You would make use of flash on your phone to do what, exactly?

I've been trying to decide which phone to buy in a month, but I can't seem to think of major reasons that would make me need flash

The sad thing is in fact that flash s*cks *ss as a whole though. Surely, it is a miss when your phone doesn't support it, but we would be better off by not having it all together.

I disagree kinda. My phone (N900) is just like a computer, but I can carry it with me more easily and the battery lasts much longer. I coded some Simba stuff on it. I often use it to view websites. It supports flash and as much as I hate flash, it is used way too often to simply ignore it.

I know flash sucks, but lets face it.. there's too many dam things now a days that require it. And shit, if you're going to spend all that money for a smart phone why would you want one that can't handle flash? Much less a small over priced touchscreen laptop or a gargantuan version of the ipod touch which can't either.

All in all, sucks to be a mac.

But what specifically? Only major things I can think of….

  • Video
  • Games
  • Sports score updates/News updates (the ticker things)

You wouldn't be watching videos on your phone all that often, and if you do, 90% of the time it's going to be Youtube which the iPhone has a custom made app for. If you're looking for more games, playing games meant for a computer with a phone probably won't work out so well - you're better off going for the larger market of games meant specifically for your phone, which would be the iPhone. And then sports, there's an app for that. With multi tasking in the iPhone 4 it won't be any harder to go to another app than open another website, not to mention the app will be custom made for the phone.

Personally, those are the only uses I could see myself using flash for, but the iPhone compensates for them all (arguably provides a better alternative, but that'd be an opinion). What did I miss?

A *lot* of sites use flash for their main page as well.

Your point at custom app: The problem is that youtube is just *one* site, and there are literally thousands of other video sites. There lies the problem. Apple allows the users to watch the most required and wanted video site (youtube), but drops all the others. This is exactly why you don't want Apple to become ANY bigger… They are a direct treat to our freedom. (In this case freedom of choice) Apply doesn't even allow other apps for (some) other sites.

The whole point of flash was to create ONE application that ``does it all'', and they succeeded in that. Writing an app for every site that uses flash would be ridiculous, and a direct attempt to reverse all that. I don't think that's the way to get rid of flash.

If it was a computer not supporting flash (and in turn thousands of video sites, etc), then I'd get it. But it's a phone. I'm not going to go browsing through several video sites during my free time on my phone; Youtube is enough (along with the apps that likely exist for other fairly large video sites).

According to Jobs, he doesn't want flash because it is "proprietary, unreliable and not secure, and its performance drains battery life." He doesn't want to get rid of it by making an app for every flash site, but rather he "supports open standards on the Web, including HTML5, CSS and JavaScript." If anything, to me it seems his hope only extends our freedom rather than limits it.

I just stated Safari does not comply to the normal HTML5 standards. See the mac "HTML 5" demos. They even block other browsers based on user agent. If it's not

I find it funny how everyone talks shit about flash, but whats to stop people from making crappy HTML5 code? Flash applications aren't as bad as people make them out to be if they aren't programmed by a horrible programmer.

It is like those flash ads that take up 100% of your CPU to display some animation and count how many times you click to win X prize. Sure there is no reason why that ad should use up 100% of your CPU, but is it flashes fault? I can create horrible code in any other interpreted language that runs just as crappy.

What makes you think moving towards HTML5 will change the fact that 98% of the people don't program for efficiency because hardware has become so advanced now?

Well in that case, notify all the current phone manufacturers and tell them to stop advertising there phones as such.

But really, were all different. Times are different now. Its fun to have a a phone that is able to play cool games, calculator, internet, and music when your away from a computer.

Right now I consider all the new phones as Gadgets that have the ability to make and receive calls.

HTML5 isn't about efficiency, honey.. It's pretty impossible to program HTML that would be a heavy load on coputer hardware; HTML5 is more about altering coding standards so that the process of creating and reading the source of a website is simplified. With this said, "efficiency" regarding this topic refers to coding standards.

And, I'm with Wizzup on this one. Phones are indeed advancing into becoming PDAs with a calling functionality/SmartPhones. Those of you who cannot see that, seem to have no use for it; no offense, but I think that is so due to your young age. It is inevitable that a persons requirements for functionality grows with the person himself.

I have to disagree, if you want a phone don't buy an andriod or iphone it's a huge waste of money, instead get a basic phone that can call/text. Makes no sense to have an all in one smart phone with flash limitations simply because the manufacturer likes to buttrape their customers. Same could be said with the iTampon

Just ring Apple up and tell them to stop selling their phone for more than a laptop then ;).

