Hobbit's Daily Puzzle

Hobbit

2010-06-01 20:26:11

Okay, so here is the deal.
Every day I will post a new puzzle along with the previous days solution.
I will keep a score and who knows, you may win a prize ;)
To score a point you must be the FIRST one to post the MOST CORRECT solution.

SCORES:
  1. Method - 4
  2. J_Pizzle - 1
  3. Nava2 - 1
  4. mrpickle - 1
  5. sgt soul - 1
  6. Tad - 1

DAY 1:

Q: Find two of the three words which can be paired to form an anagram of one word which is a synonym of the word remaining.
EXAMPLE:
LEG - MEEK - NET
LEG + NET = GENTLE
GENTLE is a synonym of MEEK
  1. BIDS-SEE-TOO
  2. VEERED-WEAK-TAN
  3. SIT-HIND-POORER
  4. OUT-KISS-SCALE
  5. POST-SLAP-AIDE

A: 1. Bids + See = Besides = Too
2. Tan + Veered = Enervated = Weak
3. Sit + Poorer = Posterior = Hind
4. Out + Scale = Osculate = Kiss
5. Slap + Aide = Palisade = Post

DAY 2:

Q:In 10 years time the combined age of two brothers and two sisters will be 100. What will it be in 7 years time?
A: 88

DAY 3:

Q: Find the next number in the series: 199 280 344 360 396
A: 477

DAY 4:

Q:The number 3025 is a rare number that has the ability to be split in half, the two halfs added together and squared, to result in the original number.

Ex:
30+25=55
sqr(55) = 3025

Name the only other 4 digit numbers to do this
(Hint: there is 2)
A: 2025 & 9801

DAY 5:

Q: Which circle goes at the top?

A: C

DAY 6:

Q:
Insert a 3 or 4 letter word (as indicated by the number of *) into the brackets that when added onto the end of the first word and the begining of the second word, form a new word.

ARC (***) RING
ARC (HER) RING
Archer herring

1. TAIL (****) WAY
2. FEED (****) BONE
3. DRY (****) YARD
4. CHAIR (***) KIND
5. BRUSH (***) SIDE
6. BELL (***) FRIEND

A: GATE / BACK / DOCK / MAN / OFF / BOY

DAY 7:

Q: Hostility , Intermezzo, Joyfully, Heifer, Fiddlesticks, Lockjaw

What word will logically come next:
  • Publisher
  • Racehorse
  • Tormentor
  • Galantine
  • Cantabile
  • Whimsical

A:Galantine - Each words starts with the letter whse position in the alphabet coincides with the number of letters in the preceding word. Lockjaw has 7 letters, G is the 7th letter of the alphabet.

DAY 8:

Here is a simpler one :)

Q: A committee of six is to be formed from a group of seven men and four women. How many different committees can be formed if at least two women are always included in each committee?
A: 371

DAY 9:

Q: 100, 90, 84, 74, 63, 53, 43, 33. What number comes next?
A: 22 - Count the letters in the number and subtract that from the original number. OneHundred = 10 letters. 100-10=90

DAY 10:

Q:One man can mow a cricket ground in 2 hours.
Another man can mow a cricket ground in 3 hours.
Another man can mow a cricket ground in 4 hours.
Another man can mow a cricket ground in 5 hours.
Another man can mow a cricket ground in 6 hours.

If they all worked together over the same area at their respective speeds, and assuming they did not obstruct each other, how long would they take collectively to finish the job?
A: 41.4 Minutes

DAY 11:

ill walk you through it

In 10 years time the combined age of two brothers and two sisters will be 100.

each set is separate two brothers are separate from the sisters

that mean that each person is 50 and 3 year before they were each 47

47 + 47 = 94

That sounds awfully wrong.

I've come to the same answer as Nava, Sex & Canadaman.
I'll put the reasoning in white text.. if you wish to read it..

In 10 years, the combined age of 2 brothers and 2 sisters will be 100

Now, as it is 4 people, in 10 years they will have aged a total of 40.

Therefore, their combined age right now must be 60.

In seven years, their age will be:

60 + 4*7 = 88.

The Claw

Boreas

Other problems from the same source don't seem to use tricky wording, so I would take it at face value.

Sex

2010-06-03 00:12:05

I did it like this.
100/4-3*4=88
100 divided by four because four people.
-3 because 10 years - 3 years equals seven years.
Multiply by four because 4 people.

or

100-(3*4)=88
3*4 because 10-7 is 3 and four people.

Q: Find the next number in the series: 199 280 344 360 396

Method

2010-06-04 10:54:13

My guess is 477.

edit: Here's an explanation of how I came to my answer (highlight over if you're interested):

If you take a look at the differences between each number, you'll notice that they're all perfect squares. Taking the square root of these numbers gives you the middle number in each of the three digit numbers in the series. From there, you can deduce that the difference between the last number listed and the next, unknown value in the series will be nine squared, or eighty-one.

Doesn't it depend on the amount of batteries produced?

If you have 10 batteries, there is no chance that 3 will be defective, but if you have 100 batteries, there is X chance. And so on.

No, in order to find the percentage (0-1):

There is either spoiled or not spoiled. This is a binomial distribution (Either success or failure). The chance (P(X=r)) is equal to C(N over R)p^r(1-p)^n-r

Where X is equal to the amount of successes.

So in this, the success can be considered to be a battery failing, which is 0.1

But for it to work, you need N, which is the number of trials.

Without it, you wont find the answer, says my equation. Perhaps I overthought it.

If he did, then nevermind. I think I figured you would be taking one battery at a time (out of 100, let's say), so the chance of finding a defective battery would decrease if you picked one each time (10/100, then 9/99, then 8/98). I used those numbers to calculate my probability.
