Church to mark 9/11 by burning Qur'an

A FLORIDA church was yesterday promoting an event where it will burn copies of the Koran to mark the ninth anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the U.S.

In the announcement on its Facebook page, The Dove World Outreach Center of Gainesville, Florida, asked other religious groups to join in standing "against the evil of Islam. Islam is of the devil!"

The Facebook event has received more than 1,500 "Like" recommendations by users, but had also been attacked with a number of threatening messages posted on the page and corresponding anti-Islam rants.

The church's pastor, Terry Jones - who has written a book titled "Islam is of The Devil" and sells T-shirts bearing the same message - defended the controversial event.

"Islam and Sharia law was responsible for 9/11," Jones told Agence France-Presse.

"We will burn Korans because we think it's time for Christians, for churches, for politicians to stand up and say no; Islam and Sharia law is not welcome in the U.S.

"We've got many death threats from jihad groups, but we cannot react by fear and we cannot compromise our beliefs. Somebody must stand up."

The National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) called for the church to cancel the event, The Christian Post reported.

"It sounds like the proposed Koran burning is rooted in revenge," NAE president Leith Anderson said.

"Yet the Bible says that Christians should ‘make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.'"

Mainstream Muslim groups also denounced the move and lamented the sentiments promoted by the Gainesville church.

"Unfortunately in [Florida] and nationwide, Islamophobia are actually on the rise," Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) spokesman Ramsey Kilic told AFP.

"I'm more afraid of those who have anti-Muslim sentiments and may think this is a legitimate action and may want to attack a mosque or attack a Muslim on the street," he added.

However, Kilic said, "we are not taking any action to avoid this… we don't want to give attention to this, because that's what they want."

Besides the Koran burning ceremony, the Dove World Outreach Center also plans an anti-homosexual event August 2 outside Gainesville's City Hall. The "No Homo Mayor Protest" targets the city's first openly gay mayor, Craig Lowe.

Discuss…

Personally, I think this is going to start some sort of crusade and then as a response both parties will wipe out all countries with nukes on the eve of 21st December, 2012. :/

inb4 another religious discussion about islam and islamic extremists

Seriously, enough with the religious threads already? We've already got one or two other threads regarding religion going on at the moment. Atop that, it's not that long ago that several threads were closed because they kept getting off topic and generally causing alot of arguing and tension between people.

What is it really that you want us to discuss? Whether Islam will be the end of the world, or just the extremism of Islam in general?
What interests me even more, is to know what you believe will come out of this thread? Surely you cannot expect that Muslims won't stand up for their religion, and the Christians here won't stand of for theirs? I'm sorry, but I've just had it with religious threads here, for a vast number of reasons. If people strongly want to have constant religious discussions, they should rather seek religious forums.

I agree, the outcomes it always the same…

regarding this thread, I think its ridiculous that the people of this church does not see the massive similarities between the two religions… they can burn the Qu'ran but cant take a look inside and see what it says? it seems that they calling for attention with this anti-Islam bullshit and the "No Homo Mayor Protest"…just pathetic…

Christianity says that God allows humans to believe in whatever they wish. If these people were true Christians they wouldn't care and let them be.

Ye verily, for this, our Catholic faith, is the light and mirror of all civilization; from those Mohameds in the mighty Turk's domain and to those shoeless monks of Buddah in the Indies, none can compare to the slpendour and virtuosity of it.

As soon as people start burning books, make sure you get out of the country. Hitler did the same thing.

Where do you go if its a religion that permeates the world and not a single person doing this?

This is pretty old news, but yeah a little strange.

Don't know who allowed this. It is only going to bring more hatred between Americans and Muslims once it opens.

Typical of idiots to burn books instead of reading them.

Lol this is pretty funny.

So to burn a copy of the Koran, they must first be in possession of the Koran. Most people get books by buying them.

I don't know how it goes with religious texts, but wouldn't the money goto supporting the very religion they are trying to damage? Seems counter intuitive, but not surprised.

It's not about damageing the organization, they want to spread the hate. No matter how you look at it, this is just a big marketing operation for Christians Hating Muslims™

Hopefully something else than a god can unite us all* Remember that about half of SRL and the world in general are non-believers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_atheism

I dont know about half the world. It would not be wise to judge demographics of the world based on SRL, Whites would be a vast majority(Like easily 95%), Indians, Asians, and Blacks, would be a very small minority.

Also this thread is pointless in general, one incident does not condemn a teaching of a (typically) peaceful religion.

While I do not think that Islam is a "peaceful" religion, I have not read the Quar'an myself so I would not know that as a fact. What I do know is that there are (Maybe WERE) hundreds of thousands of followers of Islam willing to commit suicide and even worse, take others with them, because what they believed in told them to.

I would not go so far to say every Islamic person in the world is evil. I would say that some of them are, and those who are, are the greatest threat to peace today.

^ Couldn't agree more with the last bit. Just because some Islamic people have taken the wrong path, it doesn't mean that all Islamic people, and that we should hate them all and their religion.

There is corruption in every religion…just that today's media chooses to focus on a specific group.

That's true, sorry for generalizing. :)

Also, onto the religion of peace thing : Muhammad was, among other things, a warlord.

That's just ignorant tbh. Even if the person who crashed into the building was islam, single people do not represent the whole religion. There are tons of muslims against the violence in the koran.

Christianity is just as bad. Christianity(don't know the exact verse, I can find it if asked) says to chop the parts of your body off that cause you to sin. I believe Jesus said it directly, if your hand causes you to sin, chop it off, you are better off without it.
Jesus himself was a good person in history, but the catholic church with the making of the KJV and through translation of the original greek new testament, along with when they selected which bible books belonged in the bible, have degraded the true nature of what Jesus was trying to say. There is so much left out of the bible, much of which could have possible changed the entire nature of Christianity. As far as I am concerned, the catholic church has used the bible as a tool of manipulation ever since they selected the 'biblical canon'(which books would go in the bible and which don't) They did this by looking at them and determining if they were truly the "word of god". Meaning tons of information could have been left out that would change the entire basis religion.

Christanity is a very hypocritical religion, or at least the people in it, since 90% of them don't know 75% of what the bible says, because if they did, they wouldn't be christian.

No offense to anyone who is christian here.

Yakman

2010-08-11 10:51:35

^ simple solution then, get rid of islam AND christanity. :stirthepot:

On a more serious note thought, just because christianity does bad things doesn't make it okay for islam to do similar things. You're doing the logical fallecy of tu quoque

You could argue its the same shit, just a different book.

Im quite interested to know the Bible verse you are talking about. Granted I have not read the whole Bible, but I do know about theology, and I know that there are many things in the Bible that can be taken out of context.
