Telemarketing

It was my first real day at work on telemarketing business. That's means I call people via phone (no random ones, just people who have ordered stuff in phone in the past) and sell them magazines. In Finland this is a highly despised job, because in most firms the workers only get paid for how many products they have sold. If you sell nothing, you get nothing.
So, this was my first day at work (6 hours, including some training and 45 min of breaks) and I already sold magazines for 8 people :) Not too bad. I'm not sure how much the provision is, but probably like 8-12€ per deal, which means I probably made a hefty ~80€ in 6 hours.

Is telemarketing a known on a rather unknown thing in your country?
Is it despised in your country?
Have you ever worked on a telemarketing company? How was it?

Most people I know dislike telemarketers (in the United States), and I personally don't enjoy having to answer the phone just to hear a sales pitch for some overpriced product I don't really need.

I always wondered what kind of evil creature was on the other end of the line… now I know it, it is marpis…

Aha, my family hates them. I answer the phone and say hello and they go on about some weird-ass product and then I start yelling and cussing them out and then they don't say anything and hang up.

My family as well as everyone I know hate it when telemarketers call. I don't know if 10 dollars a magazine is good, cause in the US, I can't even imagine if a telemarketer gets 1 sale a day.

D: I always feel bad when I answer because I'm not 18 so I can't buy anything anyway. And my parents always yell at telemarketers. I don't get the point. Why can't one just say "Sorry, I'm not interested." like one may do with other sales men. Why does a call make it so much worse? A call can be ended without question. You can't just have a live sales person stop communicating as you choose.

tl;dr, I'm sorry that people are stupid and get upset when you merely attempt to do their job.

my family gets upset because they ALWAYS call during dinner, never any time else. the product trying to get sold is also bogus, like health insurence or something

So say "Sorry, I'm eating dinner with my family. Goodbye."? I don't see why you have to be upset. :/ It's not their fault that they call when they do. Nor is it their fault that you're eating dinner when they call.

A lot of times they don't take "no" for an answer. They keep pestering you until you get angry and hang up.

when i answer the phone and it's a telemarketer, i always go "No hablo" (roughly 'no speak' in spanish) so they are like "one moment please, we will transfer you to a spanish speaker" then when they transfer, i go "I don't speak spanish.." and wait for them to switch back, then just hang up.

I let them say their pitch, then hang up. I tell them I'm not interested? 3 people from the same company ring back at another time. I'm rude to them? so what. Thats my preference.

nice but if you only get commission and only that, i would look for a second, more stable job since some days can net you a great load (like your first day), but if you can't sell one some days, then you get nothing. It may not be a problem now but if you start to have a string of days where that happens, it may get tough on you financially.

and yes… where i live, its a job where everyone avoids as well. Not only that but everyone also tends to avoid customer service as well which is answering to people's complaints no matter what the complaint is through the telephone.

I just dont answer the phone lol. The last one I used was when they said "Hi, is mr or mrs. ***** there please" (mispronouncing my last name of course), I said "sorry we're just robbing the place" and hung up..annoying cause if you try and be nice they keep trying to enter you into conversations and fuck its dinner time

Have you ever worked on a telemarketing company? How was it?
No, but a mate of mine did, he said he has never received so much abuse over the phone, we all hate it (no offence with your job though lol)

Haha. I HAVE to try this xD

My dad once thought that someone calling for my mum was a telemarketer and told the person on the phone my mum had emigrated to Australia. Of course, it was the bank calling to sort out my mums account, but it was funny as xD

When a telemarketer called here I just said "Oh hang on someone is at the door" and ill just put the phone down somewhere and leave it there for 5 minutes … Most of the time they hang up but a couple of times they have waited :/

I dont care I just hang up when that happens

Damn marpis for going to the dark side! Usually when I pick up the phone to a telemarketer, I just put the phone straight back down.

My phone has the digital clock thing to say how long a call lasts, and the telemarketers that call here always take a while to answer after you say "hello". I give them 3 seconds, which is actually a really long time to wait after saying hello, and if they pick up I will listen then tell them I'm not interested. If they don't pick up I say "TOO SLOW MUTHAFUCKA" and then hang up.
