Microsoft has said that it and the public will both suffer if Word goes off the market..

Bill gates has enough money anyway. What would you do with 48 Billion? Word is over priced anyway. I agree with Wizzup?, OpenOffice is better.

Bill Gates doesn't have 48 billion, you think all the money under his name is liquid? No, most of it is in Microsoft and company shares.

Besides, you have any idea how much he donates? I may not agree with how Microsoft is, but that doesn't mean Bill Gates is some big asshole. Infact he doesn't even work full time at Microsoft anymore, but works full time at Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Better than Office 07 by far (except powerpoint; the new style works very well for it), but it's a bit slow and bloated compared to 03 IMO.

By balls I thought you meant human testi. Thanks :D.

But for a free word document, OpenOffice is pretty decent.

wat, I was sure it was Java based…I remember JRE being a dependency on it when I installed into someone's Whinedoze box.

OO.o was one of the first programs I installed on my sisters newly formatted Windows 7 install. Being one of the first, I had no Java installed. It did not require Java what-so-ever before the installation, during the installation and during application launch.

If I recall correctly certain plugins require java. But OpenOffice 3 is mainly C++.

Microsoft can no longer sell Word in America as of somewhere around 10 January 2010, but they already have a new version ready (I believe it was a minor feature - support for some kind of xml). It's a bit ironic though, because the company who sued them makes some kind of plugin for Word. So if Word would be taken of the market, they wont be able to sell their product either.

WASHINGTON – A federal appeals court on Tuesday upheld a $290 million judgment against Microsoft Corp. and issued an injunction that will prevent the sale of its popular Word software.

I think that means the owners of the plugin got $290 million…which is a LOT more than they could ever hope to make selling a word processing plugin.
