IPhone 4G leak

Mr. Doctor

2010-04-20 06:58:53

Gizmodo has managed to get its hands on the next-gen iPhone, and has posted videos and photos of the new handset. At this point we’re pretty much certain it is this summer’s new model.

Our good friends at the Giz have had the handset for a week, and despite not being able to get past the “connect to iTunes” screen of any new iPhone, they have fully documented it and even opened the thing up. Somebody at Apple is in big trouble.

The rear case is, as we saw this morning, flat and shiny. It seems to still be plastic, though, rather than ceramic or glass as rumored (the Giz folks aren’t sure), and the chassis and sides of the body are aluminum. There is a front-facing video-conferencing camera, a high-res screen (which is such “high quality that it was impossible to discern individual pixels”) and a micro-SIM slot, mimicking that found on the iPad. This slot is on the side, moved from the top.

There is also a bigger camera lens and a flash. No, not that Flash – a camera flash, and also a second microphone for noise cancellation, like that on the Nexus One. The other major changes are that two round volume buttons replace the previous rocker-switch, and the whole case is thinner than the current iPhone 3GS.

Inside, many of the parts are proper Apple components, and they have been shrunk to make room for a bigger battery. When hooked up to iTunes or Apple’s developer tools, it also identifies itself as an iPhone. In short, it looks like the real deal.

Like we said, somebody at Apple will be getting into trouble over this. The prototype was lost in a bar in Redwood City, and was sat inside a custom case which makes it look just like a 3GS from the outside, complete with custom cut-outs for reaching the new hardware controls. Apple certainly wanted to keep this one a secret. We believe that this might be the biggest leak from Apple that we have ever seen. It is also a hot-looking iPhone. Keep reading for more pictures of Apple’s new iPhone.

i second that.

If it really was found in a bar, how did gizmodo get their hands on it? I understand they could have, but what are the chances.

Nevertheless, it looks much better than 3gs.

Yep. I bet 95% of Apple's company is marketing anyway. (Microsoft has similar numbers)

It defiantly wasn't a leak, it was left on purpose. Just like Harry said, just for marketing.

I read somewhere that Gizmodo bought it for 5,000 from the guy that found it.

I'm still not 100% convinced that its real but it looks pretty nice and the added features sound good.

Well I don't know if you know about Apple's security policies.. Products bolted to test benches, men in black, access codes that change every few minutes… A few months ago, some Chinese worker committed suicide because Apple accused him of leaking.

Lets start by saying that nothing changed really between the 4G and the previous versions.
At least nothing really big.

Once iPhone supports flash player, that would be a big change.

The 4G seems much weaker than previous versions.

This was in the Israeli newspaper this morning. So I'm guessing this is real, Steve Job's picture was near it, didn't read it, but I'm guessing he said something about it, so there was probably a quote in there or something.

I just read like the first paragraph which said that the employee who left it was found. The iPhone was found in a pub.

So I doubt it was left on purpose.

lakerzz8

2010-04-21 16:24:28

How is it weaker? It seems to have a larger battery (therefore larger battery life), front-facing camera, higher resolution screen, a noise-cancellation mic. What about it seems weaker?

Edit: I guess I misread what you were saying. You were just quoting the paper.

Weaker meaning in strength if fallen.
Many of my friends don't buy an iphone because it's very weak. (Physically)
I should have said breakable or fragile instead - sorry.

I dont see why every one rages over that apple shit.
For America SRL peeps: Take a look at the Sprint Evo 4G that is comming out in the next two or three months. It has a 4.3' touchscreen with proper multitouch. 8MP Camera that records 720p movie. It has a 1.3MP front facing Camera. 1GHz Snapdragon processor (same as in the nexus one). HDMI output. The first 4G phone in the US. HTC Sense. FlashPlayer. Dual Flash LEDs for the Camera.
Android, so multitasking. e..t..c….