It runs around 800 for no contract, and a similar laptop would be like 400, max. (Unless it was apple, then it would be 1500, min)

I went on a trip to England with other students to visit the universities of Cambridge, London and Oxford, and I also had a project that had to be nearly finished when I got home. A fellow student who is also in my group had the phone too, and together with git we actually did most of the project (coding and testing) on our phones, in that week. Someone somewhere said that phones are just phones. I would have to strongly disagree. (I'm sure there are better phones, this is just one that I like the sounds of,) Take the HTC Incredible, for example. It has 800MB of RAM, and a 1GHz processor (along with other impressive things). To me, having a 1GHz processor with 800MB of RAM in my pocket, a touch screen, an eight MP camera (it may be 5MP), and (I think) multitasking, all in my pocket, is quite impressive.

tl;dr, phones are not "just" phones anymore.

If you want android and htc sense, its nice. Although its the first 4g phone in america, I would wait. It has loads of bugs and exploits that are yet to be patched. It has a capacitive screen which means it requires electrical current. some of the units do not have proper grounding which means the screen will not properly work if you are not touching another part of the phone at the same time.
Some of the units also have bugs with the sdcard slot. I think an ota patch may have been released though.
Dont forget the extra 10USD/month on top of the normal smartphone contract as a result of 4g.
The Samsung Galaxy S is also coming to sprint soon. It has a slightly smaller screen but a humming-bird gpu. I think it produces 50k polygons a second? Something like that.

Tbh, the smartphone market is moving _way_ too rapidly to make a purchase that wont be outdated within the next 2 - 6 months.

I believe motorola is releasing a phone by hte end of the year with a 2GHz processor.

Might edit this post later.

I don't particularly care how powerful it is. It sucks for real gaming because its touch screened. Lets say I got that phone. I don't have an internet plan for my phone because that's like $30 per month. Not that I would want to use the internet on my phone anyway, but I can't do that either. Now what is there left for me to do? Take pictures, maybe some video, and call people. Why does it particularly matter, then that its so powerful. I doubt that I'll ever want something as such until they come out with a really thin version of the Pandora that I can use as a phone too.

The problem here in the US is availability and price.
I just looked at TMobile-UK, and a Smartphone plan is _half_ as much as a Smartphone plan here in the US. TMobile-UK advertised a Smartphone plan at £20 a month, about 29USD. The price is double or triple that here in the US for an equivalent plan. For example, at verizon, you need to buy a voice package, then a texting package, then an internet package. The internet package itself is 30USD a month. I believe TMobile-US is the same price for an internet package.

As more and more internet heavy devices (such as the ipad) are released, the carriers are starting to change the plans from Unlimited internet plans to per MB, which will cost users more.

I just checked O2-UK, and unlimited texting on their network is £5 a month. In the US, unlimited texting can be from 15 - 30USD a month.

The entire wireless business in the US is a joke and a scam.

No I don't want internet on my phone. Its slower as far the internet goes, is slower as far as browsing goes (speed at which i can do things), its slower as far as speed/snappiness of the device goes, its slower as far as typing goes, its smaller, its less capable in terms of variety of things i can do, etc. Buy a laptop, they probably cost the same amount of money if you were to buy one of these phones without a plan.

I made a comparison to convince myself earlier that behind all the flashy marketing the iPhone truly is inferior (some of this was done off the top of my head, so my apologies if something is off):

Also note that there are two new Droids coming out soon.

If you look at the iPhone itself, I suppose it's not that bad, but throw in AT&T (if you're from the US), take a closer look at the app stores, and then question Apple itself, the decision becomes clear, at least to me.

Alrighty, there are a few things to clear up here. No one, no one, offers /free/ tethering on that chart. The only way to get tethering is via an application that requires you to root your phone (Android). Keep in mind that if you do that, certain carriers watch more carefully than others and may catch you.

Your data speed section of the chart is very limited. There are also network with 3.5G and it has been proven that TMobile's HSPA+ network (which is still considered 3G) is many times faster than Sprint's WiMAX 4G network. (You see, the wireless business can be very misleading ;) )

Every phone that gets Android 2.2 (Froyo), will have full working Adobe flash. The Nexus one, google's phone, will be the first to have Android 2.2, so your chart is wrong there. Updates for it are already being sent OTA.
Both the Evo and Incredible are limited because they are still on Android 2.1. They only have flash lite via HTC Sense. Flash lite is very limited compared to the Flash Android 2.2 will have on board. (only plays videos and does not always work. Android 2.2 will have Flash that is officially supported by Adobe, and will fully work and interact with the phones user, an example is a flash game).

