Discussion: What to look for in SSRL Members

Sir R. M8gic1an

Ok…. so what to look for in future SSRLers?

Keep in mind this is a place between Members and Devs / Staff.

Maybe two seperate lists would be good, although there will obviously be common points in them.

I think we should rather focus on intangibles (trustworthyness, inteligence) than on achievements (number of scripts, tuts, cups)

This post is here mostly because I agree with Dan's post on Zytex's poll and because our list is outdated and not all that good. Which is why I say we try a different approach.

So… Mod and Dev qualities?

When I read a thread I generally see SSRL member posts as "Voices of Reason", or at least as knowledgeable sources. A general understanding of the forums and the subjects therein is usually something that can be gauged to determine SSRL-ability.

I don't think we need to define it, as it would be different for each person. If it was completely defined, we wouldnt need to vote

I agree, but some people may not know what to vote for/new to SSRL.

I believe the title of this thread is "What to look for in SSRL Members" not "Define what a SSRL Member is."

However I agree this is a case by case assessment. We can look for them but you definitely can't define it. All SSRL members or those being considered will bring something different to the table. I think it would be wise to have the different thinking there that we aren't use too which to some of use puts us off to letting them join. If the intelligence, trustworthyness and maturity is there then I see no reason why not. Most in SSRL (that I know of) are in college or higher due to maturity reasons.

I agree with what The Claw has said. Someone who is being considered for SSRL needs to stand out above others (besides just having the qualities listed in JAD's thread), which, unfortunately, I don't think most of the people recently nominated do.

Nearly 100% based on contributions.

I believe the system should be based on the harder you work, and the more you contribute, the more you will be rewarded. I mean, unless you're a complete jerk, then other personal things shouldn't matter.

Why should decisions be so strongly based on a personal level? As far as I know, this place is still about getting things done and writing an effective color bot. Rewarding hard work encourages hard work. Rewarding somebody for being a "great guy" encourages great lazy people. As far as "trust/maturity issues" go: if somebody worked hard enough to get a promotion, it's unlikely they will just be stupid with their new privileges (because they obviously care about their new status), because then they will just lose those privileges.

Lets reward hard work and dedication rather than ass kissing and trying to portray yourself as a great person.

Well said.

You could be a generous and trustworthy, but I wouldn't say that's enough to move up in the community. You wouldn't get a promotion because your IQ is the highest in the company, you'd get it for the work you've done that proves your dedication.

I think SSRL = potential future mod/dev.
Actually, not only potential, but SSRL would be kind of a half-way to mod/devship.

Bad idea. SSRL isnt a "reward" for doing stuff, its an inner circle of the most trusted people in the RS cheating scene, a place to share sensitive info and have intelligent conversation. Personally I dont give a shit if someone contributes alot, as it doesnt show anything about their personality, demeanor or judgement. Just that they have an interest in programming/moving up the ranks, which is completely irrelevant to being trusted enough to be let in here.

I also dislike the halfway to mod/dev comparison. Someone could do alot of good commits/make alot of reports, but might still not have the vibe/the personality to want them in here.

For me, those are simply qualities that i think would make an easier choice for voting once they're actually nominated, but that alone wouldn't actually get them my vote.

I agree. It's the next rank in line and the only one in between. Personally I don't know much about what would get you into devship, so it might not be as necessary to put them in SSRL before deving them but, like i said, i dont know.

That being said, you'd have to allow them past SSRL rank to make them a dev. So if just because they make a lot of commits and such, as you said, that would make them a dev, then that would be it. But as i would expect, you wouldn't let them allow them to be a dev if that's all they did, so that wouldn't allow them here either. So i don't see the problem with it being halfway to dev/mod then.

As long as they aren't a douchebag, I consider them. If I see a name that rings my douchedar, instant no, no matter how good they are at scripting or their commitment. I always look for personality then to the scripting/commitment. If someone has a great personality (as in I wouldn't mind meeting them, irl [or that someone else I trust says they have a good personality]) then if they have made good scripts that are elaborate (not a couple 300 line scripts) then I will vote yes.

And the obvious longevity plays a part also. But I see this as a tight nit group of people that share some common knowledge and for the most part are a little bit more on the brighter side that others. So as long as I think someone is worthy of joining that group then I have no problem adding a chair to the round table (its a bitch though when the table needs to be made bigger, I don't have the construction level for that, haha).

More of the recent SSRL yes's I personally don't know that well, simply because they are newer and I have been out of the SCAR Scripting scene for quite some time. That is why I usually don't vote either. But when I do that is what I look for.

I didn't mean it like that would be the only thing to look for, I just meant it should be taken into consideration. Obviously, if there are two people getting polled, they contribute enough, they work equally has hard, but one is a douchbag, I'm going to vote for the one who has the better personality.

If promotions aren't mainly based off of contributions, where is the incentive to contribute? It's like a soccer team who picks people because they're really nice and cool instead of the being the best at kicking the ball into the net. If you pick your players that way, the other teams are going to be much better than you (or their end product, as in their bot will be much better than ours).

Few people would admit to this, but the core reason that top contributors here do/did contribute is to get a promotion. It's like a fun game. Become an SRL member, try to get some cups, work hard and continue working up the ranks. It's a false sense of accomplishment; like a video game.

