Their products are mediocre, they treat their customers like dirt, they're a monopoly (check out how much music they own online..), and uhh.. I dunno. Other people care more about this subject. :p

I wouldn't say they treat their customers like dirt, I have called them and sent them emails and gone in store and they have always answered my problem quickly and promptly. There was even a time when I had a problem with iTunes and they were willing to spend the whole hour with me trying to sort the problem out, they even made people wait until my problem was sorted. I have taken headphones and cables in store and they have swapped them over without asking for a serial number to check the warranty.

So I dint think they treat their customers like dirt, or at least not me

They terrorize the market. They try to patent everything - most of which are not even their own inventions. They hold innovation back, they limit their customers in so many ways that it should be illegal, they treat other businesses like crap, their products are often overpriced and only a success because they somehow have a good imago and abuse this in their extreme marketing campaigns…

Their products actually aren't that good… iPod isn't too great; iPhone/iOS4 surely isn't that good compared to Android or Meamo in particular.

The only good thing is that they - in a way - fight Microsoft. (Doesn't microsoft own 51% of Apple anyway?)

you say their products are over priced, but if you think about it, they aren't

a mac would probably live much longer than a cheap pc with the same specs. and if you went with a high-end pc with the same specs it would probably cost the same as a mac.

ipod isn't great - if you think about it, it has changed the way people listen to music. you dont hear someone say "do you have so and so on your mp3 player", you hear "do you have so and so on your ipod"

iPod touch, iPhone and the iPad are great devices. they have much more apps in the market than any other platform. android may slowly be getting close, but how many of the apps in the android store is complete crap?

they bring great interactivity with the devices like no other device has before. they have even been classes ans gaming consoles. i dont see any other device that was ment for music and general use being classed as a gaming console.

they dont treat all businesses like crap, i'm sure you have heard of the recent foxconn incident. because of that Apple spent thousands of dollars investigating why the incident happened.

I don't see how it's changed the way people listen to music.. The first portable music player changed the way people listen to music. Walkmen then changed it more, and then "typical" mp3 players created storage. Kane Kramer was one of the first for DAPs, and then Audio Highway one-up'd him.

Terminology means nothing about usefulness/innovativeness/etc. That's just silly.

Apple has most definitely done a lot for technology and everything. That I can't deny. And I respect Jobs for being able to build up such a successful company. But I'm not impressed with the actual products.

Err?

Apple Mac Pro - 6 GB RAM - 2.26 GHz - 640 GB HDD = $3,006

I can build a PC system consisting of 8gb ram, 2x Hd 5850, Phemon x6 1tb HDD for less than $1000, which will blow away that Mac "Pro".

No, it is overpriced. Sorry to break it to you.

It's not about longevity, because Apple can not be said to be superior in this aspect. Apple products often break before other products. If you have had contrary experiences, well, if you look back on it I would bet you treated your equipment like a god. You shouldn't have to do this. (Value engineering/planned obsolescence: pick the cheapest thing that will work, and hope it breaks soon so they go buy another one.)

Apple is not cheaper, and this is not only because it does not succeed in longevity. I go to the local Apple store sometimes and open up a Safari (shitty browser, btw) window and go to some random build-a-computer site… I always create a better system that will last longer and will not require you to send in the whole goddamn thing if something breaks.

The iPad and iPod are not "great". Mp3 players existed before the iPod, Apple just relentlessly marketed their devices. iPods could, possibly, be considered "ok", but only because of their battery life and storage… even though the storage is horrendously overpriced.

The iPad/iTouches are JUST NOW getting multitasking operating systems, while other devices have had this for like… ever? Also, as a side consequence, the battery life is reduced by nearly half and everything tends to run slow. Wtf, much. (Some of this can be attributed to how you can program differently on a monotasking operating system, but still.)

Apple has not created any of what you say they have. All they did was make a touch screen and hooked a computer to it. People had been doing that before, although such devices were prohibitively expensive (and iTouch/iPad is still really expensive compared to other equipment, mainly the iPad. Might as well buy a laptop, I mean, really) due to the screens.

And yes, they do treat other businesses like crap. Foxconn is about the only case where they're actually doing something right, and this is only because it was in the news. Had they heard of it from elsewhere, they would not have given a fuck.

So, trust me. You don't want a Mac. Buy something cheaper and actually worth it.

EDIT: Apple isn't great. Considering their good and bad side, the bad side wins out. So… how do they keep selling stuff? It's called advertising.

How does this make it a good product? It only shows it is properly marketed. Lots of people using it doesn't make it good.

At the least the apps are allowed to BE in there. Apple has gone completely mad by limiting the amount of apps in the store, it's insane. They only allow apps that share their vision, and they still don't allow much video codecs, nor flash. Both Maemo and Android are much better when it comes to freedom, and I haven't had a single problem with any of the apps.

Your phone was released later than the first iPhone (and Nokia isn't the best company either). The iPhone/Ipod Touch still has one of the best touch screens I've seen so far. Apple makes great products, but they are indeed a bit pricey. By the way, the iPhone isn't the only phone with a dead-grip.

