Group Project: BareBones Script

I haven't finished prepping this, but at this point I would just like to know who would be interested in joining this project before I go any further.

First off by BareBones I don't mean as in prayer xp, I mean like barebones computer systems where you just add a few components. We are going to make a script that can be used as a base for many types of scripts, where new and old scripters alike can add to it in varying degrees to make their scripts.

As well as writing code, there will also be a lot of testing and organization to be done. We will be using the same revision control software for BareBones as the SRL Devs for SRL5, and probably also providing testing and feedback for SRL5. Since this isn't really a script by itself, it won't be on stats, but you will be able to pat yourself on the back based on how stable the scripts that use BareBones are. Members of the project won't have to deliver 1000 lines or anything, but I do hope that if anyone can't continue on for an extended period of time for whatever reason that their work is passed on.

If you are interested in the project, please post. If you have an area you would like to focus on, such as organization, manager, documentation, testing, tester liaison, coder for ___ , etc, please let me know.
If you are not sure if you are interested and need to know the answer to a question(s) first, please post and ask, as I am sure I forgot something.

Edit: If you would like to join please join the Simba testing group, install git, create a github.com account, and PM me on github or villavu with your github account name. Please make your github username the same as your SRL one (like mine is), or as close as possible. Then, if you would like to make a tutorial on how to do all that, please do so. Also, I set up #srl-barebones, just in case we need it.

If it gets too long, then some functions can be put into an include, but in theory it will be more of a script than an include. You know how any monster fighters just the user to add some colors and uptext for the target monster, well imagine something like that, except it's the scripter adding stuff to make it a fletcher, or smelter, or whatever.

so it is almost like a template?

Yup, unless the devs completely QQ it out of SRL5 :)

Sounds like MSI..

Similar to MSI and POMS in that it is a group effort, yes. However Brain was on the right track with template. BareBones is aimed at new scripters and scripters without much time, rather than at script users. This is about helping create more activity, and easing the sharp learning curve. I thought about asking MSI/POMS to add another project, but I don't want to detract from their current ones, plus they are both svn/scar based while this will probably be git/simba based.

So basically, this idea is going to be alot of functions like this ?

Function BareBonesBank(ItemC:Integer; Bank:String; DepositAllButton:Boolean):Boolean;
begin
if not loggedin then exit;
If openbank(bank) then
begin
if findColor(itemc in inventory then click) then
//etc etc
end;

//If BareBonesBank(6666, 'vwb', true) then

If its like a template im in. Also if reflection isn't accepted because its to easy, wouldn't a template that you just fill in the blanks also be to easy?

I'm in! :)

Wait is this like all in one script? :D

Boreas

2010-03-01 09:47:44

Camaro': something like that but broader will be a part of it
Myles: new scripters will be able to learn from the code that is doing some of the work for them
antti mies: no, in fact the script by itself wont do any skill, the idea is that people can go from template to fletcher, or template to smelter etc

How are you going to be organizing this? Are you going to make it event-driven? That's the only way I could see it happening, BareBones being a framework that detects events of interest to some given skill and then calling a user-defined function like:

while True
newTree := wc_PopFromTreeStack();

case newTree.ident of
wc_NormalTree, wc_OakTree, wc_MapleTree: continue;
end;

if action != wc_Cutting then
begin
wc_Cut(newTree);
currTree := newTree;
end;
else if newTree.ident > currTree.ident then
begin
wc_Cut(newTree);
currTree := newTree;
end;
end;

This is something to teach people to script. So I imagine it'll be as simple as possible.
