Going to buy a new iPod.

I've had my iPod video 30G white for over 4 years now, and recently I think the HD died inside.

Now I'm planning to buy a new iPod, question is what kind should I get?

Classics only come in 160G, which is way too much for me.

Touch is too expensive for too little space, and IDC for the apps and whatnot, since it only uses wifi anyways.

So this seems like the most plausible thing to get. 16G.

Who has/had one? What do you think of it?

How much is it? I suggest buying a combo; like phone + media player in one. My phone has 32GB storage and I'm very happy with the media player. It plays all formats and play hardly effects the battery life.

I don't care for phones at all, they just need to make calls, I don't even text.

$180 For 16G.

I has one but its 8GB… I like that it has a built in speaker =)

Its plays music and video >.>

Small screen to seriously watch anything besides like music videos

Besides that I don't use it much.

My brother has the itouch and i have to say its much better >.>

Jailbroken i mess around with it sometimes…

iPod touch just seems idk to me, dl a bunch of games and apps and crap, waste time playing them (although they are fun) and you can only use net if there is WiFi around.
It's a lot pricier too. I just don't think I'd use it all that much besides for music.

New nano has built in speaker? That's handy! I doub't I'd use it to watch video's much, I hardly used my iPod video to watch movies/shows, no need for that stuff 'on the go' really.

I personally <3 my iPod Touch. I have a 16G and its amazing. For music playing I just like the GUI and setup it has for everything. All is nicely organized and you can easily guide your way through all of your music without having to use that stupid scroll wheel on the iPod Nano (I have one of those too).

My little bro has one of the square ipods with a screen (cbf to keep track off all these crap names).
It seems pretty well built.

Hmm, they look neat, any suggestions which one(s) I should be looking at?
I mainly just want to listen to music, not too much extra features (Unless they don't cost that much more :]). How do you like the GUI and make/usage of the actual player? Never heard of it before.

Looks like Archos holds only 8gigs? And I'm not sure if I like the GUI and whatnot. You'll have to convince me further.

I would be cool to get something that isn't an iPod though and be different.

Buy a 32gig zune hd. Battery life is incredible, i charge my 64 once a week. Compare that to any of my ipods, and that alone blows it out of the water.

Digital Audio Player/Portable Media player.

You can pick up a 4/8gb DAP for like 40-80$ with a expendable memory slot.

If your not going with the touch for an ipod, I wouldn't buy an ipod at all. There isn't anything special about the ipods that cant be found in a $30 rca mp3 player.

I just lost my amazing 2nd generation nano that had 8gb, it wasn't until after I lost it and realized half my music was in protected AAC format from the itunes store that I realized it wasn't so amazing.. it took a few days of "burning" all my songs to a virtual drive (NoteBurner pirated nontrial version) to get them to mp3 format. Now I have all my songs ported nicely to my 14gb droid phone which has some cool software like (3) aka cubed, and the original music player with the droid is also very cool.

original:

but yea if you're going to waste your money on apple, you'd be best off with this one imo

Just try to avoid the itunes store and keep your songs in a reusable format.

Oh man I'm totally frajillin right now!
The faking Zune 16G seems to BLOW the iPod nano OUT OF THE WATER!
(Thinking about getting a 36G, although it is a bit more pricey…)

Please compare and tell me what you think?! Soooo many more features on Zune for only 10$ more!

I own both ;)
Zune is more music oriented than an ipod touch. Its internet browser is noticeably slower, and there arent nearly as many apps. But when compared to the nano, let me put it this way. A friend borrowed my nano for a day and i didnt notice at all until i saw the dead battery. A friend borrowed my zune for a week, and i noticed right away, but it was returned with the battery status at the exact same place. (He didnt own a charger)

YoHoJo, my Zune HD (32g) is amazing. :) I have it playing 24/7 (no joke, I never have it not play music) and it has a 33 hour battery life (while playing music). :) I'd suggest it.

The only thing is that you can only use Zune Software on Windows. But that's combated by the fact that it includes Zune -> Computer music transferring, which is very nice, in my opinion.

