Preparing a Competition: How to
[indent]
Steps
[*]Choosing a Competition level
[*]Announcing upcoming competition
[*]Choosing a skill
[*]Choosing a location
[*]Choosing Requirements
[*]Starting competition
[*]Setting up grading scheme
[*]Ending competition
[*]Judging
[*]Announcing Results
1. Choosing a Competition levelA choice has to be made between JM, SRL and MSI.
A few pieces of advice:
- Don't run SRL & MSI at the same time.
The main crowd for these will be members, meaning that if you run them at the same time you'll be splitting the participants in two.
- Run whichever hasn't been run in the longest time
Not everyone is allowed to enter every competition. Let's make sure that the competition being run rotates as much as possible.
- Run JM & MSI Together
It is unlikely that there will ever be a scarcity of judges for JM competition, and MSI competition requires very specific judges. Seems viable to run the two of these together.
- Aim to always have at least one competition running
This will give members something to do the whole time - Either MSI or SRL competition
2. Announcing upcoming competitionThis is just for marketing purposes. Pre-Announcing it ensures that more people are likely to read it and therefore be on the look-out for the competition(s).
3. Choosing a skillYou will then have to choose a (runescape) skill on which to have the competition. For MSI competitions you may choose several of them.
Here's some advice on how to go about it:
- Free to Play
When choosing between F2P and P2P the choice is obvious. There are fewer people who have P2P on their accounts, and even fewer who are willing to risk a ban on a P2P.
- Lack of scripts
To put the competitions to good use, it would be a neat idea to make the competition on a skill that lacks scripts - that means that after the competition this skill will no longer have a lack of scripts.
- Complexity of skill
A skill like Smelting is much easier to make a script for than for Mining. Depending on the competition and what your aims are, different skill complexities will suit the competition better.
- Profitability
Try to choose a skill which has low costs of entry and that has at least a little bit of profit, for the training method to be sustainable.
4. Choosing a Location"location, location, location" - ahmed the dead terrorist (Check youtube ;) )- Free to Play
- Bankable / Collectable
Scripts that return a profit are always best. They allow you to auto longterm / indefinitely. When choosing a location make sure you have a bank nearby or that you can stack whatever loot you're getting.
- Walking
Walking is one of the hardest parts of the script to tune to perfection when done with color. You can use this to distinguish a great scripter from an average one.
5. Choosing Requirements- JM Competition?
JM Competition has a few somewhat obvious requirements - Those seen as needed to be an SRL Member.
- Making it challenging
You can add requirements to add an extra challenge to the competition:
- Banking + PowerSkilling
- Only using a total of x Custom Functions (better use of SRL include)
- Getting all possible objects (eg mining all rocks rather than just iron)
- Uncommon features
Those are just a few ideas.

How about… Rimmington Yew chomper?
The options in F2P are very limited, but I understand we can't require P2P.
EDIT: Oh nevermind, definately too hard for Jr competition. Hmm…

I say we do SRL member competition.
Jr Members have SRL member rank to look up to/as reward for scripting, and we most likely won't gain anything (a good script) from the outcome. Jr members can just read tuts and learn to script get work on getting SRL Member status.
Most SRL members make their script to get in, and then stop. Many can script well, not maybe not enough for developers, and unlike Jr members have nothing to look up to (besides Devs which many don't have the confidence/skill for). SRL Members therefor have the talent, but have no motivation, and the winning script (and even some of the losers) will give us a GOOD script that will actually benefit the community.
So I think for sure we should do SRL Member/MSI scripting competition, so we get a gain for the community overall.
F2P Script for sure.
We have POMS for essence, RCRB for Rune Crafting, Coh3n's scripts for most aspects of wood cutting, my powerminer for… powermining, two guild miners, MSI and all ifs niceness, GE Arsonists, and TaraJunky's chicken killer. (That's pretty much most of the up and well running scripts)
At SRL we strive to blend in and auto with dignity, what helps us do that, NOT being level 3s. Tarajunky's chickenkiller is amazing, I love it as do many people. Most people train with that until 30+ combat, and use feathers as starting money for their armies, but it comes to a point where we need to be higher levels to blend better (like the mining guild), and chickens just don't suffice after a certain level. Therefore I think the competition should be to make a fighter, either for a specific monster/location OR an AIO fighter for anywhere.
Options: Guards in any tons, Goblins in Port Sarim, Rats under Varrock, Various monster in Varrock sewers, The 'man house' in Edgeville, Various cow locations, or any of your guys' favorite fighting spots.

I think we'll start by JM & MSI competiton ;)
We've got enough judges for both, and the MSI SL team works extremely well. This means all devs (excluding the ones who judge) will also be able to participate in the competition.
As for what, for JM it'll be something simple,
For MSI it'll most likely include multiple skills And/Or locations
What exactly each competition will be… dunno. We'll figure that out later. I want to finish writting this guide first :p (up to step 6 at least)

They can participate in the SRL ones? It may be better to restrict them to MSI seeing as it will be more complex. I wouldn't want some of the members to be up against devs.

I know you said worry about it later, but I think a fighter is good. Specifically, here:
It's a rat pit with A LOT of rats. Probably not a bad script to use after a chicken killer. :) Should be simple enough as it doesn't require any walking.

That's good, but we have to be careful to make it doable in the amount of time we give them.
E: I just read the other thread that said Devs can't be in the SRL comp. :D

Yup, Devs at MSI only.
As for the rat pit: For JM competition we should have walking, as that is one of the "main" criteria to enter members ;) We'll see. I love that rat pit although it got me banned :p

Nahh, I don't think many would use the rat fighter. VEM or VWM would get more attention. Autoers training fighting will most likely use rsbot with reflection looting etc.

Wasn't there a rat fighter back in the day that was one of the most popular scripts?

Ratz by fawki. Not THAT popular iirc. But pretty damn good indeed.
However, it included getting meat from rats, cutting down a tree and cooking the food when needed, etc.
A hybrid script of sorts could do for an interesting competition…
edit: I think for JM competition Air Crafter would be perfect. Walking on the road, lvl 1 RC, small quest to do, should be easy enough and show enough skill. Also there haven't been any aircrafters since the altar changed location.

Oh I didn't know there was that much more to it. :p
I think we have to be careful for the Jr. Comp. I mean, there are a lot of people that get discouraged if something doesn't work right, and I wouldn't want people to drop out. As long as the walking isn't too complex it should be alright.

It's pretty much road walk. Shouldn't be too much of a problem; Although we need to get those updated autocolors out to public!

I think that any runecrafter should be good
make the only alter requirement air and then have the JR members decide individually if they would like to add more
now im not saying it should be an aio rcer but make it so you can get mroe points or something with each location you add depending on the quality of the work
if that doesn't make sence just ask and ill explain better
im tired right now lol

They need to be tested again before committed. I haven't tested them since they were written.

Everyone has the choice of adding extra features as long as they have what's required.
