A new SRL language ?

First of all : I'd like to put this in the general news section, however that might be considered as leaking.

So, basically in the gravedigged thread about SRL Member standards being low started a little, and very quickly ended debate about SRL maybe going away from Pascal.

This is not even supported by anoying firmly except me, and would require alot of work (if its not even impossible).

So, say if you support or disagree, knowing :

The SupraMassive rewrite it'd include, the gigantic work which would be needed…

But also the good things, a new language (thinking of Python) would open great new possibilities, also, Reflection is broken (of what i've understood) because of the bad adaptation of Reflection for SCAR.

I personally would like to change language, although I do realise its half if not fully impossible, and would be a massive chunk of work.

There was a project started (and partially completed) for C++ I think?

Would switching languages also include making a new bot or would Simba or Scar just be adapted to use the chosen language?

So something like rsbots? I am all for it.

Reflection is working ;)

Also, Python or C seems like good languages imo

Python was discussed, for now it was decided to get Pascal in full working order. However you might see python in Simba later down the road.

I like the idea/possibility of multiple languages.

@Python, hahaha! <3 the simplicity of body..

The C++ implementation (CBAS) was hard to debug.

I think we should switch to python.

C# is fail Microsoft stuff. Requires mono to run on GNU/Linux, a lot different code base, etc…

No C# hate that shit… Had to use it for Glider.

Python seems to be the way to go I reckon. So easy to code in it

WoW botting… tsk tsk..

Python seems to be the most supported language so far..?

Nava2

People posted my cpp vs. c# opinions. I just really don't like the syntax and that its Microsoft :<

Anyways, python is the best choice thus far. Other things to consider would be other *interpreted* languages.

Ruby, Python, Perl, LISP.. Thost are about all I can think of.

LISP? >_<

perl? Perl has always been interpreted!

Dan Cardin

2010-06-05 15:01:54

perl really is not a good language for this. I don't know anything about ruby, but in my opinion, python is the best choice (of those above) because of at least the fact that it is very similar to pascal.

The syntax is awesome and a hell of a lot better than Java IMHO. So the only reason you dislike it is because it's made by Microsoft? Way to go!

It's by sure one of the fastest and easiest ways to develop windows and web applications. As-well as using the awesome .NET framework.

I do agree that it sucks for Linux/BSD users, but it's made by Microsoft! What do you think? It's going to support any/every competitor of the Windows operating system? Doesn't work that way..

What about the fact that Python was developed on UNIX based systems and is well supported on *every* platform..?

Sorry, but it should work that way.

don't we…erm…want an interpreted language anyway? unless we are just planning on taking the syntax and not the actual language.

C# is best for end user applications. Where do the majority of end users lie? Windows. And like Dan mentioned, you get the .net framework and wonderful syntax as well.

But like the other Dan mentioned, this thread really ought to be about interpreted languages only. Sorry for threadjack..

Narcle

Ruby would be cool to use. XD

Along with crap libraries and Java-alike syntax/work flow. (Ugh!!!)

Some one should put out a vote. I think java would be good since it has worked well on other bots. But If we were to make it only for runescape, jagex would be on our asses again (This goes for all languages)

No java. It has been said before, and I agree, no java. That brings us closer to all the other bots (That have been shut down!). We need an interpreted language anyways iirc.

staying with pascal for that poll is silly because you say "if there would be a change".

Anyways, i'd just like to inquire as to why people like python? How many of you have actually used python for anything? and what is it that you like?

I have, and I really really love the syntax.

One downside, is that code can be harder to follow due to the non-static type nature of variables, but I think the flexibility because of that far out weighs it.

The syntax is cleaner, theres *significantly* less bloat than any other language, and best part.. its FAST.

Oh, and there is no compiling of code, thus things need to be distributed as source! :) (I guess you could obfus, but not really necessary..)

I wonder if there isn't a way to do something like what i think is done these days with javascript code to make it run faster (V8 engine and such). I mean speed doesn't particularly matter in this case of RS but i'm sure it couldn't hurt.

@Nava2 - I'm glad at least some of the people advocating python have used it and like it for tangible reasons.

I think that we should stay with pascal, but since I don't think that is going to happen, my next preference is python, as it is simmilar but is still used today. perhaps we do as the simba plan is, and have multiple scripting languages, that we can pick and choose between, so individual people can pick which language they want.
Will it be possible to have SRL in one language, and the script in another, and have it still compile?

I believe they compile it to machine code at runtime. It'll be very hard to adjust the interpreter to work that way.

Those voting java, Sorry, but it won't happen.

I'm saying this because its not flexible enough for what we need. We need interpreted languages, not compiled.

Java is interpreted after it is compiled to bytecode, so perhaps you need to redefine that 'requirement'.

I guess what I meant is a language which has an interpreter by default that can be used so that we have a client.

sorry if I'm being unclear.

I voted stick with pascal… not because I like pascal or anything, but because if we were to change the language it would be the same as creating a whole new… everything… I guess I'm saying keep SRL with pascal and if we want a new language, just create a whole new bot/community/everything :p

But I'd love to learn a new language as well :)
