Why does everyone hate rappers?

Mr. Doctor

2010-02-27 00:29:00

I see majority of people saying that rap sucks. Why's this? The rap being developed now, sucks. (Except for a few good artists (Jay-z, Eminem etc.)) Most rap I listen to consists of years '90 to '00, which is when it was good. But why does everyone say, " Rap sucks, rock ftw".

Kinda bugs me.

YoHoJo

2010-02-27 00:33:42

Well a bunch of rap does suck, its true. There is good rap, and nice rap, and rap that's leet and gangsta and cool, just a VERY SMALL amount of it compared to the crappy rap, so overall, rap sucks :].
I have a few select good rap songs, and I agree that a lot of OLDER rap songs are SO MUCH better than the new shit.

It's all just opinion and taste really, all different kinds of people like different kinds of stuff, I don't think a certain majority of people like a certain type of music, it's all spread out.

i luffs yeww

2010-02-27 00:50:35

Common reasons: lyrics suck, it's degrading to specific people (blacks, women, etc.), it doesn't require much talent to be decent (I'm not saying that anyone can be a good/famous rapper, but all it is is poetry.. You don't even need a good voice), they often talk of "bad" things (drugs, sex, violence), and a few more but I have to go.

Frement

2010-02-27 00:56:09

If the beat sucks, i dont listen, if the lyrics suck, i dont care. Thats how i filter out the "bad" ones. Anyways i rarely even listen to rap.

YoHoJo

2010-02-27 01:26:46

Yeah I luffs yeww summed it up.
Yes, you cant just generalize all rap, but MOST rap is about what he said.
And the very few good ones go unnoticed :p
I'm into Kanye, Lupe Fiasco, U-N-I, N.E.R.D, and The Cool Kids they are all mostly good. Especially Lupe/Kanye.
Besides that Im all about this stuff:

80s-00s ftw.
Eazy-E, P.E., NWA, Ice-T, Dr. Dre, Snoop, Eminem, Tupac. them guys are the good rap artists. Throw out the others. Especially the 21st century rappers, except Lupe & Kanye

I definitely like some rap (first song off the top of my head is Anti-Matter by N.E.R.D., but the majority of it is just too general for me/most people who don't like rap. I listen to everything from acoustic to metal, and lyrics are probably the most important thing for me. And rap is basically all lyrics (beat plays a big role, but if it's just beat, it's not rap, in my opinion.. more like.. techno/all the other words for it, which I love <3), so it's hit and miss due to that.

I like the song Bed Rock by uhh.. I think the actual artist who gets credit for it is Lil' Wayne (although I don't recognize him at all in the song), but there are like six or seven other rappers in it.

Techno/a lot of people have been calling it dub step or something lately, but I pretty much generalize techno with a lot of other similar things (dub step, happy hardcore, trance, rave, etc. are all slightly different, I agree, but they're all based on beats, so please don't bash/debate that. It doesn't matter whatsoever.) is pretty great. :3 Evil Activities <3. And I like a lot of "trance" and "rave" stuff (still I just call it techno).

I heard someone here had a site with just music.. Widget or someone? I couldn't find it. Does anyone know where that was? Apparently it was great.

One thing I hate about rap is when they use music from other band's songs, like Daft Punk or Aerosmith. Some of the older rap is good though.

I'm just not a fan of how repetitive some of the stuff is. Two songs in a row that don't have a gunshot or a kaching is a rarity. A lot of disrespect towards women too. I saw a documentary that showed some aspiring young rappers that had some great material about modern problems, and then when the fat cats show up they start rapping about hoes and capping some N's with their glock.

What's wrong with samples? IMO, they're what make Eminem good…

Samples are fine IMO, Kanye West's 'Graduation' CD is all samples, and its amazing.
I should make a thread about GOOD rapper tomorrow :]. I'm interested in finding more besides the ~5? I know

Rap is fine. Not my thing really, but I come across good rap every now and then.. And yeah, older rap is better (atleast IMO), but you can say the same about rock and metal too.

People that say "rap(/metal/rock/techno etc.) is fucking gay only *insert genre here* is good" are just kids that should be ignored. Although if I had to choose a side between rap and metal "fans" I'd probably choose the skinny long-haired kids with worn out band t-shirts mostly because they're less lame than the sudanese/somalian immigrants around here that think they're from USA, or atleast act like it. I don't know whether to laugh or cry when I hear them speak klingon or whatever language they speak and frequently add some horribly pronounced english "black people slang" with a thick african accent in there, and the way they imitate stereotypical mannerisms from the tv etc., it's just unbelievably stupid.

