Build the cheapest computer you can!

Nava2

Rules:
  • Must still function.
  • Must be all new parts.
  • Totals must be in USD (I would rather CAD, but USD is more common)
  • Must be able to run an office suite (OO/MSO)
  • Must be able to run a desktop environment (X server etc.)

Simple rules.. go!

P.S. If you have any suggestions for rules, feel free to post 'em. :>

Including peripherals ? Like monitor, mouse, keyboard? What do you mean by new? As in sealed never been used before?

And just a general computer? It doesn't have to game?

I assume it doesn't need to game. And I don't think monitor/mouse/keyboard should count. Everyone SHOULD get the cheapest available, so it won't change the actual price (and it's not technically the computer, amirite?).

Case with 420W power supply: $29.99
80GB HDD: $35.99
AMD motherboard with integrated graphics: $39.99
AMD Sempron 2.7GHz (single core): $36.99
DVD-ROM: $16.99
2GB RAM: $37.99

Total: $197.94

I could probably save ~$20 on the RAM by going to 1GB, but I'd hardly consider that "functional."

80 or so pieces of rock/wood chip: $0

Voila! Abacus!

^ Technically those aren't "new." ;)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813153143&cm_re=atom-_-13-153-143-_-Product $75 Atom+Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811128057 $25 Case w/ PSU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146521 $16 Memory
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211468 $7 USB drive

Total price: $123 and 100% functional! You should be able to run some netbook OS on it, and if you sacrifice the USB drive for a cheap 2nd hand harddrive it's quite usable :) And yes I consider 1gb of RAM usable since I used 256mb for 5 years myself.

In case you want to boot of some real device (you should be able to boot from USB though):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822998003&cm_re=compact_flash_adapter-_-22-998-003-_-Product $7 CF to IDE
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820244071 $11 1gb CF card
Should run DSL just fine :)

Second-hand I could go way cheaper though with better performance, as an Atom isn't exactly the best.

bullzeye, your processor looks refurbished! Cheat0r!

Markus, I'd say having a flash drive as the primary HDD is.. not really worth it. Haha.

Refurbs aren't that bad… It's basically new.

I would try throwing one together but I have to leave for work in ten mins. :(

Should've added some hardware minumum requirements or some examples of apps it had to be able to run somewhat smoothly. "Working" doesn't really tell me much, I have 4+ computers consisting of parts made in the previous millenia, which all still would fit in this thread while being worth .. 10$/each, I assume.
Otherwise nice idea for a thread, I liek.

Newegg ftw. The rules are kinda blah, is there a point to this or just a sort of fun activity?

You can buy the individual parts from their site as well, it's the exact same price. That's why I listed the parts…

I don't think that really counts.. I was more going for towers.. :<

Also.. no one has yet included a screen.

Which is kind of essential to run a window manager ;)

VNC? SSH? X forwarding? Who needs a screen when you got a network :p