A side note: the iphone4 will not have true multitasking, only certain services will be able open. And we all know that the max memory for an iphone is 64GB.

Camera MP does not always matter! Phones often compress the vids and pics immensely to save space. What good is a 12MP camera if the device compresses the output too much?

I just wanted to clear some stuff up :)

Really? I've never seen rooting the phone mentioned in all the articles/videos I've seen about tethering, weird :\ And I read that at some point Google was forced to remove the tethering apps only for T-Mobile customers, which led me to believe that the other companies allowed it. Perhaps the article was outdated. EDIT: After googling a bit, apparently there are apps that allow you to tether without rooting?

So just lash, but flash honestly sucks, and makes your battery die faster. So you just dislike the mentality of apple. Ok, but that doesn't make an iphone a bad phone.

Well I'd like to say that there's really no point in getting an iphone because you either A: don't give a shit about anything and just want a basic cheap durable reliable nice phone that can text, call, and have a good batter life. or B. a phone that does literally everything.

The iphone certainly does not fit into category A because it's supposed to be apple's 'super altra pay me hundreds of dollars now' deluxe all in one portable apple accessory. So if you wanted a basic phone, this is definitively not A.

Now, it would be arguable that the iphone is a category B phone, and you'd be right. Two years ago. The technology has been far surpassed, not only because of advancements in technology, but advancements in the businesses world. You see apple, a strong company with a lot of loose individuals come up with ideas, some of which are very popular, usually out of popularity. Which is, in the business world genius, but on the customer end you're getting your money taken from you like a crack addict on a friday night. So after apple introduces their great business idea into the world, smarter.. yet less creative companys… such as google, make that idea better. Not only from a profitable business prospective, but from a customer end aswell.

You can claim flash is not important, that it sucks, and even that (God help us all) html5 is gonna "save the day" for apple. But you're missing the referendum. And that is, apple does not want people using flash because they think it will lower the amount of applications purchased from their custom made application store. Which you have to admit, is absolute absurdity to deny, intentional even. Personally, I know anyone making these claims is saying it out of defense of the iphone, which has brainwashed you into believing it is the greatest thing ever, when really it's another market ploy by apple. Flash is a great thing, and would allow any device to expand limitless in terms of non external functionality, such as games, media, interactivity, and graphic layouts. ect. ect.

What does the droid? (or any phone have) that the iphone doesn't. Well for starters, the maker of this *any* device, have a product which in comparison is not backed and produced by a corporation that isn't geared on having all it's customers under their control. The makers of the iphone software have this to say about flash "flash will never work well on a mobile device".

Besides, how long has the apple iphone marketplace been around? Quite some time, logically they are going to have more apps, but certainly not better or even useful for that matter, hell here's a better question to think about : what does the iphone do that the droid does not? And the only answer to that is apple exclusive products… ties in perfectly does it not?

Sure the iphone is "not a bad phone" but… it's like paying more for a less of a product, does that make much sense? Apple mentality is money. 'nuff said.

Oh and btw, who cares about battery usage. The droid's battery life is nearly 100% better. ;)

I'm implying that touch screen sucks for most gaming.

Well, I have free 100 Mbps Wifi on my Uni, so internet speed certainly isn't a concern. Browsing is pretty fast (I use firefox on it), typing goes at a steady pace; I'm content because I don't have to carry around a laptop for such simple tasks and don't need to worry about battery life or a spot where I can place my laptop.

By the way, I don't know about the US, but I can listen to my (and control) own radio stream from my phone while cycling through the Netherlands. Costs about 20kb/s, and never loses connection. Try that with your laptop. (I actually think my phone can do more than most of the Windows laptops out there…)

Icefire, I dont know how much a data plan costs for the iphone, but i could have upgraded my phone and gotten an iphone for free. And according to this they are fairly equal except for flash. And I don't really want to compare the iphone 4 since its not out yet and because i think the 3gs can still hold its own against the others, but this refutes your battery life claim.

Im very much not saying that i like that apple is very closed and whatnot, but i even with that, to an end user, i don't very much see how that is all the important, and thus makes it a worse phone.

So your internet, browsing, and battery life are all equal to that of your laptop (your battery so much so that you don't even have to worry about it apparently)? I can understand bulk, but if I actually wanted to get things done, i'd probably have no qualms with carrying a laptop, and if it didn't really matter, I would really have no pressing need to use my phone for such things.

