While I think that it is a silly and archaic "rule" not to be able to draw Mohammed, it seems a little unnecessary to go and intentionally piss off muslims.
What does it accomplish other than more conflict? If they're stupid enough to get pissed off about a cartoon, obviously they aren't smart enough to realize what they're doing is idiotic when you directly confront them (aka by drawing Mohammed a shit ton).
Even if you find religion/a religion silly/ridiculous why intentionally hate and be a douche?

I think you're a bit off there, king. First of all, the people who take part in it tend to do it to show that they should be able to draw anything at all. Any deity, any color, and plant; any thing. It's (usually) not to just bash the Islamic religion, but for the people who do it just to bash, they'll either die immature or grow up some day.

I understood exactly what you meant; I was trying to say that they are not the same thing (admittedly in an immature and very incomplete way).
Ever since the Danish cartoons incident, the media has been censoring itself in fear that if it were to somehow insult Islam, innocent people would be harmed. This kind of censorship is much more dangerous than government censorship, as it is much harder to fight, since there is no single entity responsible, but rather millions of individuals. The creator of "Draw Muhammed Day" is trying to combat the huge amount of self-censorship (mostly in the media) by getting many people to stand up to the threats of the extremists by stating that they refuse to live in fear of even sometimes well-backed-up threats anymore.
In short, Islamic extremists used violence to scare people into not offending their religion, and "Draw Muhammed Day" is a completely nonviolent and legal "retaliation." Is it the best way to stand up to them? Probably not, but it's a start…

so by offending all of the Islamic people, you wish to hurt or retaliate to the extremists… that makes little sense. by saying that, you are saying that all muslims are extremists; or they are just being a douche to millions of muslims so that they can retaliate to a few.

I will not participate in this event, but not because of the muslims or whatever, because I am not a good artist. But, to reinstate my point, why should I care about there religion, what they believe in and what the think is good or bad? I do not follow that religion, I do not follow any religion, therefor I could not care less about what they think.

Do some research. Islam does have free speech, but it all stays under the compliance of the sharia law and Gods law and prophet Muhammad's Suna.
We dont draw the prophet Mohammad because we have respect for him and Honor for the mercy her brought Humanity. Unlike Christians.
Extremism in Islam is caused by oppression, so in that case you can thank Israel AND America.
Look if you guys want to go draw our Prophet because you guys want to, then go ahead, but dont do it so…publicly and affect the peaceful Muslims. Deal with God in the hereafter.

