Making the ladder easier & more rewarding

Sir R. M8gic1an

I've been considering ways to make the rank ladder easier, and to make it more rewarding.

Here are a few ideas:

Idea 1

Some cups allow juniors to have access to member's forums. (to be put to vote @ members ? )
Promising Newcomer ( access @ all minus goodies & Apps )
Tester ( access @ all minus goodies & Apps)
Helper ( access @ News, Discussions, Help)
Useful Poster ( access @ News, Discussions)
Old Timers (access @ News, Discussions)

I guess we could also consider a few others for similar benefits.

On to other ideas to raise activity.

Idea 2
This is a scripting / autoing community.

My suggestion:
(month 1) Run scripting competitions for the skills that have few scripts
(month 2) Run Autoing competitions for the above skill

Idea 3
SRL Members suggesting cups for juniors.

This would work as SSRL's cup nominations works, but only Member -> Junior

Idea 4
Lowering SSRL standards & rejuvenating SSRL.

SSRL is pretty much dead. Clean up, set some objectives, (what is the point of having SSRL), and so on. Get everyone to 'do their job'. The current problem is we're not enough people being active enough to 'do our job'.

Idea 5
Linking SRL Stats with tester cup & proggie posting.

eg 250h on SRL Stats = tester cup (we'll need to consider all the possibilities on this)

(to consider)
- - How many progress reports were posted
- - How much feedback was given
- - How many different scripts were used
~ ~ How can we keep track of proggies
~ ~ How can we keep track of feedback
~ ~ How can we keep track of scripts used

Idea 6
Simba Dev Cup. To those who contribute extensions.

Idea 7
Cup Applications @ SRL Members.
The same way Jrs apply to members, I'd suggest Members applying for cups / promotions, with the threads showing up in SSRL

And so on. What do you guys think?

e: added poll & idea 7

1) I like this idea, it gives a good motivation to getting the cups, thus makes people learn to script at a higher ability, or contribute to the community etc.

2) I think that's a great idea, it'll cause people to start scripting if they haven't before (perhaps have different levels of competitions: beginner, moderate, experienced). If we have a larger number of competitions, it'll widen the variety and quantity of scripts available, so more people will desire to join. I think frequency of these competitions is important.

3) Great idea, would make members feel like they have more power, and compel juniors to either a) communicate with members, making them more likely to get positive votes and b) try harder in the community/scripting area to become a member.

4) I personally don't think lowering the requirements would be a good idea, perhaps raising the benefits of SSRL would be though? Once again causing people to take up scripting and be helpful around the community.

5) Not quite sure, more detail on this point?

6) Would be as good as having any other cup. Yes.

7) Would be no different to juniors applying to members, so I think it's a good idea. Limiting this, like we limit how often you should apply to members, would be useful though.

Some really good ideas, I like them :)

I like all the ideas.

We say that not many people have climbed the ranks lately, but I wouldn't blame it on the standards, but the lack of activity. I mean, there's what? 150-200 members active every day? How many of those actually post? How many of those contribute useful posts? How many of those even want to learn to script? Honestly, when you narrow it down I'd say there's about 10-20 active people that actually want to climb the ranks and make an impact on this community.

Yes, activity has increased, but that's mostly leechers. In the past 24 hours, there were over 2000 guests online, and less than 200 members. It's hard to keep a community running when there's so little people active in the first place.

E: This post may have belonged in the longer thread, but oh well.

I very much like your idea of beginner, intermediate and advanced competitions, rather than the way we currently have it.

For idea 4, what increased benefits would you suggest?

Also, on idea 5:

Proggys could be a part of the stats system where the scripter uploads the final proggy to the server, then for each user you can just "View all Proggys". Unless you were talking about proggy's posted, in which case there could be a section in the player's profile that holds proggys. Something could be added to the report tags with the option to "Add to profile reports" or something.

Feedback could be the same, but I doubt it would work that well.

The stats system now keeps track of which scripts the user has ran.

RM:

I'm guessing the knowledge of SSRL has become somewhat more global now? Is the knowledge of what benefits SSRL offers readily available? If not, we could make people more aware, then they'd know what they would gain from being more polite, a more advanced scripter etc. But in terms of new benefits, more control, far more like a moderator (didn't it used to be like that), as SSRL members are generally more mature, and have far better judgement.

I'm liking idea 5 now

The direction of having the SRL Member rank more open to Junior Members and opening up the SSRL rank to those that deserve it based on different standards than are in place now makes sense to me.