Archos looks nice too. :)

Ok, ZUNE HD is a very good product, the only negative points were…

> The screen is not AS responsive as an IPOD TOUCH.
> The app store in an IPOD TOUCH is significantly better than ZUNE.
> The browser for ZUNE just sucks… and the IPOD TOUCH one is fairly fast.
> I have never used the synchronization between ZUNE and comp, but apple is outstanding when it comes to uploading music.
> There are many more points, simply google search a review of ZUNE and compare vids of IPOD TOUCH and ZUNE.
> The OS on IPOD TOUCH is undoubtedly superior to that of ZUNE'S.

NOTE: Apple is releasing a whole new line of Ipods ranging from Ipod nano's to Ipod touches, I HIGHLY Recommend you DO NOT but an IPod right now. The release will be in less than 3 months. Some say as early as July!

Well if you are going to buy a Zune HD you might as well buy a J3 from Cowon. I have a Cowon S9 and its basically like the first generation of the J3.

It costs 190$ at newegg.ca for the 8 gb version, BUT it comes with slot for a memory card. It has a gorgeous AMOLED screen, a 64 hour battery life for playing back music, extensive equalizer settings, plays all the good music formats (MP3/2, WMA, FLAC, OGG, APE, WAV ).

However if you plan on playing apps or browsering the web then that PMP won't be for you. It doesn't have one and it doesn't have an app store, but it does have a flash player. But I found that most flash games/apps don't work well at all on my S9. The reason why I bought the S9 even though it doesn't have wifi/apps is because it requires no proprietary software, it is a drag and drop player. And as such works on all OS's. If you want something that can have apps or go on the internet - buy a smartphone.

Screen is actually more responsive, its just not as big, thus not wasting battery.

Yes, App store sucks number wise, however, what apps they do have are of very good psp game quality. Plus, all apps are free.

Yes, its based off of internet explorer. It sucks, however, it has he ability to view mediocre flash in some situations. Something apple CANT do.

Zune's sychronization is a lot better. Can synch wirelessly over wifi. Auto converts anything you can throw at it to a suitable format for your player.

You cant say undoubtedly, you dont own one. Thats purely prejudice.

You have no idea if apple is releasing new ipods. They are (usually) very protective of release dates. Besides, honestly. What more useless crap can you throw on an mp3 player. I mean you already have a video camera on one… What next? A hardware feature to sterilize my heroin needles? A bandaid dispenser? I just dont see hoe they can improve on something like that without making it have something rediculous in order for it to be "new"

Maan I don't know what I want anymore.

Archos seems out of the picture, it only holds 8G max?
https://store.archos.com/players-fi-83.html

Zune Seems Cool ($269 for 32G).
But my question to Zune owners is how useful really are all of the 'features' besides video/music playback. The browser can't even youtube, and how are the apps for it, are there even that many/that many ones worth getting?

iPod Classic ($249 for 160G)
It seems to be where I'm leaning a bit now. It just does music/video, but it holds A LOT more than zune for appx the same price (yes it has a lot less features, but will I really be using the extra zune features?)

It just sucks that the iPod classic looks so lame.

Creative Zen didn't really seem to catch my attention.

Also, about all of this 'new iPod soon' hype, proof? If so, I will just wait until later to see what they cook up.

Wizzup?

I don't know wtf anymore :D.

The zune just looks SOOO good, and a few apps/radio tuner would be neat to have.
I'm just learning towards the classic, except it looks like crap, and I've had an iPod video (looks just like classic) for the past 3+ years now, normally I don't care for looks, but ugh it's lame.

I think the most practical thing for me would be the 160G Classic. If only it looked like a zune :p!

And yes you are right, I'm getting too caught up in stuff I don't care too much for. I was 100% happy and dandy with my iPod video, which I used strictly for music, and sometimes video.

The point is that if you only want media player, the Classic is the way to go, in terms of money and storage etc.

I have a 120GB classic, and I only have it half way full after 1.5 years. The thing is impossible to fill.

In the Zune/iPod debate, the final verdict is exceptionally easy to see in your case.