Long post. Directed at cycrosism.
You should care because it affects the world, cycrosism. Honestly. Take this into some thought. :) I'm not bashing you or anything, I know exactly what you mean. I was like you until about.. yesterday.
I have a question for you, though. :) Why shouldn't you care? This isn't about just a single person or a single action or anything, this is about a whole religion, one way or another. You can view it as a way to bash Islamic people, a way to express free speech, or just something to do to show that you're deity is different. I assume you view it from the "bash religion" point of view (to some extent, I hope you will admit it), and so I will focus on that, rather than free speech or showing your beliefs.
While you are an atheist, I don't believe that you understand very much about religion at all. I don't think you know why people are religious, nor why people have (and always will) have some sort of religion in their life. To quickly sum this up (and it is not a very easy thing to sum up the logic behind religion, and so I expect I'll do a less than decent job, but I hope you get the idea), religion is a way to rationalize the unknown. Why do you think people make religions? Because they're bored? No. Of course not. And I don't think you think that, by the way. They were made to keep people at ease. "What happened to Mommy, Daddy?" If you were asked that question by your child, and weren't aware of what you are aware of today (perhaps she died of a fever, an infection, or anything at all, really), what do you think you would have to explain such events? "Well I don't know. Maybe she just decided to stop breathing, moving, and loving you just because she was lacking excitement. Yeah, and for some reason, she won't ever move again, and if you cry and scream and hit her and have a desire for her to be back, nothing will happen." Well in many cases, supernatural beings were used to understand death (something that we still can't know for sure what happens after it), and many other things.
Also, think of "cavemen." I hope you know that they worshiped things religiously, as well. For example, if you were a simpler human, didn't have language, and weren't aware of all of life and it's wonders, how would you ever explain the sun, daylight, darkness, rain, the ocean, fire, lightning, thunder, etc.? I usually use the sun for an example. It is a large ball that emits heat and light, and it resides in the sky, where it is unreachable. If you look at it, it is painful to you. And every day it goes away, and every morning it comes back, right on time. I don't see how you can object to that being logical to them to think that the sun was some sort of supernatural being (especially since if they looked directly at it, it was painful to them. They may have very well believed that this was because they were lesser persons than their deity; the sun). And on top of that, the sun gave them heat, warmth, and (without them knowing (probably)), grew their food. So, although it was a hurtful thing, it also kept them comfortable, and it was something that they could always trust, as it would be above them every single day that they were alive (and even for millennia afterwards).
I'm not just rambling on (mostly) by the way. I just don't think you understand why religion is, has, and always will be, a part of life.
Anyway, now that you (hopefully) understand that, maybe you'll understand why it's both foolish and time-wasting to bash any religion. No matter what religion you dislike (in your case, all of them, or so you say), it will be part of the world for much longer than you will ever live. So if you can explain to me why you think it is in any way appropriate to do anything which is sacrilegious, and, more importantly, necessary for you to openly do, then please, go ahead and enlighten me. :) I'm not kidding by the way, I'd like to try to understand your reasoning.
So for the sake of allowing others to live a well-off, happy, peaceful life, that is why you should care about other religions. If you'd prefer to live a life of answers you deem acceptable and right, then go for it. It's not like I'm telling you to change your ways, either. I honestly could not care less what you believed, but I do care about what it is that you believe. ^^ Which is the main point that I'm getting at (you don't have to show any sign of friendliness towards a Christian, a Jew, or a Buddhist if you don't think that they're good people merely because of their spiritual beliefs (which is stupid), but you've no reason to intentionally go against a religion, unless I'm missing something here).
Sorry for the long post, but I hope you at least thought about something, cycrosism. :)
(And another thing I'd like to bring up that I find interesting is why do you have to share your (lack of) beliefs? I'm curious as to what your justification for you flaunting your atheism is (I know why I used to do it, but I didn't then), and why it's so important for you to show any sign of disrespect towards religion. According to what I know about atheism (which is quite a lot, not to sound arrogant), it has nothing to do with the disrespect of religion/religious ideology. It is merely the lack of belief in a deity. So why do you disrespect others?)

I am just saying why should I give the slightest fuck about what they want? I have to worry about my self, and there a worse things in life then to worrying about someone drawing a picture of someone. Sure they can worry about it, but I could care less about who draws Muhammad and who does not. (I am saying I could care less because it is impossible to "I couldn't care less"
I have a question for you, though. :) Why shouldn't you care? This isn't about just a single person or a single action or anything, this is about a whole religion, one way or another.
Why shouldn't I care? Because it does not effect me, and I do not care about there religion or what they think. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but that is just me, and what I think. I use to be christian and I did not care if someone was drawing Jesus.
Sure enough, it is about a single action, it is about people drawing Muhammad and I think that it is just stupid for the muslims to get angry about, when simply no one other then them cares.
While you are an atheist, I don't believe that you understand very much about religion at all. I don't think you know why people are religious, nor why people have (and always will) have some sort of religion in their life.
Peoples religion is based on there socio-culture, and both your social and cultural activities with either strengthen or weaken your faith, or in some cases do absolutely nothing at all. You know what religion does to people? It causes wars because people believe in different things. Look at the Indians and the Pakistanis - They are both basically the same, the only thing that separates them is there religion.
Yeah but come on, that was so long ago. They didn't have much knowledge of that kind of stuff so they just believe what they wanted too. But, as you can tell by the use of modern technology and stuff, there is an explanation to all of these, but there wasn't back then. There might of been for some but you get what I mean.
I'm not just rambling on (mostly) by the way. I just don't think you understand why religion is, has, and always will be, a part of life.
Yeah that may be for other peoples lives, but as time goes on many people (Mostly western civilization) will slowly lose there religion. Countries in Europe, USA and Australia are already loosing there faith in Christianity. Not people that are christian now, but the newer generations will lose it more and more. The only reason I was a christian was because of my parents, but I soon abandoned that because some things just did not seem logical, I mean believing in something that "was not there" and the explanation that is given in the bible of how the earth is created etc..
Anyway, now that you (hopefully) understand that, maybe you'll understand why it's both foolish and time-wasting to bash any religion. No matter what religion you dislike (in your case, all of them, or so you say), it will be part of the world for much longer than you will ever live. I am not disliking any religion my friend, I am just saying somethings that they do are stupid, like worrying if someone else on the other side of the world is drawing a person. How does that effect them and there everyday life? Someone they do not know is drawing someone they obviously respect but seriously cmon its not that big of an issue.
but you've no reason to intentionally go against a religion, unless I'm missing something here). Well as I stated before, it might seem like I am flaming or disrespecting another religion, but that is not my intention. What I am merely trying to do it to show you that it is not a big deal if people are drawing a certain person that another religion sees as important.
A religion (Such as catholic/christian) might not care if others in there religion are drawing Muhammad just like Muslims might not care if people in there religion are drawing Jesus. There. Sorry if I sounded harsh but that's how I deal with this stuff.
Edit: You have to agree with one of these two things: You care about people drawing Muhammad or you do not care about people drawing Muhammad.

