whats the point of polls

what are the point of polling for new SRL members, if admin just decide at the end anyways?

junkj(mr doctor) was winning by 2 votes, and therefore should have gotten in, no matter his "skill level".

its just compleatly moronic that he has to wait an other 2 weeks >.>

If it's close, the admin decides. Aren't you supposed to get more than just more than 50%? I thought it was like 70 or something

Personally, I don't think one should be accepted unless he receives a vast majority (2/3) vote. And yes, as Griff said 50/50 votes should be decided by the admins (and 51/49 isn't much of a stretch).

For the record, I voted yes; my opinion is not biased.

No, it wasn't, Awkward. This isn't the first time something like this has happened.

was it?

I've seen close ones accepted and rejected from both sides in my relatively brief members period (either that, or I'm making it up)
Sometimes if the poll is barely on NO, admin over-rules and lets them in, if it's barely on YES, maybe they shouldn't get in. (again, works for all combos, if it's close either way, admin's ultimate choice.)

That's why everyone isn't an admin, lots of responsibility and judgment calls.

ok then, its always been winner period from what i have seen. :p

still, doesnt make any sence :p

Why not? In an SRL Member poll, not every SRL Member votes. In a close vote (between 50/50 and 66/33), it should be up to the Admin to decide for the remaining SRL Members, since it is unrealistic to expect every single one to vote on every single poll. Now, if, theoretically, everyone voted, and it was still 50/50ish, I think that the applicant should not be let in. Many people don't think he's ready, and the people who voted yes may have done so for the wrong reasons (of course, the same could be applicable to no votes, but better safe than sorry).

in a democracy or elections, if something is 51-49, the leaders wont decide, and the winning side will be it, unless obviously it CLEARLY states it needs to be 2/3, or something else

Well, we're not a Democracy.

In tennis, you just keep going until you are ahead by two points…That figure would obviously have to be inflated here, but really, making them reapply is the same as that, i guess. Once the regular people who usually vote do so, there really aren't that many people that go on to vote after. So making them reapply is allowing the game to continue rather than be at a standstill.

The leaders don't decide, because we are voting for a leader, so the leader deciding wouldn't really work. Here, we are voting for who gets into SRL members, so its OK if the admins get the final say.

When its close, admins decide, that's how it is, and always has been.
The point of the poll is to see what other SRL Member+ rank people think.

Bad % yes/no- Not In
Good % yes/no - Yes In
~Tie % yes/no - Admin Chooses

It doesn't really effect you, or anyone, beside the person that got in, and if there is something close like that often time an Admin's judgment is for the best, they get to choose things like that.

In a democracy the president can veto, no?

I don't see a 2/3 majority.

Maybe Junkj needs a little more time to mature, and improve on scripting anyways. No harm there.

It's not like there's much going on around here anyways.

Not the first time it happens. Not the last either.

Is this democracy? Not purely so. Do we aim to be close to democracy? Quite honestly I think we do. Only once have I seen a poll that was largely towards the Yes and an admin turned the person down. I've never seen it the other way around.

Whenever it's close to 50/50 admins will usually look at who voted for what, as each admin will recognize each person to have a more mature / better thought out vote / more in deph etc. In this case, even looking at it this way it was still 50/50. So I took the time to read the script in depth and there were way too many mistakes that voters might have overlooked as they were not absolutely obvious but showed flaws in basic scripting skills. That's why junkj was turned down.

I was shot down with a majority, and to be honest at the time I was beyond pissed off. But now that I realize how much I learned when going through the script and fixing errors, even though I missed quite a few, im glad I was denied.

Just because it's how it's always been doesn't mean it's the best method.

I think it is really stupid to be honest. I think we need to just make a set percentage that gets you in, and follow it. It's not like it's how all the admins are feeling anyways, it's just how that particular one is feeling at that time. Luck of the draw.

Now I know SRL isn't a democracy and never will be, so I know this suggestion will never happen. Thought I would post my opinion anyways though.

I don't know of any true democracies, quite really every system has checks and balances.

Think of WT-F as the president and his admins are his close advisers in junction with the the rest of the staff (mods namely) they make up the executive branch who carry out the laws lead the community. SSRL members would be considered the police.. basically.

Now you have the judicial branch, this is mostly the Developers and active/skilled scripters… they decide whether or not everything is constitutional… abides by the purpose of SRL and such. We are the supreme court basically… since we only have the power to judge.

Finally there is the legislative branch. The senate is held by renounced members, and the house of representatives probably be around SRL<=X<SSRL.

If the legislative branch only comes to a near 50/50 agreement, is it right for them to override the other two branches of government simple because they have a slight majority in the polls?

No one here at SRL is really political like the real world… decisions are much fairer. I think we are all (all the community) doing a splendid job lately on agreeing with most things, especially if you compare it to the past.

Political, aside…. telling 'Mr. Doctor' he needs another two weeks was the right thing to do, from a purely unbiased standpoint of view he wasn't worthy of membership when he made that thread, and people here are tending to challenge the decision making process rather than the actual contents of the application, which is a much less affective way of presenting a case.

I have yet to see anyone bring up credible evidence as to why the wrong choice was made, rather than all this political nonsense.

Times change, just like that percentage would change. Also, do you always put the same kind of effort when voting? Do you go through the script line by line everytime you vote? And if you do, do you think everyone else does it?

I know I don't go line by line every time. I look at the general structure, if something sticks out I look through it, and so on.

Setting a percentage assumes that people will always do their best when voting. And this is an unrealistic assumption. So when the polls come that close, it makes sense that the decision falls on one last person, as every admin has a considerable scripting level and is by far more than qualified to judge an SRL Member script app.

The polls are NOT ">50% is in". You need around 80% or more of the votes, usually.
