Lets Play Some Tetris

caused

This is my latest Project. Completed in delphi and may become open source :)..

It's a version of tetris, called B-Tris.

Game Modes

Unlike in the classical Tetris I included various challenging gamemodes besides the Classical mode.

Classic - Just the usual tetris, like you're used to, speeds up a little faster than the gameboy-tetris to make it more challenging

Adventure - Clear all white blocks as fast as possible. There are 20 different levels, if you manage to solve them all, you can add an entry to the highscore.. Oh and if you can do it, please post your time here, my best is 32 minutes.

Survival - This Gamemode was designed for the hardcore tetris players. It's extremely challenging, since not only the tetris blocks start to speed up, but there are also spawning lines from the bottom every x seconds.

Network - Networking mode is currently only experimental available. But i just beta-tested it and it works great, even over the internet!. The server needs to open port 110. The Game is a VS mode similar to the GameBoy VS Mode, when you connect 2 gameboys (If some of you ever did that ;) )

Controls

Arrow Up - Rotate block
Arrow left right - Move block left or right
Arrow Down - Speed up block
Space - Drop block

Conclusion

I do really hope you enjoy my game, and' be glad about any feedback comments and bug-reports ! What I'm wanting to change for the final version is basicly the input and one or two bugs that are still there. And I'm also open for suggestions : D.

Comments and Critiques welcome ! :)

likes, just thinks the controls are too sensitive. Sometimes you press left or right and it will move two, when it ought to have only been one.

I agree with dan, it's pretty fun and addicting, I couldn't stop playing till I lost, only managed to get 4100 somehow lol.

but while I was playing I was thinking it was a little too sensitive also, maybe make it a little less sensitive, and to me the way it moved down, it didn't move too much, but it looked like it moved down fast. Not how long it takes to go from the top to bottom in total, but just how quickly it moves when dropping a single row if that makes any sense.

I'm glad you liked it.

I personally don't think that the controls are too sensitive, but I'll completely redo those anyways… Because I'm currently using GetAsyncKeystate, which some stupid AV programmes detect as malware or even Virus.

Anyways thanks alot for testing : D.. I wonder if anyone is able to solve the whole adventure mode XD

after level 2 on adventure mode (after dying once) it did this weird thing where it looked like it accidentally put pieces from the first time (could be wrong) on the screen. Then once i got rid of the white piece left it went on to the next level as normal.

I just cant play the adventure because it keeps moving two when i want 1 (and only pressed for 1) and screws me up.

I tried testing the new one yesterday but Norton insight deleted it on me, so I got rid of Norton yesterday night. I'll try to test your newer tetris today and tell you what I think :)

oh, and making me "install" it is annoying. A simple rar/zip file would be nice.

You can open the .exe with winrar and unzip it manually. Enable DAS (in options) if you have a problem with the controls.

New Version approaching soon ;)….

it seems like the time it takes to get to the bottom without hitting down is longer, if it is, and if you did that cause of me, it wasn't exactly what I meant. I can't tell but it seems like it takes longer, but what I meant was for it to take the same time to reach the bottom, but the speed that it drops one line at seemed to fast, it seemed like it should drop at a slower speed, but make it to the bottom at the same time, so basically drop at a slower speed, but make the drops closer together, to make it reach the bottom at the same time.

You can setup the softdrop speed (Options, Advanced).

Thanks for the comment :]

i still cant beat your silly adventure mode! You have spurts where ill get the same piece literally 6 times in a row.

haha : D .. well thats the thing with randomization :]… Some tetris versions use systems which prevent that. But mine doesn't and i don't plan on using one for future versions ;).

I did only finish it twice myself, so don't worry ;)

the thing is randomizations if you're using the built in ones aren't usually very random!

I do believe that they are quite random ._.'.

I'm using Randomize(initialize) and Random(generate).

Dan Cardin

2010-02-24 15:28:10

nope. Not random, when you get the same piece 6 times in a row, then get a different piece another 6 times in a row, then the next piece 4 times in a row, and not get a straight piece for literally 40 blocks, it is very unlikely that its truths! Anyways, if you're playing back a playthrough then you cant start a new game while its still playing…

caused

2010-02-24 16:26:11

Well, it is random.. You just had weird coincidences. The only solution to that would be to not let it generate the piece you just had.

Oh, and you can stop the playback of replays. I'm currently working on the next version :].. I'm glad to have some tetris experts (players) to help me improving my game. Well I gotta fix the SRS now and some bugs :]…

You can stop the replays, but i was trying to do so while it was still playing. So it might be nifty to allow new games to just stop it and close the play window. A play bar thing would be nice too, so one doesn't have to wait for it to get to the part you want to see (since it doesn't record each game individually).

If you were to add a limiter to the pieces, i would only force it to not be that piece if it had been 3 times in a row. I was just saying it was a very very odd coincidence, so you might want to make sure it was really random. Maybe a test thing would be to record how many of each are spawned. Then probability says they should be fairly even.

And I wonder if you are giving more points for double's triples and tetrises. I dont really play the regular game since i want to be adventure so i dont pay attention to score, but it would be a very nice addition if it popped up "TETRIS!" on the screen when you get one, like in some other games.

Also most tetris games have the ability to select which level and number of scrambled blocks you get to start on. (like 9-5 being level 9 with 10 lines of scrambled blocks from the bottom)

Sounds would be a good addition aswell

Hey Dan Cardin.

First of all, thanks alot for your great suggestions !.

I'm really not sure about the randomizer. I may add one of the "official" systems to generate tetris pieces, which doesn't allow multiple pieces, but than again, I do like it if i get the same piece three times in a row, it should stay a seldom coincicence though.

I'm already having a points system, It's: 1 Line - 100 pt, 2 lines, 200pt, 3 lines- 400pt, 4 lines - 800 pt.

I do also like your suggestions about the starting condition. Though that would generate the problem, that I would need an own highscore for any of those conditions.

I do already have sounds btw ;].. Once I got rid of all the bugs and SRS fixed, I'll add them. I'm also wanting to add some fancy graphics :].

When you get a tetris, what about having a nice 'TETRIS!' logo in fancy colors pop up? :)

Dan Cardin

2010-02-25 14:02:27

The high score wouldnt be a problem. There comes a point in tetris where you can't continue because it becomes too fast. All starting on level 9 does is puts you on level 9 where you would have been for levels 1-9, so it just allows you to have a higher score in the end. As for number of lines, you could just add the level they started on to the single high score and allow for a filter of sorting by them.

EDIT: omg! im surprisez i didnt notice this before! you're missing the triangle piece!
