Hey guys long time no see.

My friend wants to build a computer soon.
~$800 budget

He want to be able to run Starcraft2 on it's highest settings would be a guideline I guess you can go by.

500g hard drive or larger if budget allows for it.

Please put links to parts, name/specs of parts and prices in thread please.

Thanks

well you can take this as an example
a couple of years ago
i payed £100 for a AMD Athlon 2.3 GHz Dual core
with motherboard
and 2GB RAM

and £25 for a Nvidia GeForce 9600

that is more than the recomended and that cost £125
that was about 2 years ago so you can get more for the same price, i got my graphics card from ebay and i got my motherboard bundle off novatech

Just under 700$, didn't include a case or optical drive because I think your friend has both already, if not I would get this case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119137. Personally I don't use optical drives anymore, but they are 20$ max anyway.

Yea he has a computer already, but I think he'd like all new stuff, but he could definitely use the older optical drive (Does that mean CD/DVD Drive? How do you not use that anymore wtf?)

Thanks for the post, just how I wanted it!

bottleneck

A lessening of throughput. It often refers to networks that are overloaded, which is caused by the inability of the hardware and transmission lines to support the traffic. It can also refer to a mismatch inside the computer where slower-speed peripheral buses and devices prevent the CPU from being used to its fullest capacity.

Fermi

A unit of length equal to one femtometer (10-15 meter).

The fermi is the graphics card Capricorn linked to.
If you get a get a great gpu, you're going to need a cpu that can handle it.

The i3 530 is a champ.

Both the 460 and i3 530 overclock good. CPU bottlenecks are not really much of a problem. Whats bottlenecking most new hardware is bandwidth constraints.

Heres a good article where someone took a 5870 and ran it with

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0 GHz
AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4 GHz
Intel Core i7-920, 2.67 GHz

Note that those builds are without any OS, and I suppose your friend wants Windows so add 150$ to those build prices.

Also, typo in the title.

As in there's no reason to pay $150 for an OS that sucks. Or $150 for any OS at all..

I recently made this build.

Dvd Drive - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151176

Good luck! Be sure to shop around for coupon codes and such, not necessarily for these specific parts (The MSI video card can be replaced by some other company).

Well I'm not joking, I suppose he would want Windows since he can't build it himself apparently and asks YoHoJo to ask us.

The i3 530 and GTX 460 would be better at gaming.

I just pirated my Windows 7. I don't even bother activating it.

To bad your friend is buying a new computer now, ATI is doing a refresh on the 5000 series in a month and a half. Rumor is up to 33% improvement. Rumor though, of course ;).

Any more suggestions/critiques on previously posted ones?

He's just getting ideas/money ready right now, he isn't going to buld it RIGHT AWAY. He could probably wait a month and a half for one of those if needed.