It's hard for me to say if I care or I don't care. I surely understand why people care, but I'm trying not to be hypocritical. For example, proposition eight was a big deal that had a lot to do with Mormonism. According to Mormonism, homosexuals keep Mormons out of Heaven, so the Mormon church (in California) spent millions (billions? ;o) of dollars to not allow gays the right to marry. I understand why they're so worried (because their religion says they should be worried), but I think it isn't right to not allow someone a right based on anything other than abusing/breaking that right. (Although I personally think that marriage is silly, it's still a right that anyone and everyone should have, in my opinion.) Do I care that Mormons spent their money on disallowing gay marriage? Not really. But I do care that they have their own beliefs and that they still follow their Bible quite exclusively.
(I'm not sure if I worded that all the way I meant, but basically, I don't think it's very smart of them to use all of their money on that, but if it goes against their religion, I understand.)
And I'm not completely familiar with the Qur'an, so I can't say exactly why it's against the religion, but I'm sure kingarabian would know. :3 I'd be interested in finding out, as it seems like an odd thing for a religion (as usually gods are idolized, except for Buddhism).

Just replying specifically to what cycro said: no. You're making a really invalid assumption. Religion is not what separates Indians and Pakistani's, a big number of Indians happen to share the same doctrine with Pakistani's and visa versa.
Furthermore, we also have a different culture, different traditions, different 'Hollywood's', you name it.

You all need to grow up and respect each other's religions and beliefs. If someone wants to do "draw muhammad day" then they can do such.
Lets put it this way:
Muslims do not want their prophet drawn, or put into image in any way.
We should respect that that is how they feel about it and not be so "in your face" about it, because 99% of muslims are not crazy extremists who want to kill everyone. The media loves to portray a negative image of muslims because it brings watchers.
On the other side of the coin, non-muslims are allowed to do whatever the hell they want. If you think it is wrong, then you can choose to not be a part of it, or fight with anyone about it.
Just my two cents.

I'm just going to focus on this part right now. Just to make it clear, I am not sure what religious beliefs I have, other than I do not believe in God. I haven't really researched around to find the classification in which I would fit in.
They didn't have much knowledge back then, but are you saying that we know everything now? The
theory of gravity, the
theory of relativity, the big bang
theory. Maybe you take these theories for fact, but they aren't. We really don't know anything, we just have a lot of smart people who have good ideas that can't be proven. You can't prove that gravity exists, it is likely, but not for sure.
Maybe we can take a look at the big bang. You say that God creating the world in a week isn't real, but if you take a look at it realistically, are you going to tell me that "In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded and created everything" is a perfect explanation? No, it isn't. The theory that we are a system of billions (trillions?) of accidents and coincidences doesn't really explain what happened, just as well as the theory of God creating everything from nothing doesn't really work either.

