Some suggested extensions:

  • .simb (The current default)
  • .simba

Any preferences, or other suggestions?

SIS is an acronym that stands for Software Installation Script. It is an installation file for Symbian OS, and not an application file, as sometimes believed; the real Symbian application is the .APP or .EXE file within it.

.simba for sure. :)

And I agree with Icefire on the .rawr thing. I see it and think of a compressed file, even if it does sound cool. :p

.simba/.simb/.roar - normal file
.rawr - compressed and executable file or just a compressed file of more .simba/.simb/.roar files.

I personally like .roar for normal script files but whatever works. :)

Yes and i suggest to use that format but have another one as optional why is that a bad idea ?

.txt is just text, thus being platform-independent

Even though, I don't like .txt as the extension.. It doesn't tell the human that that file is for to be opened in Simba

Actually its not, it actually denotes the characters used for new lines. So, its a poor idea as it *is* platform-dependant.

*sigh*

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Text_file
.txt is a filename extension for files consisting of text usually containing very little formatting (ex: no bolding or italics). The precise definition of the .txt format is not specified, but typically matches the format accepted by the system terminal or simple text editor. Files with the .txt extension can easily be read or opened by any program that reads text and, for that reason, are considered universal (or platform independent).
The ASCII character set is the most common format for English-language text files, and is generally assumed to be the default file format in many situations. For accented and other non-ASCII characters, it is necessary to choose a character encoding. In many systems, this is chosen on the basis of the default locale setting on the computer it is read on. Common character encodings include ISO 8859-1 for many European languages.
Because many encodings have only a limited repertoire of characters, they are often only usable to represent text in a limited subset of human languages. Unicode is an attempt to create a common standard for representing all known languages, and most known character sets are subsets of the very large Unicode character set. Although there are multiple character encodings available for Unicode, the most common is UTF-8, which has the advantage of being backwards-compatible with ASCII: that is, every ASCII text file is also a UTF-8 text file with identical meaning.

EDIT: Wait… Are you talking about Window's Notepad now?

Nava2

2010-03-18 12:42:08

I am mistaken. But, by doing that, depending how it's made, the newline char issue will still be apparent.

mixster

2010-03-18 12:56:53

.txt may not be platform dependent, but still heavily associated with Windows - pretty sure Mac doesn't use it and Linux definitely does not.

Ron

2010-03-18 13:04:35

Its kind of funny because it really doesn't matter. I have some scar files with names like: "high.five" and if I open them in scar, it will play correctly. I just cannot double click on them to open it in scar without doing an Open With.

Wizzup?

2010-03-18 13:08:44

Line endings aren't an issue. I think perhaps .txt would be *OK* because every noob would know our scripts are just text. When we use .roar or .simba they may not know how to open it. I don't think tom's suggestion is bad at all. :)

The problem then is file association as it's usually quite annoying for people when they can't double-click open something, not to mention it makes it a lot harder finding random files when you can't search for *.simba or the like :)

Smartzkid

2010-03-18 20:19:41

.txt would be very annoying as most people keep it associated with a text editor on windows. Thus they either give up the benefits of file association, or open all text files in simba. Lose-lose.

Side-note: .rar is supposed to be pronounced "rare".

.simba is good though, it certainly makes it easy to figure out what application it goes with :p. I don't like .roar too much, and .rawr (if people want it) could be those project scripts that SCAR supported and no one used. If you could do things like load PNG images and include other scripts from your .rawr project that would be pretty neat, and also wouldn't require people to run installers for multi-file scripts.