End users do care about the applications they are allowed to install. Apple restricts the AppStore to a specific range of applications. For example, both my dad and my mom can not (in any possible way) listen to the radio stream we have set up at home, simply because the radio is OGG Vorbis audio. (A very common audio format, even used in WebM)
The reason? Because Apple does not support open formats, and does not allow any application that supports OGG Vorbis / OGG Theora. Sounds like quite the problem to end users who want to listen to internet radio's or just their music files. There's heaps of other troubles with the iPhone, and multitasking is one of the most important ones. I don't know why you ignore this, because it does matter to end users. You start an application, and the one that was currently running is killed??? End users hate this, and I've seen many people switch to Android just because of this fact alone. I heard iPhone 4 may have some multitasking, so I guess that is good news for the people who really want an iPhone.

Yeah, the battery lasts more than 20 hours when I use my phone intensively, and for about a week when I don't use it intensively. No worries about the battery. Internet and Browsing are quite equal, yes. I have firefox on both machines, and the bookmarks are synced. Firefox is probably a bit slower on my phone but nothing that I cannot live with. I have the adblock/flashblock extensions, so I'm content. As far as other applications go, my needs may be less than yours. For my all day work I have the "X Terminal" application. I can use this to access most of my programs.

Apart from that, PDF readers; AbiWord / OpenOffice; VNC viewers; wireshark / aircrack; and transmission for torrents, although I mainly torrent on my sheevaplug. (Which I can access with my terminal)

But that's not the phone. If apple were to unrestrict the appstore, you wouldn't need to get a new phone. As it is, if you jailbreak your iphone you get any app that's made. I have jailbroken my ipod and there's only a handful of apps that I installed. For the most part their restrictions don't bother me because I haven't wanted anything that wasn't already there (for the most part). Just because its open doesn't mean that everything you want to be on the phone will be available. Yea, i guess it has the possibility for someone to make it, but nonetheless, it won't necessarily be made anyway.

I'm not trying to say iphones are great, as i said before, I'm just saying that its not a bad phone compared to a lot of other phones, even ones running android. May not be the best, but if everyone were only going to buy the "best" phone, there wouldn't be as many phones as there are.

I didn't know end users did want to jailbreak their phones, but didn't need flash… The phone can currently only run iOS, so that's what you'll be limited to. The phone is useless without iOS, and iOS does not give you permissions for everything; DRM on steroids really.

Actually, the hardware isn't that special either. I think soon we'll have Dual Core ARM's, which was release only a day after the iPhone 4 specs (surprise surprise), so the iPhone 4 will surely lack in performance too, compared to the upcoming phones.

As for the OS'es, the android os and maemo are certainly better. Hardware for android phones differ a lot though, so you can't make an exact comparison.

I love my Macbook <3

While i don't really support Flash either i think a lot of people don't seem to realize how much it has revolutionized the internet and helped to make it what it has become today. It has brought a wealth of multimedia to the internet and has certainly played its role in supporting yesterdays stone age browsers. Sure we have HTML 5 now so we don't really need to be using Flash and making ourselves an open vulnerability but at the same time i am sure they could develop something new which requires the use of Flash on the internet.

Also i don't own a iPhone or iMac or iTouch simply because i see them as gimicky over priced pieces of s**t. But each to their own on that one, i only got a Macbook to show it off in McDonalds every morning, because they are pretty small and lightweight and have a decent battery life. But at the end of the day Apple shouldn't really be restricting what developers and users can and can't use on their device. They say some bulls**t like it will reduce the quality of bad "Apps" which we all know is utter tosh and at the end of the day if i want to buy a "Sh***y Flash App" or run "Flash which drains the battery on my device" then so be it.

While i agree with what people say about Flash being crap, if people want to run it on their device they shouldn't be restricted from doing that, it is obvious Steve Nobz has been eating too much Flash for breakfast and needs to get a grip and realize he is making their devices unattractive for corporations which may be forced to go to other phone venders (BlackBerry ;)) simply because they are more open and more suitable for a business / work enviroment.

Oh and did i forget the key sentence … THEY MIGHT ACTUALLY SUPPORT FLASH!

Rant finished

@ Wizzup? Thanks, that's what I meant was "Apple plans to no longer have flash on their products that are shipped" … or something to that affect.

Yea Boreas, now mac users will need to learn how to install flash… the world may end as they know it.
