SRL Archive - Reflection Discussion

Reflection - The Administrative side

Hey guys, quick thread.

Reflection died. It's now coming back (from the looks of it).

Here's my question: How could a staff member ensure that it does not die again?

The main points that I find crucial are knowledge and commitment.

As for knowledge:

Can the knowledgeable people post a thread with some general information on where to look for what?
Can any noob-friendly java tuts be posted? (DONT link me to javadocs)

As for commitment:
Who currently has admin access to the google svn?
Who are the inactive devs?
Who are the active ones?
How about pruning it?

Adding on to that - here's a suggestion - for svn admin access, I suggest you add some of the more longterm/active SRL devs/admins. That'll ensure that someone will always have admin access.
I'll be posting my own google account if you follow up on this idea.

As for structure:
How can the reflection forums be improved?
Taking them out from under SMART forums and putting them on their own?
Would Ref Devs benefit from a small dev only section?
- This could be used to vote on new devs
- And to post things such as updaters, without being to the general public.
Are there any other subforums you need?
Would you like script prefixes as the ones for Pub SVN ?

Anything else that comes to your mind?
I'm making no promises for now. But I also can't do much to start with if I don't know what you would benefit from.

Hopefully no flaming against anyone will occur in here. This thread is for mutual benefit :)

I like these ideas a lot. One thing that really sparked my attention was reforming the "Reflection" section in the forums. It is currently so disorganized, I don't even want to visit it. I was thinking having it's own branch and have sections such as Reflection Scripts, Reflection Scripting Help, Reflection Bugs, etc. And having a Public Testing, and I like the idea of a Dev Section.

EDIT:
Also it would be nice if the knowledgeable people COULD post some tutorials and things of that nature. You can not rely on MoparIsTheBest.org because everyone there is a douchebag ^^. (most everyone). It's true, it is not a noob-friendly environment.

We also can't rely on other forums having the information. Other forums could perish at any time for an amount of reasons. Also, not user-friendly to rely on other forums.

About scripts section.. Not really sure it's a great idea, I think they fit rather well in the other scripts forums?

Yah, definitely I agree on not relying on other forums.
And yes, I guess your right on that one, but definitely adding the other sections to that.

SRL.Widget, srl.method, zeph.srl, Wizzup.SRL, Narcle.srl

And there is also the Dev svn?

The biggest thing that stopped it was the Runetek engine, via new hooks. The other Java bots don't require the hooks that we need so a compiler of our own is required to get those. This is what I've read about so far.

Edit:
And the Dev one:

The other bots need the same hooks, but they they have much more people who know how to update them so they get fixed much faster

I say scrap the dev svn.
Just like SRL pretty much doesn't use the public svn and only uses the OpenDev, it's pointless to have two svns for reflection.

If anyone isn't trusted to make stable commits then maybe they shouldn't be devs.

Agreed. Two SVN's only complicates things, things get mixed up, and crap happens. I like this idea.

I thought the same, also consider a new svn because it says "scar" which won't always be the case anymore (or at all at some point).

Naike was trying to do something like this at one point, but I think Wizzup shut it down because we couldn't get the TileToMS problem solved. I pretty much quit developing after that.

Actually, they do; you just have to search. But, to get some field values, they may just invoke a method, but they don't do that much.

RSBot has all of the hooks needed for TileToMS in their injected rs client. ;)

Support it. The lack of public support could very well have been one of the reasons it has been down for so long.

Sites like RS-Hacking are better suited for client hacking tutorials/discussion, but I'm up for answering questions or helping people out with problems they're having. I just don't want to spoon feed people everything.

As for the Java tutorials, I'd recommend using the ones on the official site as they're probably the best ones out there. Buying or borrowing a book from a library or school might be a good choice also.

I have access, as well as the others Narcle listed. Everyone is inactive, and I'm not opposed to pruning the project.

I'm pretty sure Wizzup is on one of them, and I don't plan on leaving anytime soon either.

It would certainly help to make them viewable from the forum index, yes. I don't feel that any more development forums are really needed, though.

I don't really see a need for any.
