http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/04/29/national/main6442729.shtmlhttp://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE63P5WK20100426pretty much, it gives authority to the police to pull someone over and ask for proof of citizenship. To pull one over though, there must be at least some reasonable suspicion.
what are your thoughts on this law?
i personally dont see how it could be bad for Americans. Finally the government is hunting down illegals and kicking them out. Living in SoCal most of my life, i have experienced the effects that massive amounts of illegal immigrants can have. I for one hope that California adopts a law like this also.

They can't just pull over and ask. There needs to be a REAL reason besides racial profiling in order to ask for proof of citizenship.
Normal it went something like this (I THINK!): Break the law (something minor), get a ticket/pay a free, and you're done. The Police had no interest in/no power deporting you or whatnot because that wasn't their job, it was the job of the federal government. But now they CAN smack the law down on illegals.
I for one after lots of discussion and pondering with my girlfriend and friends totally think this law is fine. It's ALREADY a 'law' that you can't be an illegal immigrant (DUH!?), so I dont see why the hell people (Mexicans :p) are complaining about it!

^ well from what i heard, the main complaint about it is the racial profiling that can occur.
http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2010/04/23/20100423arizona-immigration-law-passed.html halfway down the page, on the right hand side. there is a list that shows what is in the new law. :) very interesting
and i like the fact that you will actually get in trouble for using illegal day labor now

i live in arizona myself, so i pretty much have to give my opinion, :D
i agree with the laws 100%. i honestly wish i can go to the local circle K and not have to wait in line because there are illegal immigrants trying to by beer, but cant and get pissed off because they need to show id(and dont have any). not only that, but most illegals are pretty much treated like slaves, being forced to live in small abandoned houses with other families for long periods of time, just so they can work all day in the hot sun with almost no pay what so ever. the sooner they get kicked out the better for them and every one else\
BUT this being said, i do think gaining citizinship/working visa should be made A HELL of a lot easier to get. first, you need to apply(which takes 10-20 years), then you need to be fluent in english, and be able to pass an american history test that almost noone can pass anyways

Well, If I were the minister I would do both sides of the Issue (if possible.).
Here's my crazy suggestion: Pull random ppl over, if they are illegal, then kick them outa whatever place + Fines if they aren't poor. If they are legal, get the officer to say "Sorry for using up ur time sir/madam/etc, Here's $10 for your troubles."
=D. I think this law is useful for keeping order and restricting general "freedom". But then, i guess the politicians dunno really what to do, so a law like this is expected. This law will work… to a degree. Watch it be modified over the years :).

The only reason that they live in small homes is because they can't afford better. They work for almost no pay because that is better than living in mexico without a job, or with a job that pays even less.
Work visas are easy to get, they just cost money…which is why the illegals come here is to make money because they are unemployed in mexico.
All that being said, I hate the drug trafficking and the crime that comes from illegal immigration(not necessarily Mexicans). There are lots of gang wars that are close to crossing the border…
I agree 100% with the law, and as YoHoJo said, they can't just pull you over for no reason. But when they do pull you over they have the power to ask for identification(every cop does) but they just have the authority to do the job of the border patrol(kinda sorta).
Edit: I am sorry to say that I don't think California will pass this law or one like it because your politics suck over there. :P
I live in Arizona, and I read a newspaper article that talked about all kinds of things the state was going through to prevent racial profiling, and it seems like they're doing everything they can.
Also, I don't see why people are raging at this law in particular, it seems that all it's doing is giving cops the power to arrest people for being illegal instead of some other gov't agency. I think it makes more sense to challenge immigration laws in general.

Well, reviving an old topic:
Basically, pretty recently, my town enacted a new policy. The town now issues "(MyTown'sName) Community ID Cards" to anyone who wants one. They are issued by the Latin Defense Council, or something like that, but anyone, hispanic or not, can get one.
They're technically government issue ID, since my town endorses them
The law was intended to be a protest of the Arizona law
And honestly, a lot the people being deported have been in the US for 10+ years. It's destroying lives

its helping in arizona. employment sky rocketed, and construction is also starting to boom, which means more of a chance for work in my future. the only thing thing that i have noticed is a shortage of hispanics, and more help wanted signs.
just because you lived here for 10 years doesnt make you legal ;)

