As I understand Java, its a brilliant tool for making games, correct me if I am wrong. For a school project we have to create a program, and I have decided to create an retro arcade with a handfull of different games (say 10), first of, I don't have to create all the games, I am planning on creating 1 or 2, things like frogger or asteroids, which I am hoping to create from scratch. Is this a too ambitious task for 5 weeks? considering I have a coulpe of weeks out for tests (so less work) and I would have to learn java?

If you're gonna learn either one, I'd say Flash. :)
You could do it in Java no problem if you are above an 8th grade education level :p

There are a few examples of Asteroid-esque games in Pascal that you could look at on here. It's pretty simple. You could try Pong or something as well.

Actionscript? well it is like flash.
Btw. are there simple game source codes for this? in flash, java, or actionscript?

Flash runs worse than Java, but it would be no stretch of reality to make a asteroids clone in like 1-3 hours in flash.

Its for my year 12 Software Design and Development project, its a program I have to make and hand in for marking, along with other bits and pieces (IPO Charts etc).
My programming knowlage is basically what we use, and a bit of python…and I have used some Visual Basic, but that isn't going to help here…

What programs do I need to write a flash game?