I dont see why the iPhone is 'AWWW YEA THE IPHONE, I JUST ACCIDENTLIED MY PANTS'

@Bobbo: It isnt a much better phone. It doesnt even have full multitasking. Just certain 'services' can be run in backround.
@Mysterious: Apple will NEVER support flash nor java. Period.

^ Yup. Apple won't support Flash unless they change everything about it.

Sprint was not the main idea of my post..Nor was a carrier-battle. I was just talking about hardware and software.

Not a marketing ploy. Apple wouldn't sacrifice its 'innovations' for marketing. The entire marketing game is centered around putting out a new product before the competition can get something equivalent out the door. Now that everyone's seen it, other phone manufacturers will be able to use their favorite bits of the design.

The only thing I see coming out of this is a quicker iphone 4g release, in an attempt to save some of their advantage.

I forgot your phone is what makes you unigue, especially if the whole world buys them. :)

E: Why are Apple products unique? IMO they are mainly just recreating software with different branding. The iPod is in no way unique. It plays music, and that's all it can do. I've had music players YEAR before the iPod came out. The App Store? I've used package managers for years, nothing new.

Ok, imagine if the Evo was going to att.. how would it be?
(att ceo said there is no 4g until at least 2012 :p)

Bobbo: The iPhone is not unique in any fashion. There were plenty of smart phones, and smart phones with touchscreens, out before the iphone came to market. Windows mobile and palm ruled the market at that time.
The iPhone is popular because it is simple to use and marketing is not aimed towards buisness men.

Can any one tell me how the iphone is unique, comparing it to other phones?

We actually had a discussion on the irc a while back regarding the iphone and updates.
When the iphone first came out, it was missing 3g. Can you believe that?
Apple has left out both large and small details that they have been able to easily upgrade to and successfully market. The coming of 3g, the coming of multitasking, etc

I don't know…with the iPad just released and the 4g expected out in the next year or so, I can see that number getting close to doubling. If the 4g has better graphics and is faster, that will enable a whole new kind of app.

The info I could find said the app store for Apple had 185,000 apps as of April 8th.

The android app store or whatever had under 50,000 just 20 hours ago. It has a long way to go if it will catch up. And its not like the Apple App store will stop growing.

I was going to say within my post leave out that app store, but I didnt think that was too fair, because that is what makes the app store. Android has 50k applications in it's market, and Android has been out for less than two years. The iPhone has been out for 3+ years. There are lots of different smart phone OS's with markets/stores. Just because apple has the largest store does not make it unique.

I'm talking about the phone's hardware and operating system. Not third party software.
Speaking of third party software, you can download packages from external sources (not from the market) and install it on the phone.

The apple app store will stop growing because every thing that can be made for the iPhone, has been made or is in development. Oh, and developers are starting to get tired of Apple refusing their applications for stupid reasons. Ex: "Oh there is a girl in a bikini in an article in this news paper application. NO, REJECTED"

This is where you're wrong.

-The app store is far too controlled for it to continue to grow at its current rate.
-Other manufactures are starting to come out with phones that easily surpass the iphone's hardware.
-The Android operating system is continually improving, and has huge corporations behind it.
-Apple is turning off huge amounts of developers with changes to its developer contract.
-The Android operating system is quickly finding its way onto slates as well as phones.
-The Android user base spans multiple cell phone providers.

Oh, and did I mention: you can use it how you want to

Being the largest app store does make it unique. Not counting size is like saying there is nothing unique about Starbucks offering 100 types of coffee and my coffee stand offering 1.

"The apple app store will stop growing because every thing that can be made for the iPhone, has been made or is in development. " I find that very funny. There is no way that can be true, especially with new versions of the iPhone coming out and a new OS on the way as well. It reminds me of a quote I read that the person in charge of the US patent office wanted to close it down in the late 1800s because he thought everything that would ever be invented had already been invented. There is no limit on creativity and imagination and thus there will never be an end to how many different apps one can make.

And much like the frustrated runescape fans ranting on the forums about dungeoning, the frustrated developers are most likely in the minority. There are tons of new apps coming out each day and tons of updates for existing apps. Those quitting are most likely in the minority.