Well first off I can only half understand the whole idea of the racial profiling. If you think about it. If you are pulled over for the illegal check and are illegal, well then you can't protest the whole racial profiling idea because technically you have 0 rights because you are not a citizen of the country. Honestly my pov of the whole Arizona, California, and Texas illegal immigrant situation is I don't care if they have been in this Country forever, if they have money, or if they have a family here. If you can't be like the rest of anyone that came here and get proper immigration papers then you should be shipped back to your own country. All of our families had to get immigration papers when the great migration occured, why are you suddenly home free? Just because you snuck into the country? Yeah well you just broke a law by sneaking in, what an example you have set for yourself on your first introduction to the country.
Yeah it may seem harsh to deport people that have been here for 10+ years and have no legit papers. But honestly if you think about it, they usually haven't done much of anything for anyone but themselves.
People say they take the jobs that nobody will work because apparently Americans have to much ego to take the low class jobs that they have. Yeah right, so the kids in high school that are willing to do almost anything for money lost plenty of opportunities. And with unemployment being up, "recession" occurring people needed lots of work to help fight the battle. Build, buy, sell American products. We need to get our GDP back up to survive. American products are more durable and can be better anyways. Chinese jobs are doing nothing for anyone but the Chinese. And usually that's for the worse anyways because human rights are violated so much as it is.
I really could care less whether or not racial profiling happened to anyone, whether legal or not. What is five minutes of your time going to take. All the cop has to do anyways is ask for a drivers license or other form of ID, run it through the computer in his car. Make sure it's legit and the 15 second walk back to your car hand it back and your done. It should be a standard procedure damnit.
Seriously if you get pulled over for a traffic violation they have to check your ID anyways. They know whether or not you are legal in seconds and it only takes minor amounts of time and money to arrest you and take you to get deported. It's just a waste of time and money to have to have another department have to find the illegal, check his paperwork, put him to custody, and then deport him. Allowing the police officers to do so saves a few steps. Which can add up to huge savings.
We are over governed and their are way to many government agencies and programs right now that waste way to much money. If we could combine many of these organizations into one, highly trained, highly versatile, and high effective program. So many possiblities for effeciency increases and cash savings.
Anyways what is a little racial profiling if it saves jobs, time, and taxpayer money? Illegal immigrants are abusing our system by taking government opportunties like welfare, social security, and health care. This is restricting our own system from helping us and taking away from the legitmate deserving Americans.
I am not saying that there are not certain legitimate Americans that abuse the system already, but that's why I also believe that when you apply for welfare you should pass drug tests. Tax payers already pretty much have to pass a drug test to be allowed to pay taxes since every job in the country unless you are self employed makes you pass drug tests to be employed. And when you are employed you automatically are forced to pay taxes. Not being employed means little to no taxes. Welfare users should only be allowed to buy the basics (No high end foods like steak, jewelery, or other non essential items) and also be scheduled with someone to help get your life back on track so you can get off of welfare and payback what you received and get on track to a great life/american dream.

I must agree with this last part. It sickens me to see a signs that first say the message in spanish (or japanese or whichever language), THEN what it means in english.
I do disagree with being able to just pull them over. There needs to be a cause; my dad got sent to jail for 30 days for possession and had to do 160 days of community service (CalTrans roadside pickup, 80 weekends in a row (so 1 and a 1/2 years almost)), when the reason he was pulled over was for "dark tinting". There was factory tinting on the car.
EDIT:
Mr.Klean,
I was going to quote your post and point out everything i agree/disagree with you on, but let me pretty much sum it up: i agree. It's bullshit that just because the relatively small portion of people who are of a different race who are legal complain about "racial profiling", we can't do things like this across the nation. I'm REALLY glad this law passed. Imho it sets a great example for other nations, especially California and Texas. Living in California, I would LOVE it if Jerry Brown (new governor) passed a bill like this.

Well the charges were possibly a little outrageous but c'mon he was still breaking the law either way. Just because he is family doesn't mean he should get any breaks from the law. No offense or anything.
Anyways the law specifically states that it can't just be pulling you over just because they think you are illegal. They have to have another reason to pull you over then this law gives them the ability to take you to deportation if when they do pull you over you are illegal. They are not just pulling people over to check.
So explaination:
Before the law: Cop pulls you over for speeding. Cop finds that you are illegal. cop has to contact the immigrations and customs to get you deported. Which just takes more time and resources.
With the law: Cop pulls you over for speeding. Cop finds that you are illegal. Cop detains you and takes you to be deported instead of having to rely on customs.
I totally agree with you on the cops pull people over for absolute BS. I have been victim to it MANY times. Me and my friend were driving around trying to burn time and we got pulled over for and I quote "driving aimlessly" by a Wisconsin State Trooper. Also we got pulled over by a Winnebago County Sheriff for "cross the centerline" on a road that had no centerline. (Was a residential street with light traffic…. Meaning no centerline just pavement…)
Neither of which had any implications like warnings or tickets. Just time wasting and overall annoyances.
