If you compile it yourself, is it optimized for your system?

Hardly a difference.

There might be some differences with weird bugs popping up because of the compiler though, besides that there's no real difference.

I can't seem to get it to compile. I followed your instructions and I opened project1.lrs in Lazarus. I hit Run > Build All and it says that project1.lrs has been successfully built but I can't find the binary.

The directory I installed it to was ~Programming/simba and the binary didn't appear,

Try pressing F9, it should then run the file so you can see if it actually generated some useful output :p

I hit run and it said the program was executing without showing any output. No window and no debug output.

Should I get a more recent version of fpc?

2.4.x should be recent enough. Try setting the debugger in lazarus to GDB, just in case.