Ideas 1, 2, and 4 follow this. 5 and 6 look fine too. I don't think its necessary to have cups applied for or voted on by such a large group.

There is only one problem with this: the activity of the oldies wont, never has and will not increase. Apart from slight outbursts of scripting-while-having-time-off it rests entirely on the shoulders of the few active. And in everything you are about to engage…please keep the hierachical structure as it is. SSRL is imho just as dead as Dev's the inside forums… and they are all deviced for a reason.

IDEA 1: Yes please do. Grant them cups! I dont think you'd even have to ask for that. Fully trust your opinion. Like I said before….I use to do that every week, manually and secretly, without anybodies vote.

IDEA 2: This might dispose our weakness, when noone enters the competition. Like coh3n says, too little activity.

IDEA 3: Don't understand that. You mean SSRL pointing to possible cuppers?

IDEA 4: Point of SSRL? Plenty great guys around, not scripters, but welcome additions to the team. RAM comes to mind, for instance. SSRL isnt that big either btw. Maybe add more SSRL's? Everyone that is active now, see if they are SSRL worthy.

IDEA 5: Stats linked to forum? That would be truly awesome. They only mayor drawback, and the reason wizz is not gonna do that is the huge risk of having your forumname and password inside the scripts you release. That has to be solved first!

IDEA 6: Go for it! Also think about Guild please , while you are at it.

IDEA 7: Not sure if there is enough animosity.

Generally: good suggestions. I think apart from this things, the forums needs cleaning up, needs to be more transparant and help one click away.

@Richard:
The benefits are not that widely known nor officially posted anymore; However I do see possible benefits to making them better know. *Adds TO CONSIDER list*

@Town
Glad for the input

@Fawk
idea 1: Cups Granting access
You misunderstood this one. As for granting cups and so on - sure;
However, this is concerned with those that have received said cups gaining more view & post access.
–> eg There are people who were promoted to members without ever applying. This would go in the same direction, but particular cups allowing for particular access, and therefore making it easier to slip through the ranks and get people more involved. It would also help them use their 'abilities' further.

eg A good tester gets access to better scripts to test and provide feedback on.

What all this does is give the cups a further point, other than showing off and feeling rewarded.

Idea 2, Scripting & Autoing competitions being linked
'not enough activity'
Possible. But it might also generate more activity, turning a weakness into a strength.

Idea 3
SRL Members suggesting cups for juniors.

This would work as SSRL's cup nominations works, but only Member -> Junior

Idea 4
I'll add Admin view access to SSRL. I had no idea RAM didn't have access.

Idea 5, link Tester Cup & Stats
Coh3n suggested using the
tags for this. Maybe nielsie can give a hand with this?

Idea 6
I'll throw Wizzup a PM on this, better handled by him & Simba Devs I guess.
As for the Guild, I suspect we are waiting for the script manager?

Idea 7, Members applying for cups
'animosity'
Humph. Dunno what to do about this.

By Apps you mean SRL Member Apps? Why? I'm not sure that you'd want non-SRL Members who only know a piece of the pie as to what it means to be an SRL Member (depending on what they got their cup for) voting on potential SRL Members who might not have that particular area be their strength. IMO Apps should be restricted to full SRL Members. Other than that, though, I like it.

Idea 2
This is a scripting / autoing community.

My suggestion:
(month 1) Run scripting competitions for the skills that have few scripts

Excellent. Combine this with Idea 1 and have the Competition Winners cup grant extra privileges to those who win, providing an incentive to join the competitions.

Idea 3
SRL Members suggesting cups for juniors.

Sounds good.

Lowering SSRL standards & rejuvenating SSRL.

SSRL is pretty much dead. Clean up, set some objectives, (what is the point of having SSRL), and so on. Get everyone to 'do their job'. The current problem is we're not enough people being active enough to 'do our job'.

Not too sure about this – primarily the "lowering standards" part. I agree that SSRL is practically dead, but does it need to be all that active? All that is done here is pretty much a discussion every now and then along with cup promotions for SRL Members. Though, if you have something bigger in mind when you say "what is the point of having SSRL" and what our "job" is, then I guess it may be worth trying to get more active.

Idea 5

Going by hours on SRL Stats would be a mistake, because then people would load up on the best, most flawless script they could find and use it until they get the cup. I think feedback should be the most important criterion, followed by different scripts, then progress reports/hours used.

