Finland has become the first country in the world to make broadband a legal right for every citizen.
From 1 July every Finn will have the right to access to a 1Mbps (megabit per second) broadband connection.
Of course it's not really an inalienable right, but it's a legal one.

What does that even mean? The right to have internet?
Does this mean the government will pay for everyone's internet for them, and buy everyone a computer to use it on if they don't have one?

If thats not the case then I really don't see what effect this has?

Maybe it just means they can't be offered a slow service, or denied the faster, I have no idea.. but this is… well, I don't quite have a word for it.
Also v
The British government has agreed to provide everyone with a minimum 2Mbps broadband connection by 2012 but it is a commitment rather than a legally binding ruling.

if you read the article, is means that ALL ISPs are obligated to provide everyone with an internet connection of at least 1MBs

That is really fast, why do you want better?
Im fine with my 650Kbps (Sorry if I got any capitals/lowercase wrong) and It's just fine.
Only reason anyone would need fast ass internet is to download big ass files, besides that most people just randomly browse webpages and will do fine with slower speeds.

For torrents and such, I guess.

Nah, people watch videos on internets these days.
Well in the UK the government has sold off all utilities so they'll have trouble convincing shareholders to do anything. Ah the joys of privatisation.

Google its planning 1gb fiber optic connections to some people, they are planning 50k people then eventually 500k people as a test.
http://www.google.com/appserve/fiberrfi/Couple of the cities I've lived in are on the list and one is a front runner in Michigan. Think Cloud Networking… oh the possibilities.

If it was made legal right in USA for these speedy internets, we would be screwed. It is spread out enough that it does not make any sense… it would be kind of nice though. Out of curiosity what are your guys' speeds?