Ideas however, live or die on the open 'market'. In a perfect world, good ideas will thrive and bad ideas will sink, through the power of rational, sceptical argument and debate. If you draw a sword to defend your idea it just shows you have no confidence in that idea.
Or to look at it another way. If you believe taxes should go up, but someone else believes they should go down, you would have a discussion about it and nobody would feel offended. After all its good for the country if both sides put forward their cases and the best one is chosen.
Same for everything else, voting Labour or Conservative, Democrat or Republican, Windows or Linux.
But if someone has an opinion on how the universe started and what humanity's place is in it. If they say their wife must cover her head and their are not allowed to use condoms. You must say "I respect that". Why? Because that's "holy"? What does that even mean?
The supposedly "free" press of the UK and America have run scared from this issue, they rightly fear that their employees will be murdered. They have to take the threat seriously because its happened before to people they know. We have the Muslim extremists to thank for this.
We cannot rely on the free press to uphold our freedom any more, a grassroots approach is needed.
This isn't about racism or islamophobia or any other buzzword you want to apply. We fully recognise that only a minority of Muslims threaten to murder cartoonists. It is about the population taking matters into their own hands and defending something very precious to them.
By the way, posting your drawing on the internet is pretty useless, you have to draw Mo in real life on a piece of paper and stick it up in a public place.

You all need to grow up and respect each other's religions and beliefs.
No we don't.
Beliefs? Maybe
Religion? No.
We should respect that that is how they feel about it
Yeah maybe YOU can respect how they feel but to be honest, I couldn't give a fuck about how they feel. That is just me. I have my own problems to worry about, why should I care about there problems?
EDIT:
"In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded and created everything"
That is like saying "In the beginning there was a giant wizard which created the universe in 6 days" Sounds pretty stupid right.

I think it's funny when people say that the atheistic view is so ridiculous that it is merely

because it's really not. And besides that, the religious way of "in the beginning there was nothing, and then a super natural being, and then the earth is the only place talked about very much, and then galaxies and solar systems and universe(s) were created from that supernatural thing that nobody can or has seen." >_>

Thread has turned into atheism vs theism again…
It's a bit counter productive since it will tend to repel the theists, and its not only atheists who should be worried about self-censorship and freedoms being eroded.

Do some research. Islam does have free speech, but it all stays under the compliance of the sharia law and Gods law and prophet Muhammad's Suna.
You can't have free speech under compliance of a law.
From: IceFire908
Sure this was funny, on south park. But wtf.. "exercising freedom of speech" was not made so you could call someone a faggot, it was made so you could criticize the government. The generations of people that died to create the world you live in would be disappointed with garbage it was handed to.
Exactly, it was made to criticize, but not just to criticize the government. Religions played a huge part in this too. I don't see the problem with this, why wouldn't you be allowed to draw something like this? By attending this ``event'', you simply show that you are unsatisfied with the way the other cartoons that all started this were rejected, it doesn't express any actual hate to the religion. At least, it doesn't have to.

Lol; south park was banned from swedish television following that episode.
However that was before they saw part2 where it wasn't muhammed in the bear costume but santa.

It's called respect? Islam doesn't allow any religious imagery in their religion, thats their doctrine.
If someone you know asked you not to do something because it would offend them you wouldn't do it, because you wouldn't want to offend them. Same principle.
EDIT:
Lol at the adverts
That is just ugly.
I think this is just stupid and at most will only help the extremists, as this will just make them hate the western world even more, and will just make it easier for them to get more people turn to their way of thinking.
I used to enjoy watching Thunderf00t's videos, but after seeing his latest ones I've lost all respect to him and unsubscribed from his channel. He used to post educational video's about science and debunking creationists arguments. Now he's just quote-mining (that "death threats from a moderate muslim" thing where he presents as if DawahFilms is giving him deaththreats, when he's clearly talking about all innocent people, not only muslims and he misunderstood Thunderf00t's video and even corrected what he meant later, yet TF still uses the same clip), spreading hate, talking as if all muslims are some evil terrorists undermining the western society and trying to offend people.
Also, I think it's kind of ironic that he has a problem with radical muslims hating the western world and it's values, yet he posts this kind of crap aimed only to offend muslims and spit on their culture and values, and clearly has no respect for islamic culture. This "they burned an american flag! let's get revenge by drawing pictures of muhammed!" is just childish, and answering to hate with hate has never done any good. I think this kind of crap shouldn't exist for the same reason we don't have "Call a black guy a n***** day! Show you have your freedom of speech!" kind of stuff either.
Also, after reading some of the comments on those videos and a few videos by patcondell I've noticed most of the commenters are really no better than muslim extremists. I especially suggest reading the comments on some videos disagreeing with TF or patcondell to see some really open-minded freethinkers in action.

