Apple sued.

"Apple has been accused of violation of the Federal Communications Act, three counts of products liability related to negligence, defect in design and breach of implied warranty, intentional and negligent misrepresentation, fraud by concealment, unfair business practices and more. 'The iPhone 4 manifests design and manufacturing defects that were known to Defendants before it was released which were not disclosed to consumers, namely, a connection problem caused by the iPhone 4's antenna configuration that makes it difficult or impossible to maintain a connection to AT&T's network,' the California complaint reads."

For how much the iPhone 4 costs, the price of a case to make it better is not that big of a deal. However, for how much the iPhone 4 costs no one should have to buy a case or hold it funny to make it work properly.

I am sorry, they may be neat, but I think they were pushed out too soon, are over priced and generally not worth it.

On the topic of the being sued. That is ridiculous. If everyone in my home town sued when their phone got bad connection or didn't work, there would be hundreds of lawsuits daily for a very long time.

All my ipods get that jack thing fucked up and you have to position the headphones jack all weird and shit and its really delicate and it gets my goat if you know what I mean

i luffs yeww

2010-07-01 22:25:39

^ That's most likely due to a broken jack or your headphones don't work. It happens to all products, but they're not made like that.

anonymity, the reason this is a valid legal case is because Apple was well aware of the problem, yet didn't inform consumers. For Apple to tell users they have to buy a case for their by-default faulty phone is against the law, as the contract/terms of service/whatever doesn't say that a case needs to be bought to not have the problem arise.

AT&T is also involved, as they, apparently, helped design the antenna system, knowing that there would be problems with service.

On a better note, Verizon will be providing service to iPhone(/iPad?) users next year. :) (Not that Verizon is any better (well, it may be, I'm not sure; I have T-Mobile (which I've never had a problem with ;))), but having the option to have shit-tier AT&T or mid-tier (apparently) Verizon is great.)

^ my experience, and those of MANY friends of mine has been that if you are in the middle of no where, if verizon does not get service, then at&t definitly wont. this has mainly been tested in the central valley of california (in the country) and in yosemite (the whole seirras for that matter). and some of my friends have t-mobile - dont plan on getting service if u ever go to the mountains here in cali :P

if ur in a town though, it doesnt matter what service you have IMO.

Android users will surpass iOS within a year or two.

Verizon!!
The only place I haven't gotten reception is Barrow, Alaska. Okay, that's a bit of an exaggeration - there are some dead spots up in northern Minnesota..

Except if I was buying a 600$ phone I expect it to work properly. Also the iPhone 4 looks really nice, I wouldn't want to cover that up with a case.

And if your phone literally doesn't work because of poor wireless down by your provider, maybe you SHOULD sue.

As far as I know, the Apple iPhone, or at least those that have already been produced, will only be available on AT&T. The iPhone capable of being used by Verizon customers will be a separate device.

Actually no, what Apple did was make the bars follow a illogical pattern for signal strength. They did this to make it look like you had better signal strength at times then you really did.

And no, software can not fix the problem of you physically bridging the two antennae. I don't know what makes you think that.

And about Verizon, I think I heard that the iPhone 4 will be available on Verizon, but I'm not sure. Even if it was a different version, it would be much better than the iPhone 4; the design would definitely be fixed, the service would be better, and I'm sure other things will change.

Lollololol Flash is a joke, Jobs is not stupid for not putting flash on his devices.

And if flash is so important, explain why Apple sold millions of ipod touches, iphones, and ipads…

I'm pretty sure it would be cheaper to pay the early termination fee and switch to AT&T for the iPhone than to buy it for $600 + monthly payments.

Funny, because the EU is hitting them with a bunch of fines for not putting flash on their devices. And god, can you try to avoid double negatives?

Apple doesn't sell products based on function. When you buy a iPhone, or a iPod, you buy a BRAND, not a product. Jobs could call a shit covered brick the iPhone 5 and I bet people would buy it just because its from Apple.

I am still of the opinion that if someone spent a bunch of money on the iphone, buying a case won't break their back. Also it would help increase its lifespan.