Yes, but mostly for new devices. Most of the time you can't easily update to a newer version. Nokia patents every new technology they develop too, as far as I know (they sued Apple not too long ago because of it). And personally, I have better experience with Apple's customer support than with Nokia's.

Oh, I don't know much about customer support. Nokia probably works with patents as well… (If they didn't they would be knocked out of the market because of the ongoing patent wars… It's the cold war all over, except now in patents.)

Didn't Apple drop the warranty on their hardware as well?

The only problem with Apple and patents is they try bullshit like patenting "a sliding motion used to unlock the screen of a device".

Apple's stuff is more than a "bit pricey". It is WAY overpriced. Sorry. And their touchscreens aren't "better". How can a screen be better? It displays pixels, and you touch it. Also, as previously mentioned, their screens draw about 30% more power.

Type of screen, TFT, AMOLED, OLED, LCD, etc.
Type of touch detection, resistive, capacitive.

Personally, I like capacitive more than resistive because I dont feel as if I'm squishing the phone. Many capacitive screens are very nice glass. All resistive screens have plastic on them which makes them feel cheap and have generally not a good user experience. That is completely user based though!

R0b0t1

2010-07-05 00:46:44

Well, yes, but phones are mostly phasing those out in favor of resistive because of the reasons you mentioned.

As far as I know, OLED still sucks and is not widely used so same goes for AMOLED, although they are certainly good directions to improve upon. Most devices use LCD, and there's really no reason to assume otherwise. A different type of screen would really be a "feature". TFT only applies to large device screens.

Of course it can be better, you can't generalize the screens like that.. I don't know which touch screens you have tried, but there is a difference between them. My experience with the iPhone and the iPod Touch is that they respond fast and accurate. I've seen a few phones, which also also had capacitive touch screens but didn't respond as good. It could be software, it could be hardware, but the difference was there.

No, capacitive is phasing out resistive, although its very slow.. Capacitive is exceptionally better than resistive.

AMOLED and OLED are very widely used among phone manufacturers. AMOLED, iirc, is made by Samsung and third party companies, example: HTC, use the screens in their phones.

TFT is used /now/ for larger devices because of cost, as they are LCD screens.

On the topic of screen, I have a junky LG Versa, the touchscreen works only through a fingernail, or it doesn't really know what you're trying to press. My friend has an iPhone, and the touchscreen is amazing compared to mine. The pressure sensor type thing is crazy good.

Of course, the above review may be a little too technical. Long story short, the difference is extremely noticeable.

Capacitive screens dont have 'pressure censors.' They have a layer of electricity that runs through and detects when a conductive object has touched the screen ;)

since they steal stuff like microsoft used to.. but now that we have more media & more awareness we see a lot of hate toward apple.. & theres no reason to not hate

I hope sony takes down part of itunes with their music store.. macs aren't bad machines at all, and OS X is a great OS.. they just charge too much.. prices shouldn't be above other pc's at all

I remember about 5 years ago when I worked in a laboratory that had exclusively Mac computers. I brought my own basic AMD dual core laptop with Windows XP to use instead. One day one of the senior people in the lab came up and wanted to see something, so I pulled it up on my laptop. I also browsed somewhere on the internet to show him something else. He was shocked how "blazingly fast" my laptop was compared to all the computers he had used around the lab and in his own office.

I could tell he was jealous, but he was stuck using the Macs he was accustomed to. I didn't have the heart to tell him that my basic laptop was probably 1/3 the price of his computer.

My point is that Mac-obsession is irrational. Since Macs started using Intel processors in the last several years, it has become slightly less irrational than it was 5 years ago, but still irrational nonetheless.

I bought a Dell, spent apprx 900$(it was a laptop, got a few deals) My dad got a laptop from work at about the same time. He got a mac book pro(around 2,200$) My laptop is significantly faster… :f:

I don't see how you can judge that your computer was significantly faster when yours has a different OS than that of the mac book pro? If they're not running OS's that have been compiled on the computers that you're testing, making a claim like that is completely irrational imo.

Sir, what you said makes no sense. Both OSX and WinXYZ have been compiled for x86 or x64.

But they function completely different. Load gentoo on to each, compile it, then run your tests.

Report back in 6 months to a year and tell us how these computers compare then.

I am not a big debater on this type of issue because I like some Apple products and dislike others.

I personally dislike the iPhone because I do think Android on a phone is much better.

I own a Macbook Pro and before obviously was a PC person. My Macbook pro is almost a year old now and still runs just as fast as the day I bought it. I have never had another laptop that has ever lasted this long, speed wise. I like the UI that mac osx, along with their touchpad and the options that come with it. AFAIK, no other computer has as great of a touchpad with so many options for it.

I recently bought an iPad 2 also but that was mainly for specific reasons for certain things that I have coming up in the near future. I do enjoy having this product around though, for more than just entertainment use.

I don't see why so many people hate on Apple, like others have said, I have never had a bad experience with them and I have had bad experience with other computer companies (DELL in particular, HP has been good).

