Thoughts and comments? Any insight to Fermi?

Let the :fiery: begin.

They are both really good brands, and I have tried both.

I currently have a 9800gt I brought around 2 years ago (Maybe more, 2 and a half?) and its lasted ever since.

ATI is good because it is cheap and does the job, while nvidia is a bit more expensive. AMD + ATI is good for the casual gamer or light gamer but if you are more into games then you should probably go for an nvidia card.

Nvidia has much better linux support than ATI, thus making it the only option in my mind. I have a 8800gt and a 9800gt, I got the 8800 when they first came out for $300, ha now there only $80, 8?(

Actually if you are a true gamer you should buy AMD + ATI, like AMD Phenom II X4 965 and 2 ATI Radeon HD 5970.

I have only heard that NVIDIA has slightly better driver support for SLI.
That there might be some problems with ATI's CrossFire, but I dont know if its true.

Not to get off topic but intel is so much better than AMD, AMD usta be the best when they first came out with the x2, but ever since then intel has dominated. And im not sure you have a balanced system if you have $1200 of video card with a $180 of CPU.

However most games are bottlenecked by the GPU not the CPU so it wouldn't really matter if you ran a Phenom II or an I7 since you would probably get above desired FPS anyway. :) Not sure how it is with latest games with quad support.

Not too exact, at least with a few games.

My GTX 295 was around 25 FPS on all high in BC2, until I clocked the i7 to 4.2 (default is 2.66), which I'm getting around 45 avg now.

:x 45 FPS? I get an average of 200..

As I said I wasn't sure how new quad supported games do, I've only had bad experiences with those. :(

Looks like Fermi's out.

To you peoples.

Would you pay $120 more for a card that sucks 100more watts, gives a 5-10% performance increase, and runs hotter?

Not embedded, sorta NSFW and huge. Sorta true though, so I thought I might as well post it.

Harry, I think Dx11 games is when we'll see this card spring to life.

And same thing goes for huge resolutions, this thing will hold up good FPS.

DX11 works fine on my 5xxx… they even benchmarked it on DX11 games as well, same fail. Can get more ATi power for a cheaper price.

TL;DR version is that the 480 is 10-20% faster than the 5870. However ATI will refreshing their line soon, and we will probably see the higher end ATI cards actually drop down to their MSRP. Also the 5800 series are severally held back by memory bandwidth and I bet ATI will update their line when the time comes when the next set of faster GDDR5 comes out.

However nvidia will also release a 490 come in few months? when yields become worthwhile. The 480 is actually a stripped down fermi, so we havn't even seen a true fermi card yet. (do any of us want to? the 480 is already quite the power hog and reaches 96C on load)

So while nvidia may be ahead for a little while, I expect ATI will come out and either match the 480/470 or surpass… if not come real close.

Though I doubt that concerns many, most of us can't drop 350-500$ on a GPU anyway :P.

The 512SP Fermi is unmanufacturable anyways, with what they have right now. They have to re-do a lot of things.

And yes, THG, because it's a nice site, ^_^. Though the nVid bias is unbelievable (in the articles written, not benchmarks).

I doubt there'll be a GTX495, because even the GTX470 consumes over 200Watts. ATI got away with it because the HD5870 consumes 183wats at load, so they simply backed down the clocks to HD5850 levels, but kept the full shaders (1600). nVidia CAN make a double card, it'll have to be a GTX460x2, or they'll risk running the PCI-E SIG spec.
What's funny is that the HD5970 has a TDP of 294Watts, and the GTX480 has one of 275Watts I believe. Yet the HD5970 consistently uses less power..

About ATI's refresh; they could easily hurt nVidia if they released a series of dual-GPU cards in the HD59XX series. HD5930 ($420), HD5950($500), and HD5970($550). Then a card to directly compete with the GTX480 ala the HD5890.

imo all the 5800 series needs is the refresh on GDDR5. The 5870 scales quite linearly when you overclock the memory, to bad ati didn't go with a bigger bus.

But of course, theres more they can do too :P

Stevee

IIRC, didn't they actually have a 512-bit bus? I mean, that would kick ass…

got a 9600GT, very reliable card, except its frigging high profile, just fits into my tiny mother board.