This is sort of related to the topic but really a different one. : They are out there, but minor. They are not a problem, but will be. I am waiting for it to happen, because I know it will. Viruses. I mean major viruses on phones. I am just curious if it will hit micro or mac phones first. As always, the micos would be easier to program. But then again seeing the macs get a virus would cause more of an uproar. When will this come?

Well we know that these devices are not secure, there have already been demonstrations of security problems in phones. I think once the first big virus hits mobile devices, it will be a large landslide from there.

The question then becomes, who will be better at handling the situation?

i luffs yeww

2010-07-03 15:56:20

The only thing is not many people store anything of importance on their phones. So for a widespread virus to happen, it would be for no point. And the only people who are smart enough to do something like this would be someone who does it for a point (usually).

Also, there are many different phones. Many different ways of them working, and the only way I think this could become a problem is if it was sent to every contact they had. To be honest, I'm sure that EVERY single phone would be infected by this if it were spread to all contacts. And I believe that would be difficult for the hacker to do.

Switching networks isn't very easy, you have to go waste lots of time to drop one and join another, not to mention you may have to pay more money, and some people have a personal obligation to stay with one network. Plus, I have AT&T and it isn't that good, except i have a 3gs so i can deal with it, but if I was on Verison with a DRoiD, I wouldn't switch. - 4G
- [Much] larger screen
- Free tethering, Google Voice, other apps that Apple refuses to allow (granted there may be some big apps on the App Store and not Android, though I find the two I mentioned a big deal for me, not to mention that most apps will eventually come to Android whereas Apple will never allow certain apps)
- Better carriers (US)
- Flash (I don't care if it's flawed, it's useful as it is right now, HTML5 isn't nearly as big yet)
- HDMI port
- Full-featured multi-tasking

vs…

- Better camera (that 5 MP camera does look better)
- Higher Screen res.
- Better battery life
- More [junk] apps
- Better usability (non-issue unless you have issues with using technology)

No contest. Also notice the key words: "better", "higher", "more". The iPhone simply doesn't have many of the things Android (in this case, the Evo) has, and only improves on a select few (and Android beats it in nearly as many).

And the Iphone 5, is gonna have a 12 mp camera, and everyone else will have 10. I got some insider info….

1) There is absolutely no way any of that will happen
2) As stated above, MP means nothing

Edit: On the antenna thing..

Their bars explanation doesn't make sense. People aren't complaining only about the visual aspect (less bars), they're dropping calls as soon as they death grip their phone. Apple is just buying some time till they can figure out a way to get this over with smoothly without creating an uproar.

How do you know every one else is going to have? I can see phones with Cameras higher than 10MP before the end of the year, expecially before iphone5 comes out /next year/
How is the Evo the only competitor? How is it not good enough?
Look at the Samsung Galaxy S. It has a humming bird gpu. Producing way more polygons a second than an Iphone could have ever dreamed of. The iphone4 screen is better than a Super AMOLED screenby 5%, but uses 35% more power.

Maybe I'm just an Ebay noob, but a quick search garnered no results for a battery well over 1750mAh for less than $50 (only 1500mAh's, but I'm not a fan of carrying around several batteries). And if there were, I doubt I'd feel comfortable buying from some unknown shop in China.

If there was something that presented a major security flaw, there would be information to get from many many phones.

I find Maemo / Meego better than Android. Obviously the Nokia n900 now lacks behind in hardware support, but it's actually quite old already as well… (10 months or so?)
Maemo / Meego is a full Linux system, whereas Android shares a lot less with the common GNU architectures, and doesn't have all the GNU utils I'd like to have. (AFAIK anyway)
For Maemo, I could simply cross compile Simba to ARM and it just ``worked'' on my phone, as I have demonstrated. This is why I think Maemo is better. Obviously Android may have more mature apps fit for phones, but Maemo also includes a lot of applications that normal Linux distros have; ones you would not expect on phones. (Aircrack, wireshark, nmap, sshd for remote login, lighttpd, Xterminal, vim)
It also gives you root access. Heck, it even has a complete chroot environment with desktop environment for apps like OpenOffice. o_O

FYI: I see how it may not be suited for the everyday Joe the Plumber, but it's by far the best phone for me.