Idea 6
Simba Dev Cup. To those who contribute extensions.

Sure.

Idea 7
Cup Applications @ SRL Members.
The same way Jrs apply to members, I'd suggest Members applying for cups / promotions, with the threads showing up in SSRL

I don't like this. I would feel completely turned off from applying for a promotion, even more so a cup, for fear of coming off arrogant. I think a better idea would be to allow SRL Members to nominate their peers rather than themselves. As an added incentive, a cup could be created for the best nominators and, again working with Idea 1, the cup could grant access to the section where SSRL votes, since they have shown expertise in that area.

Sir R. M8gic1an

fixed

Promising Newcomer ( access @ all minus goodies & Apps )
Tester ( access @ all minus goodies & Apps)

What would you suggest that a competition winner gets? (a bit of red tape perhaps…)

Idea 4: will have to think further. SSRL is not too active as there is little to do other than cups. As is becoming obvious, whenever there is a thread such as this one there is feedback.

idea 5: Yes, criteria definitely needs to be well set

idea 7: Your idea sounds good. Will consider further.

Ah, though in that case that seems to be a bit too much. I would say Scripts for Testers and News/Discussions/Scripts for Promising Newcomers? Then again this is a whole new topic so putting it to a vote, as you said, makes sense.

Red tape

Hard to say… Bigger avatar (or avatar permissions for Jr.'s)? How about something like Sythe does to the usernames of select people:

To do what? Give cups? Why not have peers nominate for cups?

The Claw

How about Scripters cup gives access to SRL Members, Masters gives access to SSRL? Because the whole idea of SRL Members was to seperate people by scripting level, so we could say "Script until you make a good enough script, then you get a cup and you get promoted". Rather than the whole "prove yourself, apply, then we'll decide according to these ideas etc". That mentality increases seperation between SRL Members and Reg'd users.

And SSRL is dead too, nothing going on in here…and theres not much stuff that needs to be super highly restricted these days, so makes sense to give masters to super scripters and make them SSRL.

Not saying the current methods couldnt still exist in tandem, this is just some more ideas for Idea 1

Nava2

What about Master's gives read access to Dev's? And post access in R&D in Devs?

I kind of missed this thread, but let me post my opinion about a few things.

From what I can see, you are trying to increase activity and trying to get members motivated by lowering thresholds between ranks and giving some ranks more power. I can see why you're trying to do it, but I don't think it will help (for long). If you do it, you might get a temporary increase in activity/input, but it will fall back again eventually (just like what is happening with SSRL). The way I see it, it's pretty useless to do anything of the above (except for #5) and some might even have a negative result in the long run.

We must not lower the threshold to get more active members, we need more active members to get more active members. We need more leechers. More leechers will result in more script running, what should result in more feedback, what should result in more scripters, what should result in more members (there used to be ~3 applications a day).

Now, of course, we need to find a way to increase activity, but I don't think lowering thresholds and giving ranks more power is the answer. If a Junior Member has access to the member scripts, I don't think he'll start scripting sooner or start giving more feedback.

As the staff, we might miss a few occasions to give someone a cup, but if that person really deserves it, I think he/she will get it in the long run. It's a bit desperate to let members nominate juniors, in my opinion.. Basically, juniors are leechers/script runners, members are scripters, senior members are respected members.

The harder it is to climb up the ladder, the more rewarding it is.

Sir R. M8gic1an

2010-08-29 11:40:44

Fair enough; As to balance the point of appearing desperate:

People thrive on power, recognition, reputation, etc - this is what leads many people.
Giving these people a place to show their talents is giving them a place to pursue their goals. Giving people a new place is giving people the possibility of setting themselves up with a new goal.

Those who are 'the real deal' will always make it sooner or later. The others might need a push or two.

However your post does make me reconsider things such as cups granting access. It would affect the leecher / scripter barrier that SRL Members is. … However only to contributors (those who don't quite belong on either side of the fence)

My exact concern with all this. If the rewards are no longer rewarding, then what gives people incentive to push themselves to obtain them?

Sir R. M8gic1an

2010-08-29 22:16:07

Cups granting access actually sets the line of how hard a cup is to get.

Rather than asking yourself 'Is this post useful?' (vague) you can ask yourself 'Do I want this person in SRL Member Discussions?' (concrete) which then attributes a real value to the cup.

~RM

nielsie95

But will it make people push themselves (more)? Also, the decision is still subjective.