The iPod touch > Zune in terms of features, and the 64GB version is like 50 bucks more. If you're spending 250 on it anyway, the extra 50 for a superior product is worth it.

The Zune HD > Any other apple product, in terms of features and price. But that isn't a fair comparison, because it is the top end Zune. Like comparing a top of the line gaming PC with windows to a first version mac, windows will win.

In your case, you want a simple media player.

Zune is extra baggage that you don't require, leaving the iPod range, or the stuff you've already ruled out.

I'd say classic, well… It's a classic. Classic mp3 player, just the media playing, with tons of storage. Really durable, I drop mine all the time and it doesn't even really dent/scratch.

So is my J3 suggestion being ignored? :( As far as music playback goes, it is going to own every Apple product, and videos look really nice on AMOLED screens.

Its not going to get anywhere close to the same storage of a ipod classic though … but why do you need 160 gb on your portable media player…

Well, personally, if a media player has less than 50GB of storage, I wont even consider it. I have 30GB of just music, and I have no desire to spend hours trimming the songs that I either wont listen to, or don't like. I also have 25GB of videos, which is semi important to me. If it doesn't have a large enough storage, I will rule it out.

If I were you, I'd just get the most memory for the cheapest that you can. (160GB == not enough for me. x])

And the thing I like a lot about my Zune HD 32G is that it looks way sexier than an iPod Touch. :3 (Or any iPod, imo, for that matter.)

Radio's also nice. :) And, again, battery life is much better (which is a big point if you're truly only going to be using it for music). Oh, and I never had problems with the touch screen being unresponsive or anything. I think it's just as good or better than the iPod Touch. But that Archos looked nice. :3 I like the Archos3 I think. The most touch screen one. :p I just wish it held more music. :/

2010-06-26 16:25:57

I don't see how zune is better (besides battery life and sexyness) than the iPod Touch, it has a fragzillion apps, while zune has like 20 shitty ones?)

iPod Classic seems the best way to go, although I still don't like the look of it very much at all :/. Trying to find some 'replacement housing' for it, but I can't seem to find anything good.

E:I also hear the web browser on Zune is pewp.

1st point: Yeah, it looks gross. And large. And bulky. That's the whole classic look too though. There are cases for it that make it look less terrible, and protect it and stuff. Keep looking :).

To the edit: That is also what I hear. Slower than iTouch and based on IE, which also makes it default to shitty.

The important thing is not the space, not the apps it has, not how cool it is. The important thing is how easy and fast it is to use. When I had my brother's iPod I nearly always left it home just because I found it awful to use. It had like 1 button and a touchpad around that button with which I was supposed to scroll. It sucked. Go to some store and actually try the players and their UIs.

The iPod is extremely easy to use.

You scroll your finger clockwise to go down, counterclockwise to go up. Press the button in the middle to choose. How could it get any easier?

In the classic that I have, I find the scrolling to be a realistic speed, if not a little on the slow side. On the other hand, I see what you mean. My friend has the nano (whatever generation produced the square ugly one) and the scrolling on it is a little fast for me.

That is really really silly. If you really want that much space you can just buy the 32GB J3/Sansa and buy a 32 GB microSD.

I don't see the point though because your never going to listen to almost 600 hours of music in the life of your device anyway.

Not like it matters, because YoHoJo doesn't even know what he wants anymore. You can buy a iPod Touch and get lots of fart applications, a few decent applications, and even fewer great ones. You can buy the Zune HD which is trying to take over the iPod Touches territory and failing hard at it, or you can buy a J3 with expandable memory, and which doesn't try to compete with either the Zune HD and iPod Touch but rather competes in its own niche.

Or if like you say you don't really want web surfing, wifi or video, you can buy like a sansa that also has expandable memory.

If battery is a real concern I really don't think you'll beat the J3. If you want wifi and apps then nothing really is going to compete with the iPod Touch, but I was willing to give that stuff up if it meant not using proprietary software and hardware. I decided that having a awesome screen + no proprietary crap > wifi & apps. At the end of the day, it is what YoHoJo really wants - and its starting to sound hell of a lot like he wants wifi and apps.
