We're destroying our planet

The Claw

2010-05-30 22:37:03

Global warming, capitalism, hole in the ozone layer, internet censorship, deforestation, religion, fucked up laws, famine, segregation, racism, sexism, "democracy", people taking advantage of those worse off than them, AIDS, disease, surveillance, natural disasters without relief if it doesnt profit (hurricana katrina for example), and thats just the tip of the iceberg.

This isnt fun, its a near dystopia. And it's all our parents fault. ;)

What are we gonna do about it?

inb4 people pick one or two points to argue about, fact is these are just some of the great problems we're facing at this point in time. Disease kills, medicine fixes, we stop it by getting better at medicine.

Edit - Yep, I mean humanity. :)

WOW really? there something called extremists, not all Muslims is like that…there are a billion Muslims in the world from different nations around the world so you want just want to disappear or change their religion? Not going to happen (your comment sounds like Hitler, blaming the worlds problem on a specific group's beliefs)…Islam is a peaceful religion and these "extremists" are clouding your minds. All religions have their elements of peace and violence, the key is seeing each in each religion. Everyones hatin' on islam atm because its external to most of us (different parts of the world), soon it will move to the western religions too. But lets not turn this thread into an anti-religion thread. ;)

Would a 1-world government and a 1-world religion focused completely on love and the good of the people stop war, perhaps? Most wars are in the name of either territory or religion, and achieve nothing except pain and suffering.

Sure, Islam is peaceful. All religions preach peace to some extent. That doesn't keep practitioners from being war-like and killing each other. I should really be ranting about the leaders who bend Islam to their will, but leadership, even though it can be changed, often does not change its "motion". You can remove the leader, but everything will still be going a certain way.

Religion in general should be abolished. All it has done is kill people. Islam just seems to be more of a problem.

See? If you had insulted Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism (which used to be extremely bigoted, Hebrew is one of the two languages to have a word for everyone *except* Jews; it translates to "Barbarian"), etc, they wouldn't have really even cared, but for most Muslims there's this disproportionate sense of self-worth coupled with their religion. Sure, you can believe what you want to, but don't force it on everyone. (Religions are like dicks: Don't whip it out in public, no one wants to see it; Don't shove it down people's throats, especially not children's.)

Someone smart once said something like this: If I decide to hit, or perhaps, kill a man myself, then I must be prepared to accept moral responsibility. If I give my government the right or the means on my behalf to kill people of another country then the situation is no different. I must again, myself, take moral responsibility.

I think it's probably more proper to say that it only has the potential to succeed, not necessarily that it will succeed.

You're referring to the "Christ"? Well, I had a research project due a while back on anti-Semitism. There were some pretty big tears way back when. Hate has been with us since we started… To cease hate? Well, I won't lie, that would be awesome. But I'm a mathematical guy, and everything has to balance.

'Hate before us' + 'Hate when humans developed' = 'Hate today' + 'Hate after us'

I'd have to say that the hate before and after us are both 0, and the other 2 vars balance as well… So I'd have to say to eliminate hate, you have to eliminate us :/

I agree, it is the biggest issue. It's a non issue once people realise for themselves that it's a non issue. We're all the same organism (the human race), living in the same place, fucking it up for ourselves over the abitrary, society-and-self imposed differences some people still believe in. Agreed with the moral responsibility, too. Edit - I wasn't referring to cultural differences, such as music, art, etc. I mean the differences which propel people to do what they think is best for themselves or their country, rather than the human race as a whole.

You have to eliminate the part of the human/society which nutures hate, the ego. Why hate when you can love? I think there will always be tears, by people who don't have the "understanding"/still corrupted by greed. But they will become smaller and smaller, as more people realise.

R0b0t1

Yes. Simply because every human wants to better himself and his offspring (that's why eunuchs [castrated servants] were used for more than just tending the harems, they had less incentive to assassinate whoever was in charge because of having no means to produce offspring, or so I heard).

Ok, so everyone seemed to focus on the second part of this statement. But what about the first?

I think that as soon as humans become too burdensome to the world, we will be destroyed by the world. Disease is a part of natural selection. War is a part of natural selection. Well, something's bound to happen. Most likely, the human race will fall apart before the world does.

Oh, yeah, we are destroying our environment. But we're also destroying ourselves. What are we gonna do about it? Read Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. It's pretty good ;)

Then I suppose that's what you're trying to get across in this thread…

Essentially, that: "How are we going to eliminate the ego of man?"

If you're looking for an answer, you'll only find it with yourself. Can't have an ego to cure the human "ego" problem, right?

Not quite. The how isn't much of a problem, I suspect, because its like a rolling stone - the more people who realise, the more people who will realise. It's what comes after the transformation/"snap" that matters: the fixing of the planet.

