're double screwed). then you're good to go when the claims adjuster tries to deduct all your worth.

I don't live in any fear at all, because I have the right to defend myself. In other countries where guns are illegal, criminals still have them and law-abiding citizens like myself are left defenseless.

I don't understand the last sentence, I'll use the gun any time I feel my life or my family's life is threatened. If someone breaks into my house I have every right to kill them.

I honestly disagree with that statement. I have never met one person living in the US that was seriously scared about being shot because of gun laws in America.
Your last sentence, would you feel sorry for the robber and not shoot him because he doesn't have a a gun–while he's strangling your siblings? Or simply let him run away with $20k in stuff, just because he doesn't have a gun?
You sound like a liberal.

Yes though, I agree that I most certainly would do what it took to protect my domain and the domain of those I care for. That just might include defending myself or family members in such a way that is appropriate towards a hostile intruder. Especially against a zombie.