It also gives you root access. Heck, it even has a complete chroot environment with desktop environment for apps like OpenOffice. o_O

FYI: I see how it may not be suited for the everyday Joe the Plumber, but it's by far the best phone for me.

Yea I can see where that'd benefit, the producers of a lot of phones do not like people doing whatever they want with it easily.

More importantly how much of a klutz do you have to be to fall into a creek …

Really not a kutlz at all, I (we) were running through a forest I wasn't to familiar with, it turns out they had recently cut back several feet of brush and trees before it making it impossible to see at night. Of course when your hauln all it takes is one step off to the side in the dark and the next thing you know you are falling.

What makes it better than a droid x? I can't find anything about this phone in particular. Recording 720p with an 8mb camera is hard to beat, so is the open source android OS.

Keep in mind it's not always about the MP, but often the compression algorithm the phone uses to compress the pictures and videos the user takes.

What is this supposed to mean? The videos are kept in pure format and are not compressed at all unless you try sending them through a text message, you could upload them straight to youtube as 720p

Just got my Evo :D Got on the local Sprint store's waiting list 2 days ago, rep called this morning, came in during the afternoon to pick it up.

Well, the Evo has 720p with an 8.0MP camera as well, and the video is pretty bad. I've only tried it inside in semi-dim light though, so maybe that's its weak spot (or maybe I screwed up the settings - only thing I changed was the camera quality from VGA to 720p, maybe there's some other un-optimized setting). Looking at an iPhone 4's test, iPhone wins pretty easily in that respect. The camera takes excellent pictures, hard to compare that though.

You're comparing a video in dim light (8mp) to one in good setting of lesser mp (5mp), I'd say that would be the sole reason.

I highly doubt that the video isn't compressed. There's no way the SD card would be able to write at a high enough speed for that.

I don't think that's the sole reason. The framerate and general quality of any video I've shot on my EVO really sucks. It stutters and blurs constantly. Since the EVO's camera is from the same company as the iPhone's (AFAIK), just with more megapixels, I think much of the problem is in the software.
Obviously a 5mp camera will shoot better video in a dim setting, but the difference in the video quality of the two phones really is huge…

If you're talking to me (I think you are, though I never said anything about the Droid X), I'm not an iPhone fanboy; I have never used an iPhone, nor would I ever own one. However, video is better on the iPhone than on the EVO, whether you choose to believe it or not. But like I said, I believe this is mostly a software/driver issue.

1) There is a small if not any difference between Droid X's camera and the HTC Evolution.
2) I find it funny your opinion is based off of irrelevant, easily tampered, easily disproved data on youtube. Even though I believe the videos are very similar the HTC's possibly even better on a binary level and visually depending on different tastes and not facts.
3) Lastly, I don't think there is a driver/software issue as that sounds ridiculous the fact of the matter is apple cares about their money and not customer satisfaction (unless there's money involved in that to) so having a slightly less expensive camera on millions of phones for people to debate if it's as good as an 8mb is something Steve Jobs would never do, right?

oh, and I'm not always talking to you directly ;)

1. Yes, I think it is the same camera. I have not seen what the video on the Droid X looks like though.
2. My opinion is based on many different factors. I own an EVO, so I can see for myself what kind of video it takes; I have been following all of the camera/video discussion at XDA; there are many different EVO and iPhone 4 video samples from many different sources, and every time I find the iPhone to be much better. I understand that people have different tastes, but the iPhone just is better at capturing video in low light.
3. I thought it was ridiculous at first also, but there is a lot of evidence that points to it being mostly a software issue. First, HTC recently released an update that slightly improves the camera in low light, proving that it is/was not performing at its full potential. Second, it is proven by the source code that HTC compresses the hell out of the video, much more than they need to. Third, I compared HTC's camera (normal picture) app to many third-party ones, and the difference in quality is amazing. Pictures taken in low light with HTC's app are almost unrecognizable, while pictures taken in the exact same setting/position with "vignette" look great. This again proves that HTC is not using the camera at its full potential.