I really think the only way change can occur is by combating ignorance. Too many people just don't understand enough about what is happening around them and how they are all affected by it.

Whats not helping is the fact that current education (at least in America) is a fucking disgrace. Throughout my schooling… no one could ever tell me what the "point" was. We go to school to memorize a bunch of bullshit in order to score well on some exams which allow me to go to college (meanwhile get put into debt by student loans) so I can get a degree and get a job to work for most of my life…

If we could focus education away from this plug and chug mentality and direct it towards the actual "point" of learning we would be taking a step in the right direction to social changes.

Well, I suppose that's easy enough. Let the human race realize how self-centered it is… Then following that, fix all the problems. The concept's easy, but…
Simple example almost everyone here can relate to: Say a scripts outdated and you want to make it workable. You are going to, more than likely, patch it, rather than re-do it completely. You're suggesting the latter, I think. It's just not like us to restart. Just like the U.S. Legislature just passes new laws to patch this broken system. Of course it will never be fixed, unless it is built up from the ground anew. I'm just saying, it's not likely that humans are going to rebuild everything; we're just gonna patch and update each leak as fast as we can, and cross our fingers it doesn't break completely.

Yep but thats the way we've been doing it for hundreds of years - patch after patch after patch. And look where its got us. But it's only through the false that you can find the true - this was a good attempt (a very very good attempt :p), but drastic changes are needed.

In ~500 years there will be no signs of life on earth.
All it takes is one massive nuclear war and the whole planet will be under one, big nuclear fallout.
For the next 100 years from now, nations will fight for food and fresh water, africa will be nearly empty. After 200-600 years, Canada, northern Europe and Russia will practically be the only places fit for human living. Of course, that will cause even more crisis about who has the right to live and where. Billions of people immigrate from southern europe, asia, africa, america to northern countries. This will sooner or later result in a nuclear war, taking into account bombs' power and technology is always a step ahead of other technology.

This is honestly how I think it will go. Maybe it will take 1000 years, but that's just another 0.025% of the earth's current age (approximately). After the fallout it will take several thousands of years and some other form of life conquers earth again. At this time human race is history, unless we first start first cities on Mars. Making the air breatable should take 100 or 200 years.

EDIT: Oh, I missed your point. Actually, we could destroy the planet itself with todays weapons. Wouldn't even be that big of a project really. I don't think that's impossible.

Yea, the problem is that viruses and bacteria evolve in matter of days. Stopping all diseases is not even a good goal to go for, a little flu every few years just makes us stronger, literally.

R0b0t1

2010-05-31 19:06:44

It doesn't actually physically make us stronger. It just heightens our resistance to disease (temporarily).

Living underground could be done, but would probably have long-term evolutionary consequences to humans. We'd become cave creatures. Literally. Our eyesight and color recognition would wane in favor of shape and movement recognition (also, our eyes would enlarge), our digestive system would change (more slowly) to specialize in the digestion of mosses and lichens and fungi, etc. Our metabolisms would eventually slow down due to decreased food supplies. I mean, that really doesn't have anything to do with the discussion, but still.

And actually, you _can't_ cure the flu. It's almost impossible given the technology that we have. The flu consists of thousands if not millions of different strains of viruses, each that we would need to find an enzyme to inhibit its replication. We can't even do that for most viruses. We rely on our immune system by stimulating it with vaccines.

I would just like to interject, that, The Claw's politics are fuelled by an excessive use of marijuana, under the intent to see God. Or so I've heard.

Don't knock it till you've tried it. :sasmokin: Also, his politics are fueled by the intent to find religion? I'm not sure how much sense that actually makes. Your post is silly.

In all honesty, LSD = cure to the world's problems.

Not really. It would be humanities ability to apply what they have learned from LSD. If humanity is unable to apply the lessons, then LSD is nothing but a recreational drug. Once you've gotten the message, hang up the phone.

i saw a picture of a guy who castrated himself last week while he was trippin on some bad acid lol

A man did castrate himself recently. However, there are far too many variables to say that lsd had anything to do with it.

His reason for doing so was that he had "monsters in his testicles." I wouldn't be surprised if he had previously sexually assaulted someone, and then realized the impact of what he had done while on the drug.

You don't just rip your balls off for no good reason.

Its pretty bare. Most of it's just "Well… This guy cut his balls off and flushed em down the toilet. Hm."

There have been a string of reported miscellaneous freakouts around the now un-sexed man's area… could just be amazing quality shit.

AIDS is a syndrome that you get after HIV. You can't just make that shit up. HIV and AIDS are not man-made.

You forgot to add the recent BP oil spill