Are they overpriced, maybe. But imo it's worth the extra money. I see people using Macs that are years old because they simply don't need to be replaced yet since they still run good. Are they outdated software/hardware wise, yes possibly but they still run good. I don't see any PCs from years ago that still run well, if run at all. I know my experience is that any PC usually takes a turn for the worse after roughly a year (happens to almost everyone I know, not exaggerating, even happens at work). So in the long run, if you want to have a computer that still has good speed and operates nicely, you will probably end up spending less having a mac.

Also, most people here are people who use their Desktops at home and saying that Mac/Apple products are shit. Being in college and leaving for class @ 8am and being on campus and in classes until 9pm somedays having a Mac is extremely useful. I have 3 classes back-to-back-to-back (total of 6 hours) and my Mac lasts through all of them being able to takes notes, record the lectures and browse the internet when I want. I know this is battery life (which people have already said is better) but for the use that I use it for, $600-700 is well worth it.

I disagree about them lasting longer. I have a Dell XPS M1530 which came out a little bit ago, and it's running just as it did when I first got it. It was a bit pricy, from what my mom told me (she bought it for me without me knowing because she had like.. reward points from a previous purchase so that took a lot of money off or something I guess), and probably more than the hardware is worth. But it is a laptop, so I expect some higher prices to get everything working in such a small area.

The problem with Dell/HP laptops and desktops not lasting isn't Dell/HPs fault, in my opinion, at all. I'm sure my laptop will still last me for years. But that's because I don't just run winblows all the time. That is one plus to apple (that they have a better system than nt with xnu, afaik), but it still doesn't make them proper for the type of community we are (a learning/programming community).

To the people that say apple just sucks no matter what, I disagree. I don't think winblows sucks no matter what, either. In my opinion, apple products (computer-wise) are fine for people who want something that will last longer out of the box than a dell/hp that will be running windows, which is pretty much a set up for failure in the long run. And I think windows products are fine for the average user who doesn't care to know anything about computers and is fine with something that "works."

Thinking about it I still don't know why people use Apple computers, other than hipsters.

And GNU/Linux is just good for anyone who wants there computer to work in the next 100 years. ;)

So, I don't think there's anything wrong with Dell/HP. I really don't see any reason for people to use Apple computers (iPhones and iPods definitely have their market, and I think tablets are stupid in general). But I do think everyone should use GNU/Linux. :3

Well I don't think just because some people are prone to shitting up their Windows doesn't mean that all Windows based laptops are slow after a year. People have 10 year old thinkpads that are running Windows XP.

My laptop gets almost 5 hours of H.264 playback. Six to seven hours on the internet depending on what sites I look up(and my battery is only a six cell 55 Wh, so Apple can probably fit a bigger battery in). So Apple are definitely not the only people who can get good battery life out of their hardware. When you look past the shit that some companies shovel in your face you can find a lot of capable hardware. But most people don't care about researching their purchase. Most people don't look after their shit after they've bought it. How many people do you think even change the oil in their car?

I'm not trying to defend Windows here, because fuck windows. But you have to realize when you buy hardware, it doesn't automagically become slower as it ages. You can like Apple as much as you like, but there are other laptops that compete with their laptops and often beat them if you consider price.

You can prefer Apple's laptops for their trackpads and Mac OS UI if you want, but I personally wouldn't let decide my purchase for me. I really like that they have a 13 inch one though. I wish more companies made laptops that size.

PC Laptops last just as long, My family bought two 400 dollar laptops like two and a half years ago, both are running just fine. Macbook Pros do have nice battery power though. Personally I hate both operating systems, I can stand windows xp, but I prefer linux :)

If you had a product.. the same as other products.. but you wanted your product to sell..
Would you try to make it look cool or something?.. to attract more customers…

It happened here with scar changing to simba.. Much cleaner platform.. and easier to use.
To attract more people to the site?..

If i owned a business.. I would do everything to try and make my product look 'better' then the rest..
and then when my sales started shooting up and my image was out there.
id put the price up.

It's how you become rich..
can you blame apple?

Also. Apple have amazing customer service. I've personally never had a problem.

I was a scroll wheel in a past life.

First of all, SCAR -> Simba wasn't for aesthetics. The general look and feel is about the same. The updates weren't for trivial aesthetic purposes, unless I've been mistaken for ages. Simba was made to be an open source alternative to SCAR.

But regardless, the problem a lot of actual tech people who aren't just hipster kids who think computers are still underground is that Apple focuses on looks more than performance. It's awful for the tech industry. If I'm going to be developing software that will be ran on almost every computer every day, I don't want to waste my money on a "sleek" design that turns my performance into shit, completely stops hardware upgrades, and makes me look like an asshole. I want something that will do what I need it to do as best as I can for the best price I can get it at. I don't care if it's mounted on a dead elephant and smells horrid. I'm using it for it to work how I want it to, and to give me the tools I need for anything.

Which is why Linux > Windows >= Mac OS. Windows >= Mac OS only because of the market percentage, really. Close call.