GoF what do you suggest we do instead?
We allow them to continue for fear that we might get hurt or something? no, I bet you if we did that they'd just demand more and more. You remember the appeasement before the second world war? I'm very worried something like that will happen.
I wonder if you could explain why it is stupid I'm afraid I'm not convinced.
Even though you don't agree with the protesters, can you at least understand our reasoning?

I don't blame moslims of getting mad about people drawing their prophet, it's a natural reaction. Murder threats and carbombs however are not. I think everyone should have the right to draw mohammed without getting killed, but doing it just to annyoi moslims is stupid. Mohammed is an important person to some, comparable to one's mother for example. I wouldn't mind if someone drew a picture of my mother, but if that someone did it to annyoi me, ofcourse I would be upset.
The reaction to mohammed-drawings is natural but extremely exaggerated.
So atleast keep your drawings clean and unoffending.
And the extreme dudes who literally bomb places etc. do it only cause they want to rage. They have grown to rage, learned that it's what you gotta do. Most likely they get an adrenaline rush + endorphines from it, and subconciousnessly enjoy it. They are sick people being forced to it by the environment they grew up in. So they just get another chance of raging from this event.

It's certainly not that easy… You
do make your own decisions. Thinking that it's al not your choose, that it will happen anyway, anyhow, is not close to the actual truth. You know that is just hiding for your responsibility. If the environment makes the human, how could people differs so much form each others. I´m born in the Netherlands, went to school with a lot of people, still everyone has chosen a different path as me. None would act the same as me. If you put two people in exact the same positions, background, etc. Then you will still get two different people.
Radical muslims are just such a small amount of muslims, most muslims don´t even identify them as a group of the same religion as theres. I´m sure there enough priests that are at least as insane as those radical muslims. Terrorisme is not even a real problem, we attacked them, we are fighting at there lands for oil! Terrorisme is there only way to strike back. People do odd things when under great danger, complete ignored by the rest of the world, cause that huge land, called the US has to be buddys with all western lands. You´re with them(Israel,Netherland,UK,etc) or against them(Iraq,Vietnam, Afghanistan, etc). It's very black/white.
Desperate humans seems to become more active religious. They try to find things that they can hold, something the Western oil consuming lands cannot take from you, something that has survived many wars and will provide guide how to handle this situation. Than WHY DO WE HAVE TO INSULT THEM BY IGNORING SOME OF THE SIMPLE RULES OF THERE RELIGION?? It's not done by accident, nor would it give us any positive effect if we draw there prophet.
The argument that pope is a better dude than there radical muslims is wrong. The pope kills thousands of people with his statements, like no abortion and such! He is a die hard criminal claiming he can communicate with some sort of god, BULLSHIT!
Religions, its the most powerful tool a bad person can use to convince a great group of people that aggression is needed.

was it? I didn't know exactly what to expect before this.
There could have massive protests in every major city in the western world, there could have suicide bombings everywhere.
It could have also happened that muslims just ignored us.
Neither of those things have happened yet. It is a great victory for the secular enlightened world that the most high profile thing that happened was that the Pakistani government banned facebook, youtube, wikipedia and about 400 other sites.

I guess, but the countless lolocaust jokes and the sort were clearly visible in the "draw Mohammad day" group. And I read quite a few comments already hinting about creating some sort of anti-Jew group as retaliation :)
As for no bombings occurring, well I just don't think they'd kill themselves in protest over people they can't get to…(anonymous xD) yet.