Also "sensitive information". People act like what we do in here is so important and an untrustworthy person getting in could be tragic. What is there really to trust them with? We really haven't done anything super special and important in here recently. But if somebody works hard enough to get a promotion, they obviously care about the promotion enough to not ruin it for themselves by leaking..etc.

I sometimes wish I was part of a runescape autoing community where the main goal was being as efficient as possible in… runescape autoing.

Now if you don't believe my theory of incentives producing results: look at rsbot. They have many (pretty much) flawless scripts there. Mainly because the incentive is to make money. Now money making doesn't need to be our incentive, and never has needed to be. Accomplishment has always been the incentive, and we should promote this as best we can.

But do you pick the captains because they are necessarily the best player on the team? No, they're the people that are good at leadership, know what to do in times, can make decisions, and can be trusted by the team. As I think I already said, SSRL doesn't really get you anything special except access to higher levels of talking. I don't think there's actually much code being pushed around on SSRL level so contributors such as those wouldn't be rewarded by gaining access to SSRL anyway.

No.

RSBot has `flawless' scripts, not because of skilled peoples, but because it's easy to make a `flawless' script. SRL isn't easy, nor is it always worth it. I like to think it's here to make programmers(/scripters), not macroers.

People are here, they're scripting, but most importantly (I hope) they're enjoying themselves. I would rather SRL died than became like RSBot.

Although it may not be what other people think or the like, I don't think we need more SSRL Members, mods or admins (note need). I think we need more people who enjoy scripting - not scripters who need to be motivated at all times otherwise they don't do anything.

Usually team captains are among the best of the team. At least where I come from. There's millions of nice guys out there, but that doesn't mean they should be team captain of a swim team instead of michael phelps, just because they're nicer and more trustworthy.

So SRL is more about a group of people who enjoy programming in inefficient ways, thereby creating unnecessary challenges, instead of creating the most undetectable and dependable bot out there?

If it's not about efficiency, but more about attempting to write a bot that will never work properly/easily, why not just code in 0's and 1's?

I just miss the days where I used SRL to make my rs autoing easier. Now I don't use the SRL include at all, or the SCAR fonts, because it's easier to just avoid the head aches and use my own code.

Just becuase we dont have anything super secret in here now doesnt mean we wont in the future. We had sudoku for over a year before it became common-ish knowledge. We need people like (most) of the group then, who can be trusted which such things. Not just people who contribute. BTW I didnt contribute to gain levels/ranks to increase/enhance my ego, I contributed because I enjoyed it, which is what we want. Not someone who contributes to better their career/ego here.

Look at the early SSRL members - Bam Bam, Town, pwnaz0r are the first ones that come to mind who werent big contributers, but were still worthy of SSRL and contributed to the discussions in here. We need SSRL's like them, not just someone who does alot of work so they can increase their rank to make themselves feel good.

This whole thread TL;DR - we need Fawki or Boreas to post here for a definitive word.

You seem to be confusing things - it is needed that the leader has good leadership qualities, it is not sufficient that they do. Of course a lot of team captains are good players - if they weren't good players then they wouldn't be on the team.

So SRL is more about a group of people who enjoy programming in inefficient ways, thereby creating unnecessary challenges, instead of creating the most undetectable and dependable bot out there?

Pretty much, yes. Not everyone is happy with this way (hence the short lived reflection revolution, though it may be coming back soon it seems). However, for the most people, yes. If they didn't, they wouldn't be here when other bots `are' much easier and leacher friendly.

If it's not about efficiency, but more about attempting to write a bot that will never work properly/easily, why not just code in 0's and 1's?

Because that's not reasonable. Not only can most people here not program machine code, but the time that would go into it would be so extremely high that there probably wouldn't even be a first working version by now. Not to mention Pascal/Script is a lot simpler to learn than machine code.

Well, I don't really see why you say this. SRL does still work on the whole, just not on the same level as other bots. It can login for you, find objects for you, change tabs, drop items, aid in walking and more. That to me seems a lot easier.

What's more is that if you're dissatisfied with parts of the include, the great thing about open sauce is that you can see how it works, change it to how you work and if it works better share it with other people - something I would think you would be familiar with. Though, if you're `improving' parts of SRL and not sharing them, it does make you seem a bit peculiar.

If Michael Phelps was a stupid ass pot head who had no leadership qualities and no one liked, but was really really good, does that mean he'd be a good team captain? I don't know if that's a really good example since i don't know how much a captain for swimming would do necessarily, but more so for things like rugby or football and whatnot, you'll want someone who's good at the things i described rather than the person who is the best at coding.

For the people that are just good at coding, you look to SRL members, but since there aren't any scripts here really, it would make more sense to just keep them in members. IMO it might even make sense to inflate the SRL members rank a lot. The more people in there the more scripts you'll get in there. AFAIK, its not a very active scripty place. So if you make the member rank more focused on coding and SSRL more focused on personality, the member section will be what it's meant to be and actually be a step up from Juniors rather than just being a rank.

Now it seems that people just want to get their friends SSRL rank as some kind of a reward. I'm still againts the way a certain person was accepted here as the same people just kept posting polls over and over until he got in with like a 1-2 vote difference or so, and in my opinion that's just lame and undeserved.

I don't think we need any more SSRL members. At the moment there really isn't anything here, and if the only purpose of this rank is so people can reward their friends because "i like xxx because ive talked to him on msn and he kind of helps around the forums and has made scripts" SSRL might as well not exist, atleast in my opinion.