You just described me perfectly :p

But, yea, if you want to call yourself a musician, or have your whole world revolve around music, you need a respect for all music. You don't need to like it, but you need to respect it and have a non bias opinion on it imo.

I used to host it on my home computer, but I'm not too keen to get a DMCA warning for my home address, buy me a VPS or something and I'll up it all again :p.

Also, to clarify, Dubstep is more or less Grime (British ghetto-rap minus the rapping), which can go from artists like Datsik to Borgore to Caspa to this Raspian guy. I forgot what I was originally trying to prove now but I think it was that Dubstep and related (Drum & Bass, Trip-hop, etc.) aren't really so much "rave" genres as what's generally considered "Techno", which is usually Trance (which I don't count as ravable to), Happy Hardcore and UK Hardcore, Gabber or Dutch Hardcore (which includes Evil Activities), or Eurodance and similar. There's also "House" (which can be anything), although it usually means Minimal Techno or Electro House or Tech House, and It all sounds the same to me and I can't stand any generic House anymore :(. Minimal gives Techno its stereotype of being repetitive (because Minimal songs are, well, repetitive as hell)

I must admit though, some rap has some nice instrumentals, and I kinda wish it would gather its own genre, because nearly all the rapping in modern rap is terrible.

In response to the topic title, "Why does everyone hate rappers?" I say because anything that hits mainstream is related to how awesome they are, how many bitches they own, how much weed they smoke, how much money they have (to waste on bitches and weed of course), and how awesome at rapping they are. Sometimes they talk about shoes as well.

Edit: Added more links. Also, if there's any genre you want more of, I could make a torrent for it

Ludacris is OK but most of his rap is about sex so its kinda like :/

WhiteShadow

I dislike a lot of rap music because it… SUCKS. It's always about money falling from the sky, clubs, drug, sex, and etc.. and it just gets really repetitive over time. Don't get me wrong I love arrogant/narcissistic music but rap is usual so literal so it's so stupid to time. It's not like artistically done it sounds rough and ugly.. dunno. AND it doesn't help that most rap is what's on the Hot 100 charts and 102.7 and anything that gets extremely mainstream loses it's cool factor over time.

I like Lupe Fiasco, use to like Kanye. A few songs some other artists… but dislike them overall.

I listen to a lot of Korean Rap though. :D

i hate rap because it requires almost no skill.

you dont need a good voice to sing, hell, they dont even sing! its just talking and ryming, and even then every song is practicly about the same thing

the beats, any one can make them with a computer + beat maker.

it seems like every good rap song has a remix. what the hell is the point? if i wanted to listen to the song, i would listen to it. not to your crappy song with the others good song, just to make you look better

where as rock:
the singer must have a good voice. if he doesnt, he will never make it, at all

the music (guitar, bass, drums etc) has to be all perfectly syncronized, and it needs HOURS and HOURS of practice, just to get a part of a song just right. not to mention the practice and skill just to be as good as they are

if there is a remix, that artist is automatically shot down, and probobly lost all respect :)

Lil' Wayne and other various "New Age" rap artists really anger me do to the "Fake-ness". Old school rap(80's - 00) was just so mush more raw.

I listen to music for the lyrics and the emotion. Which is probably why I dislike most metal as well. I LOVE hardcore though. That's what I live for. You will never find music with more emotion and meaning.

Why are you not doing this then if it's so easy, considering the millions rappers make for it..? I don't see any reason not to buy a mic and download a "beat maker" and quickly write a few songs, record them and make a shitload of money.. Saying all rap is just shit that requires no skill or practice is like saying Nickelback (or some other todays rock band with talentless mongoloid members and generic soul-less music) stands for all rock. I'm not a fan of rap but I know 100% surely not everyone can do it, or atleast be successful or good at it.

Almost all rock singers sound the same these days, and the songs aren't really too complicated, and you don't need any particular talent to be an artist, if you're a decent singer it's enough, the rest can be done with a computer, and if you can play an instrument decently you'll do fine.. These days the most important factor seems to be that you have a pretty face.

you should think about a career in singing.

I like rap that's not about banging hoe's. I like Drapht, Eminem (although he has so not so good stuff), Big Willy (Will Smith :p), and Fortminor are all good. There's a bunch of others, but those are some examples.
