Story about my memory stick

Ok so here it goes

Yesterday I had a double english and we had oral presentations and this one kid brang in his laptop and because there was a laptop set up at the front of the class for powerpoints, I offered him my memory stick so he could copy it onto that and then view it off the memory stick rather then wasting time setting up his laptop then putting it away then putting the original one up.

So after the first english period he copied the powerpoint onto it and did his presentation on the other english period. This sounds pretty normal right?

Well, anyway, after I had english I had I.T, and I have to use my USB for that class. So I plug it in and the anti-virus pops up saying there was a virus in D:/drivers/lots_of_random_letters_and_numbers and I thought that the anti-virus was reporting something fake. So I clicked skip and when I went to open my memory stick, it gave an error saying access denied or something. So I unplugged it and plugged it in and this time I clicked delete on the anti-virus, managed to backup my work and reformat the memory stick to get rid of the virus.

Well, after all that it worked, I copied my work back and yeah. I didnt tell the kid anything but I assume that it wasn't his fault, and that he had a virus on his laptop that just copied it to my usb's driver files so any pc i plugged it into gets the virus and it spreads.

Just thought il'd share that story with you guys

Cool. When you get back to computer class, go around and stick it in every computer.

I am in computer class now, and the virus has been removed, the anti-virus blocked it from being copied onto the computer anyway it just gave me a choice whether to delete it off my memory stick or to skip it

Ooh. I've done that. [Custom made virus (by me), on every computer in the school.]

hahahhahahaaa… win … complete win…

Ok, so at my high school, one of the computers got a virus, and that computer gave it to every thumb drive plugged into it, each of those thumb drives gave it to every computer they were plugged into, and so on and so forth… it was hilarious.
The fail Tech Admin, ended up getting it on his server, and it spread to 3 school districts. That was even more hilarious. The only server that didn't get the virus was the one in the IT room. We just had better protection, protocols, and ran our own server section.

About a year a so ago it got really bad, until most people switched to writing roguewares. A lot of techs now use sticks with a physically write switch, or protect a dummy autorun.inf file, or use an SD card with switch in a reader, for this reason. Hak5.org has some videos on switchblade, making it really easy for people to dump whatever payload they want. It's good to disable autorun on windows boxes you own, but even then you still have to worry about stuff like virut that infects .exes that get deliberately run.

I have to use windows for school because of microsoft office (Excel for I.T.A and Word + Powerpoint for English and other subjects, also inb4 openoffice it doesn't have the features I need, takes longer to use and it harder to use. When I made a spreadsheet using openoffice it fucked up when I opened it in powerpoint) + all the computers at school have Windows XP + microsoft office. It wouldn't make any difference if I was using ubuntu or windows the virus would still be on my memory stick, and as a matter of fact if I used ubuntu (or any other linux os) I wouldn't have known the virus was there.

Anyway I just found out today that the virus was actually on the school laptop, not my friends laptop because one of my close friends was using the laptop for his oral presentation and then I told him about what happened and he was concerned that the virus could of spread to his memory stick, so we went to the study room, plugged it in and the anti-virus went off and deleted it.

And that's not all, almost half our class (like around 10 people) used their own USB for their powerpoint, but I am not reporting the virus to the LAN administrator, it's his fault for being an idiot and not installing an anti-virus onto the computer in the first place. If anything I will tell him that I got a virus from a school laptop I had to use for an oral presentation and how many students in my class used their own USB and got the virus.

Agreed, very childish to intentionally screw with your own effing school.

You do know that most of the mail servers run Linux, and that quite some of them scan mails for virusses, don't you? There are plenty of virus detectors for Linux, they just don't need them themselves. So you would have known the virus was there if you wanted to. apt-get install clamav

Yes, I know that most mail servers run linux, but whats this thread got to do with mailservers and/or linux? nothing - Also I don't think that clamav will automatically scan my usb when I plug it in so that wont be much use to me, because as I said I only ever found out that this trojan/virus was on my USB because the AV picked it up when I went to open it

Also, I am starting to think I should report the problem to the LAN administrator

You think it won't, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't or can't.

Yes, you should report. Not really for this particular virus, but for the general fact that they are vulnerable to flash drive spread malware (and others for that matter), as something using a similar technique but with a more crippling payload could hit in the future.
