'They make you a "loan" and then take the first 63% of any dollar you make, get to automatically increase the size of the "loan" by simply adding in all sorts of crazy expenses (did the exec bring in pizza at the recording session? that gets added on), and then tries to get the loan repaid out of what meager pittance they've left for you. Oh, and after all of that, the record label still owns the copyrights.' The average musician on a major record deal 'gets' about $23 per $1,000 made… and that $23 still never gets paid because it has to go to 'recouping' the loan… even though the label is taking $630 out of that $1,000, and not counting it towards the advance.

I dont understand. They are good at accounting so they make the most money? Sounds like a solid plan to me.

World sucks, everyone wants their cut of something they didn't do.
That's why you should go to concerts instead of buy CDs.

Exactly why I don't buy CD's, if I ever meet any of the musicians in real life ill give them 12$ personally myself.

Garrett, do you think it's fair for them to make all of the money and the artists get none? Especially when they say that pirates (Internet pirates) starve the artists and steal money from the artists.

I think that if the artists sign up for it, then that's what should happen.

If they want to keep the money to themselves, market their own music. You don't need a label to get into iTunes, or if you hate all the other labels and such, create your own and get other artists interested.

It's not that simple.. It's not like it's cheap or easy to advertise and distribute your CDs (or music in general for that matter) or anything really without a label.

There's been a chart released recently, I can't be bothered to find it, but what it showed was that since the advent of music piracy, the artists have actually been making more and more money, and that it was the labels that were in financial trouble. The glitch comes from the fact that people spend more right now on concerts than they used to spend in CDs (which I find completely correct, if you want my 2 cents).

I have a budget of about 10$ per year for buying CDs, mainly local underground artists - but since last year, I've spent over 250$ in concerts catering to about 10-15 artists I liked.

It's not cheap or easy to be with a label if they take all your money ;)

Maybe a group of people should create a label that is actually honest and still makes money because lots of artists will go to you if you don't steal all their money. Competition never hurt anyone.

If your in a band and you sign to a label you just signed your life to that label until your contract is up.

If your dumb enough to do that, you don't deserve the money. I have witnessed first hand many band's get taken advantage of because they rush into a recording deal.

Cue Mau5trap records, Black Hole recording and all the little independent records that have sprouted all over the world recently.

Fun fact : when you sell songs on iTunes, they take 91 cents on the dollar.
