Ok, so i got a PS3 which has a broken disk drive. I want to know is there a way to mod it without a chip, so that i can play from a harddrive, or is there a way to install some other os to it so i can do something cool with it :) Any ideas etc for fixing the driver or modding or anything useful to do with it are welcome :)

Ok, this is different looking then one ps3 my dad has. Any idea why? The theme is different, but the layout is different too.

is either one updated/not updated? connect to the internet and update them both.
Maybe there are layout options you can change? I've spent a grand total of like 3 minutes on a ps3

Well, they took out the OS feature on the new update. There aren't really any mods yet. Basically, you can't do anything. Is it a slim?
Edit: You can install different themes/layouts from custom made ones on the internet or PS store ones.

Nope, a basic PS3.
I guess you're out of luck then. But, you can buy Playstation games off the PS store. Classic PS1, some PS3 games, or regular arcade games. See if you can downgrade to a earlier update to install a second OS. Some people on youtube have Linux on it. If I remember correctly, someone on here has it also.

I have linux ubuntu on mine but I can't access it anymore because my ps3 is fully up-to-date.

As far as the drive goes, you can ship it to Sony to fix for like, $160.
I acquired a free PS3 and plan to do this. I tried everything to fix the broken drive, but it seems the blu laser diode is dead.
I haven't the slightest clue in modding a $300 machine

There is a way to hack into the device, though I have no clue how. I imagine it'd be alot like the Iphone Jailbreak, if I recall correctly both are setup semi similar (I've spent maybe 30 seconds on a PS3, so don't quote me). But it'll be alot of work, so probably not worth it. But if you're interested, I'd join Blackra1ns IRC, as a few OPers there were (last time I was there, was a couple months ago though) working on something similar.

You probably need the malformed working drive for that xD.

^Lol I knew that Xp.
Though he could still theoretically mount the HD he wanted to use, mod it, and plug it into the PS3. I just read what he said differently I think? I'll blame the drugs though :p
